The Meet

(Alternating between space gaps; Cassius meeting Death) 

My steps are gradual. Such a ghostly village I've been sent to. I stand utterly still, waiting. The mortal I sense fears me. I am feared by many, but why? I am the undeniable answer; The irreversible cessation of all mortal vitality.  A sweet release, is what I provide for all. The one named Cassius is now within my perception. My glare is quite piercing; Mortals often say.

Cassius leans against a pillar connected to one of the old buildings, and winces. The pain from their wound is almost unbearable. If he could just lie down and rest...

I am now behind them, my presence unknown. One shall see me: When the time is immaculate. Cassius is mortally wounded, I already know. I send a cold shiver through their spine, to let them know.

Cassius freezes in place as a shiver travels up their spine. Their body is growing cold. "N..No..."

I make myself bare to them. I stand now in front, observing the mortal. My arm extends out; A hand offered. My eyes fixed on their broken soul. "Cassius." My voice is serene, inviting.

Cassius stares back at Xym, fear overpowering every other emotion. Xyr voice seems to beckon them. They step back.

Silver eyes stare back. "Greetings." I begin. "You have called upon my attention." Tilting my hat; "I offer guidance. A sweet release, for you." Almost in a whisper I say. "You mustn't fear, mortal."

They grimace. "I-I don't need guidance, I'm-," they wince, "-perfectly fine. Good day." With that, they start walking away.

As expected from one who fears I. Silently, I follow beside them. I say nothing.

As they walk, they notice the heavy atmosphere that still surrounds them. "I said I am FINE. Go." They say, not turning around.

I whisper closely. Icy air trails down their back. "I will always, be here."

Cassius turns and faces death, their face white as snow. They consider giving in. Everything hurts, but if they gave in, it could stop.

My hand sets on his shoulder. I lean into the mortal, whispering "You mustn't fear..."

They push you away. "Not yet." They say in a shaky voice, "I have...business to attend to..."

I raise an eyebrow. "Hm." I could not complain with the mortal. I decide to let their soul be: Grant this one more time. "Not today I suppose... But you well know; All must come to an end." I turn around; Taking a gentle stroll down the path. "I shall return, mortal~" I warn before dissolving into the surrounding air.

As soon as Death disappears, Cassius keels over, shaking. All the fear they had held back comes crashing down on them all at once. Tears threaten to fall, but they never come.

I may have vanished, but I am watching from above. They gravely fear me, I know. This soul does not deserve to go farther; But I'll allow it. Unfinished business should be tended to.

Cassius walks on until they reach the city. It's dark out by now, it had taken them a while to get there. They walk to a small house and knock on the door. The assassin's house, they know it as.  As they wait, they fish money out of one of their various pouches.

I watch silently. What is the mortal wanting from an assassin? I am intrigued to find out; I continue observing Cassius.

Cassius enters the home and speaks to the assassin, Esvele. Esvele has evaded death several times due to her dangerous job. Cassius pays her and whispers something in her ear. She nods, then Cassius leaves.

Esvele is within my memoir. She has avoided me many times before. Though I wonder who Cassius would wish me upon to? My eyes follow them from above; Ever so silent I remain. I am but a faint breeze within the air.

Cassius returns to their house, feeling worse than before. They can't feel their midsection anymore, but that doesn't make it any better. The burning has moved to their chest; they can barely breathe.

I am watching from outside a window, and I feel something peck my cheek. It begins to faintly drizzle around me. I am still here; Waiting perhaps for their cave-in. I can sense the pain inflicted on them, and it's of necromancy. You mustn't fear I, for there is no need to.

Cassius leans against the wall and slides to the floor, tears finally falling. They close their eyes, passing out from pure exhaustion.

Like smoke, I enter through the door. I gradually walk towards them, crouching down to examine. Mortals prefer if I take them within their slumber. They say it's "peaceful." I drag a chilled finger down their face. I pass through their subconscious with the words "I have returned... Are you ready?"

They jolt awake and yell, falling over and coughing. "Stop THAT" they growl in between fits of painful coughs. They aren't dying. Not. Yet.

I stand up, sighing. "Hm, quite persistent aren't thy? But why live in such agony, Cassius?" Humans were the one that I could never understand, and as Death; I know positively everything. I have been here since the beginning of per say; "Time."

"Revenge." They growl, sitting up. The blackness has reached their neck. Their voice is fainter. "I'll die when I'm READY."

A grin curls my lips. I bow to them, tilting my hat as I straighten up. "If revenge is what you seek, then mote it be." I begin to dissolve once again. "Toodaloo~" I wave.

They moan, caving in on themself. A day passes...

I successfully guide at-least a dozen mortals that night. I roam around the town, anonymously. This town is quite lovely. Something inside me abruptly picks up a... What in the name of God? An immortal? They are somewhere nearby...
