a meme from a friend that i have made a secret canon to my emmrich ; one of his first servants of bone was a skeleton who he had named fanny , and she helped him repair parts of the necropolis ; she was good at that . and yes , he sometimes thinks of fanny dearly , says shit like ' i do miss fanny.' 'fanny had no action that day ; no holes in the necropolis were filled.' do of that what you will .

he postured a lot when it came to the fighting abilities of each of their little motley crew , they all seemed so adept in their own tactics ; and some were more flashy than others which seemed to pose a threat when it came to the strategy of fighting elven gods ; those with such pragmatism .
𝐔𝐍𝐏𝐑𝐎𝐌𝐏𝐓𝐄𝐃 @mizpaholic : as far as me goes, i just like to blow things up.
( the shock on emmrich's face was so blatant that one could not mistake the little twinge of fear in his eyes ) ❝ i ----- i would hope you would explode what ever it is that you like to explode far away from me and manfred , thank you . ❞ ( magic was and always would be dangerous ; one could chuck up a spirit or two in the mere process of casting thaumaturgy ; but there was a careful balance as to not throw up a demon , explosives , however ----- )
❝ may i ask , how do you go about doing this arson ? do you use certain materials , is it magic ? ❞ ( he very much hopes theres magic , so at least he can warp the veil to a certain degree and ----- no . he should not help with the blowing of the things up ; as they say . )

the death mage knew , he knew what he did was unconventional outside of nevarra , which is why he was used to such judgements , such weird accusations , he was used to defending his way of life ; sometimes people stepped over the bounds ; would not et him educate them . but rook did not , though his words hit sorely , he did not hold a resentment for his sentiment ; he was acquainted with such ; after all , he could say the same things about any blood magic , never understand its practice , that would hurt a maleficar ----- no , that wouldn't be the same .
𝐔𝐍𝐏𝐑𝐎𝐌𝐏𝐓𝐄𝐃 @minwrathus : " emmrich. i'm sorry if you thought me rude earlier, with manfred. they're not what i expected, or what i'm used to seeing, but i shouldn't have been so dismissive of him. "
❝ there is nothing to be ashamed of ; we all have chances to grow , to learn , to experience . necromancy is not something those out of the necropolis are used to seeing so up close and in detail ; so you are fine to be so dismissive at first . ❞ ( and manfred had already forgotten the incident ; he was too interested in the shiny candelabra he had just acquired for his room . ) ❝ you are free to ask questions at any time ; we can learn a lot from each other here ; we all come from such different walks of life . ❞

they had no tangible healer in this place ; it was always just a matter of , ' do not get so hurt that you cannot look after yourself. ' a sentiment that none of them truly followed , due to their continued want to be the one who sacrifices it all ; he had noticed that with most the group , they valued their life ; but was very careless with it .
thats why , most the time , it was him who tended to the wounds ; the infirmary was right next door after all ; and his knowledge of the anatomy of most the party , not the griffon , meant he would find himself , yet again , tending to the scrapes and cuts on rae .
𝐈𝐓’𝐒 𝐀𝐋𝐋 𝐀𝐁𝐎𝐔𝐓 𝐓𝐇𝐄 𝐘𝐄𝐀𝐑𝐍𝐈𝐍𝐆 @veilblade : ❝ when your eyes are on me, i feel like something worth seeing. ❞
( he continued to press a cloth to an open wound to merely stop the minor bleeding before cleaning it ; but he looked over from her cheek to her eyes . ) ❝ i believe we all see you , we see you and follow you . we are not blind to who you are . ❞ ( though he can admit , they do not voice that sentiment , barely , enough . ) ❝ you are kind , you are strong ; you are admirable . that is worth a lot more than whether you are first talon first warden , a mourn watcher , a veil jumper or a lord of fortune ; you are you , and that is enough . ❞ ( he released the cloth , and took out a new one covered with the elfroot blend that davrin and bellara donated . )
❝ now , this might sting ----- ❞

the necropolis held such a grand demeanour today , neither angry and changing its shape through the rage of the undead , nor quiet , a solace that was almost too eerie for a mourn watcher . its head held high ; held firm in the middle ground ; a perfect day . almost like weather .
𝐈𝐓’𝐒 𝐀𝐋𝐋 𝐀𝐁𝐎𝐔𝐓 𝐓𝐇𝐄 𝐘𝐄𝐀𝐑𝐍𝐈𝐍𝐆 @circlefled : ❝ so, what would you be? if you had to power to change all the things making you unhappy, what would your life look like? ❞
he was tending to that of the gardens , newly re-discovered , newly reorientated , keeping the flowers bright on the gravesides , keeping the graves clean of any age . the question hit him off guard , mid flow . he was accustomed to hearing such deep questions when it came to the pursuit of knowledge from a student , but never a question so intimate . he would not like to admit the truth ; no admit that he would lie to the face of another . so he held that firm , weathered , middle ground .
❝ in truth ; it would the peace and quiet of this place , i would unleash it upon the world , the wars have gone on for too long ; i would be would like to be , that is , in that world , with no fear . ❞ ( an answer cut from what seemed to be some acceptance speech ; hidden truth so blatant at the end . ) ❝ i think i would like such a glorious life like that , i feel that most would agree in that sentiment as well . ❞

