I kind of want to make a post about Michael and Jentry's dynamic in the show to finish of the thread of my posts talking about the dynamics between Jentry + Kit, and Michael + Kit respectively but it's hard to know what to say because the show doesn't really give us a satisfying conclusion to Michael's personal arc.
Obviously he's dating Jentry at the end and that's cute but the show seems to just forget that Michael was supposed to confront his parents about his powers, and because wanting to please his parents and meet their expectations is so much of Michael's story, it doesn't feel like we got to resolve anything there.
I really wanted to see Michael get mad or at least frustrated with his parents- the way Jentry does with Gugu.
Especially because it does feel like his parents hiding whatever knowledge they have about his powers from him is a mirror of Jentry's relationship with Gugu (and to some extent her mom). We never get to hear whether Michael's parents believe their hiding the info for his own good or simply for the sake of keeping up an appearance to Michael about a fake normality of their lives.
It feels like that would be such an interesting story to see side by side with Jentry's, especially because even though both Jentry and Michael are racialized people in an American context, it's implied that Michael is a first generation American unlike Jentry. I assume his parents immigrated together from Nigeria (and now I'm wondering if the keepsakes that he mentions being lost in the fire might be related to his powers).
I think there's a really interesting contrast we could have in the story about the lies Flora tells Jentry as a way to protect Jentry (but really mostly to protect Jentry's perception of Flora and her parents) and the secrets kept by Michael's parents which could be looked at as an attempt to help Michael assimilate more fully into American culture in the way that sometimes immigrant parents will not teach children their mother tongue in order to encourage them to speak the common language of their new home.

Given the sheer number of people we see in Kit’s Cheng induced guilt hallucination, probably? Although the first person we see him drain is straight up a child who doesn’t do anything but cry and he’s fine with lifting a cannon, he does get tackled by the people from his past and he’s not that good at dodging, even out of the skins (Michael grabs him once). However, we also know he’s capable of only taking a little lifeforce, enough to make someone lightheaded, unfocused, et cetera. So, yeah??? Take that as you will I guess
one thing i do think is funny (read: tragic) is that kit had apparently been in this cycle of like. meeting a new person, forming a mutual connection, revealing his nature, getting rejected, and then killing them for qi/whatever Mr. Cheng wanted for like. centuries (source, episode 6)
of course Mr. Cheng thought he was gonna crack once Jentry wasn't into him anymore
when he said he'd never hurt her he really meant it.
also some food for thought, could kit draining people after revealing his true nature be considered self defense? the risk of getting "outed" as a monster could be dangerous for him, and you'd think that at least a few people have tried to kill him before. his sick hand to hand combat skills (blocking a knife in the alamo ep was insane) had to come from somewhere
#I mean he clearly regrets doing it but I like to imagine every time he makes a new skin he’s like. Surely. Surely this time my method#of getting people to love me under a false identity while eating their qi will work out long term.

#jentry chau vs the underworld#jcvtu#Okay actually these things are so fun to make#Jentry Chau#jentry chau kit#Jentry Chau Mr. Cheng#To be clear the concerning dynamic is when my love for you is the only real part of my current identity#and thus I refuse to let you go because otherwise who am I and you’re mad at me because I represent a part of your life that hurt you.#and on account of me not letting you go. and starting a bunch of shit on accident. and then I get myself killed about it

Ok I LOVED Jentry Chau vs The Underworld! It was SOOOOOO good. I love seeing a good action show with a unique animation style. Seriously, give it a chance if you like fun. The intro sequence is the best I’ve seen in a WHILE.
Had to draw a bit of fan art for the show! I originally tried drawing an actual cool background but that’s not something I’m good at so I went with this abstract background. I wanted her to sort of be stepping out of a frame.
I want to work on a project like Jentry Chau one day, something where you can see all the love that was poured into it.

Jentry Chau is a fun character because she lives with ghosts and a demon, hauled her great aunts corpse home from the woods, intentionally fucks around with shēn pearls that burrow into a person’s body like ticks, saw a demon’s armoire full of flesh bodysuits and called it a ‘skinterest board’, grows a third eye when she locks in, intentionally went to the psychological torture body horror underworld, fused with a venom symbiote with veneers, and has fully committed moguai murder. But she was too squeamish to do the frog dissection in class
