First, consistency. Do not tease with one rub and stop. Unacceptable.

Second, pressure. Too soft? Feels like tickle. Too hard? Nyet, is painful. Must find balance.

Third, duration. Belly rub is not one-second pat. You commit, yes? A good belly rub should last until dog says stop -- or hooman’s hand falls off, whichever comes first.