in the lighthouse , they were used to getting the odd question from the others as they went about daily life in a never dark but always mysterious fade ; the questions made a great deal of difference in their relationships for the most part , but some were just odd , and for education only . much like this one .
𝐔𝐍𝐏𝐑𝐎𝐌𝐏𝐓𝐄𝐃 @omniterror : you do swim, do you not? / ruzica mercar, asking silly questions bc she can
❝ i will agree ; it doesn't seem like the necropolis would have such large bodies of water so it is understandable to be a little confused on if that is a possibility , but i assure you , there are some lakes in there , some pools ; some even for recreation and not just aesthetic . swimming is such a great exercise , i try to get in a few laps when i can . so to answer your question , yes . yes i do ----- swim . ❞
though there is a part of him that realises how bizarre it seems , that when faced with water ; they do not approach as a caution in their journeys . he responded with the same sentiment ; a curiosity that he could not hold back .
❝ do you swim ? ❞

❝ Professooooooohohohoooooooorrrr . . . He did it again. ❞ Soggy Kiki, wet again. Sad again. Kidneyless again.
❝ oh you poor thing , youre sopping wet . take this blanket , manfred , get us some tea immediately . ❞ ( manfred scurries to the kitchens with the most excited of hisses ; while he tucks her in a wooly embrace ; scorning rook and his actions . )

he was lost in conversation of home ; something he tended to do a lot with rook around ; their shared connection of the necropolis . he admitted he was homesick so many times ; it began to be one of his catch phrases . they could share their home with each other ; talk about it enough to feel in the confides of the necropolis once again ; with their duty , followed family .
❝ ----- finding the memorial gardens was one thing ; but i still have yet to find the archway ; i used to study there as an apprentice , the architecture was so peaceful ----- i must go look for it when this is all over . ❞
𝐔𝐍𝐏𝐑𝐎𝐌𝐏𝐓𝐄𝐃 @ymirgel : Would you like the company, professor?
he was taken slightly off guard ; he had not even asked for the help and here she was , yet again , asking to help . or just be there while he went on that discovery . always endearing ; why did she show such interest in an old philosopher such as himself ? a moment of silence ensued .
❝ i would appreciate your company ; enjoy it . ❞ ( cherish it ) ❝ i could show you the exact spot that manfred and i first met . ❞

" Can your knee predict the weather ? "
( he looks so disappointed in the the nurse ) ❝ dear kiki , i am not that old , i may have some years on you and the others but ----- ❞ ( who is he kidding here , he knew he was getting there in age , he was just in denial of how far along he truly was . ) ❝ only one of them , yes , i can tell when its going to get cold ; or that its going to rain , it gets stiff ; an old injury . ❞ ( dont tell her about his hips joints , and how stiff they get when he's been sat too long , or how his fingers and wrists tingle from time to time for over use in spell casting . )

he refolded the blanket in his hands , and covered them away from her sight with it . holding it like a manservant , manfred at his side itching to take it away and put it back to where it belongs . ( or in his pack . )
❝ i'm going to side step that little compliment . ❞
he looked over at the manservant , still mesmerised by the blanket and not the task he had volunteered for . he must have enjoyed its colour or material . naïve to the situation .
❝ you cannot have manfred's hands , they are important to me and my work as well , and those were a gift , a dear gift to the myself and the mourn watch , i cannot let property of the necropolis leave my sight . ❞ ( he spoke almost like a parent scolding their child , attempting to explain why they were in trouble . )
❝ lord mercar must have a similar reason as to why he cannot part with his hands ; just like us all . how would you feel if someone wanted your hands ? the pain involved and the after care would be excruciating , and long term , we cannot afford to give our bodies to our comrades ------ ❞ ( his face froze . thank the maker rook wasn't here , he would have jumped on that statement like a nug in heat .)
Mourning the blanket obviously meant for her, beak tipped lower, mimicking a disappointed look.
❝ But your hands are so pretty. ❞ ( Maybe even prettier than Sal's, if he only gave her ONE CHANCE ) . Eventually yielding to his reasoning — she can understand a likely-minded individual like the professor ; Hands are important for people who are working with the dead. Howeveeeer . . .
❝ --Glorious idea, Manfred. You would not actively need your hand. Can he spare his hand, pleaaaase ? I will on my utmost best behavior ( for the next days, at least ) . ❞

