As a woman director, I’ve had my own battleground. In the big picture, I may look like I’ve held my own, but I haven’t. The scars are deep. And the problems aren’t over, as everyone here knows. The Film Industry is a disaster on gender and diversity and First Nations issues. I have spent many years being told NEVER to mention it — threatened that it was ’a sure fire way never to get hired’. Recently I was talking to my agents about my ambitions after finishing directing Sherlock. And they said ‘Yes, you have done Sherlock. yeah, the other Sherlock directors have all been offered pilots and features off the back of it. But remember, you are a woman”. It kind of took my breath away, to hear it stated so plainly. It wasn’t aggressive. It was so painfully casual, they probably wouldn’t even remember saying it. That’s what shocked me. They simply meant, “We’re just going to have to work that much harder, but also be realistic about your expectations.’

the other day i saw a tweet by some man that was like “so what if men just started remaking all the iconic female comedies with all male casts?” and legit my first thought was “uh, yeah, sure, go ahead”
and then i thought a little harder and like, there are a few, but – you couldn’t realistically do that? because here’s the thing: historically, comedies with majority-female casts have been about characters in specifically gendered situations, or have only worked plot-wise because of gender roles. like – 9 to 5. the first wives club. clueless. legally blonde. mean girls. bridesmaids. like, sure, you COULD make all-male versions of those, but they’re going to bear almost zero resemblance to the original story, because those stories are specifically GENDERED stories.
whereas the reason why you can make a movie like ghostbusters with an all female cast is because the conceit is universal, since there was no reason to justify them being all men in the first place. male stories are universal. female stories are “about women.”
so, like, men: if you want to steal all the iconic female comedies and remake them, have at it! good luck with that! you’re not going to get very far.

“Though Sevigny opted not to label the behavior sexual harassment, we’d totally identify the behavior as such. She mused, ‘I would consider it Hollywood.’ “
.Maybe it’s time we not only started to call it what it is, but understand it as what it is…

John Boyega Joins Kathryn Bigelow’s Detroit Crime Drama
Details of the project are unknown for now but the story is set against the backdrop of Detroit’s devastating riots that took place over five summer days in 1967, with the film seeking to explore the systemic racism in the city. The roll call is described as an ensemble piece.
A summer shoot in Detroit and Boston is being planned. Bigelow is producing with Boal, Annapurna’s Megan Ellison and Matthew Budman, and Colin Wilson. Greg Shapiro will executive produce.
No studio is attached as distributor but Bigelow, Ellison and company are eyeing a 2017 release, timed to the 50th anniversary of the riots.

Women are not only discouraged from creating their own content, but if that content is not commercially successful the first time they are prevented from trying again.

Actors of color swept every musical performance category at the Tonys
For the first time in Tonys history, all four of those categories — lead actor, lead actress, featured actor and featured actress — featured winners of color. Those winners, respectively: Leslie Odom Jr. of Hamilton, Cynthia Erivo of The Color Purple, Daveed Diggs of Hamilton and Renée Elise Goldsberry of Hamilton. The only time the Tonys got close to this record previously was in 1982.

This is a sad state of affairs yet not surprising. It is worth noting as well that white female showrunners are still three times more prevalent than non-white male showrunners and non-white female showrunners.

When the issue of sexism came up at the The Hollywood Reporter round table of TV drama actresses, Jennifer Lopez was quick to call out the bullshit “diva” double standard. Like she says, men get away with much worse behavior.