as much as the mortalitasi had the suave confidence of those in the learned mourn watch , there was a slight nervousness that hit his demeanour . he broke .
❝ evasive ? ----- i ----- i merely do not let my ego grow too large , i am confident in my abilities , but i respect myself enough to not hamper the furthering of my knowledge with the heightening of my head . ❞ ( though the inquisitor was not wrong at all ; he tried his best to hide the fact , he didn't like compliments ; they made him feel as though his work had no merit , if it was the betterment of his beloved watch . )
( he was taken aback by such the sentiment , the idea of guilt when all of this was so out of control . ) ❝ do not think of it like that , my lady , you have no worries , i can return once we have dealt with the situation , i was in need of a little respite from the necropolis , and if it is to help and aid those who need my knowledge , i call this a learning experience as well as a holiday . ❞ ( there was a smile on his face that remained , sincere and happy ; he truly believed they would succeed . ) ❝ you have duties too , do not let your past with the dread wolf get in the way of that ; no one person can have that much agency on a situation like this ; you are not to blame . ❞
She listens intently to his humility, head tilted in open acceptance. If Rook is to be believed, this man is one of the most learned scholars of the fade in all of Thedas, a sharp mind bolstered by raw talent. Everyone in the Lighthouse, in fact, seems to think highly of him ( save Taash, who had yet to grace the Inquisitor with more than a grunt. )
“Are you always evasive with compliments, Professor?” A hint of a light - hearted ribbing, bare - bones as it is. There is so pathetically little to be light - hearted about these days. “I should think an academic of your stature warrants the designation.” Paltry as it is ; Evelyn herself had never attended any sort of formal schooling. Reading, writing, and whatever sums suited Chantry life. Though history had always intrigued her.
“I can't help but feel my failure in stopping Solas has stolen you from your work.”

he leaned in to listen a tad , the curiosity in him soon to be sated , knowledge of the young taxidermist and her doings seemed interesting . if not morbid , but that was a similarity they shared . for that reason , he was sincere .
❝ an autopsy ? interring the dead is one of the many duties of the mourn watch ; though our autopsies are more for the inspection and cleaning of the dead . to make them safe to inter . likewise , we keep jars aside for those who choose to be interred with their organs , it is a practice that many have decided to take that has been with us for generations in nevarra ----- but it is usually just those that have distinct meaning ; brain , heart and the like . ❞
he paused on his ramblings ; a focus back on the nurse and her collection .
❝ you would need the dead's permission to take parts of their body before interring ; it is an expected consent when being given to the necropolis that their bones by animated at some point ; and is a belief that everyone shares . perhaps your collection would be more sustainable if you found those consenting to your practice . there are mortuaries across the empire who accept those that believe their body could be of use to science ; they might be inclined to give to your collection if it is for anatomical research . ❞
@mournmento 𝚌𝚘𝚗𝚝𝚒𝚗𝚞𝚎𝚍 𝚏𝚛𝚘𝚖 ››› [ 𝚑𝚎𝚛𝚎 ]
The taxidermist shared the stance for one moment before neatly folding both hands behind her back. A look-over is what she gave the poor fella on his table. Angling & tilting her head to give a vague display of honest interest in his craft, even if it was truly only primal impatience ; similar to a vulture only waiting for the predator to be done with its business.
❝ Hm, hm, I see. Weeell, Professor Volkarin, I naturally would have conducted an autopsy. See which organs were still in proper condition for preserving the remains. We can still learn a lot from a person's life beyond corpse-whispering. Not saying I am an art-collector — more of an anatomy-collector. But who draws the line where ? ❞ With renewed determination, Kiki attempted a puppy-eyed look ( awfully hard to tell, behind charcoal glasses ) .
❝ Maybe I can keep only the innards ? Their skeleton won't notice the weight-loss, I promise. ❞

the forgotten . you die alone. maybe they find you right away, maybe it takes weeks. it doesn't matter because no one will remember a few years down the road. if people come to your funeral, it is not a memory they engrave into their mind. you leave no mark in the world, no legacy at all. your grave grows moss and collects dust, cracking under nothingness. soon, someone will think of you for the last time.

he was mid unfolding a blanket for the shivering mess of a little lady stood before him , ready to comfort , then stopped mid wrap to remove his hands quickly from the avian nurse .
( he held his hands close to his chest and took a step back . ) ❝ ----- but these are very important to me , and my work ! you cannot have my hands . ❞ ( boy ; when he catches rook he will be giving that little rake a stern talking to . ) ❝ what made you think i'd give you mine ? i ----- i cannot ------ will not . ❞
there is a hiss at the staircase , a hiss of voluntary excitement .
❝ no manfred , you are not giving young kirily one of your hands . ❞
@mournmento 𝚌𝚘𝚗𝚝𝚒𝚗𝚞𝚎𝚍 𝚏𝚛𝚘𝚖 ››› [ 𝚑𝚎𝚛𝚎 ]
Oh pooooor Kiki. Poor innocent Kiki. Just wants a body part. Can't deny her that small thing, right ? Sniffling so theatrically,
❝ I want one hand, nothing more. Can I have yours ? Pretty please ? Only the left ; or right. Whatever you prefer. ❞ Open palms, puppy-dog eyes. Put. Your. Hand. In. Her. Palms. Emmrich. She is shivering. Help her.

Drenched in water, sad little Kiki scuttles to Emmrich's place.
❝ Professor ? Rook promised me his hand but now chickens out. This is quite unfair & I demand one hand, still. ❞
❝ oh you are soaked through , poor thing ----- dear kirrily , what do you need assistance with , i can offer the support . ❞ ( he truly took it as needing a hand ----- needing help . )
