Makoto threw back his head and looked up at the vaulted ceiling as if to keep the tears from his cheek by force, but he did not speak again, and there the advisor found his reply. There was no one more precious to the Qasrian than the lad who had flown from their halls, and nothing to chill the warmth of the love that flourished in Makoto’s heart.

it’s these wordless moments that are sometimes most impactful.
*sigh* my heart can only take so much heartache

His heart was mirrored pulse for pulse in the East, and his love returned like the moonlight reflecting the day.

“There was boundless beauty in the smallest of things”
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
There was boundless beauty in the smallest of things, when Haruka stood beside him—and when his bridegroom was absent the sun was dim to his eyes, as if the dark-haired prince’s heart had taken its place in the ether.
“How do you fare, my love?”
Makoto lifted his lashes and found the high-boned face hanging an inch from his own, sweet with a hint of laughter as Haru bent to kiss him.
“There is no Heaven brighter than this, amarya,” he murmured, brushing back a raven curl as he took Haru’s hand in his.
For a while they sat without speaking, amidst the golden butterflies weaving to and fro through the garden. There was nearly time for the pair to fall into slumber, but at last they were made to stir from their quilt when Milad caught one of the farashas in his palm.
“Let her go, radhiy,” said Haru, opening the tiny fingers so the creature could take its leave. “She belongs in the wood with the flowers, and if you kept her in the palace the poor thing would die of grief.”
Milad watched the speck of orange recede into the skies until it grew too small to see, and once his quarry was gone he fell into Makoto’s lap and went to sleep at once.

The flames guttered in the draft before blazing up twice as bright as before, and in their doubled light he saw the warmth in his heart and knew it for what it was.

There is no actual, tangible reason why we allow people to starve, to be homeless, to suffer and die needlessly. Food is plentiful. Empty homes are plentiful. Medicine is plentiful. It’s hidden away behind constructs and we pretend those constructs mean something. There is an empty home and a homeless family, give them it. There is a sick child and common medicine to treat it, give it to them. There is a starving person and so much food wasted by corporations or hidden behind a dollar sign, feed them.

Whichever the universe, they will always, always belong to each other.
“How strange it is, my sister! To have borne a child and brought him up from a little mite of a thing, and yet from the first he was never mine, not as Aki is yours. His heart belongs to the Qasrian prince as his father’s belongs to me, and all the love he holds for the West could not part the two of them now.”

“...he himself would fade without the glow of the gentle eyes he loved so well”
^ this. ❤️
Please. I cannot reiterate enough how you all must read Sped by Flame.

In his youth Haru had often lain by the indigo shrubs in the courtyard with Aki and Rei, long enough to see them blossom under the rising sun. They scarcely stirred, at first, waking so slowly that when they moved he thought himself mistaken—and then the great lamp to the east rolled over the dunes like a wave, bringing the buds to life as they opened their throats to the warmth. The petals unfurled like a banner by the light of the waxing rays, and though they were cool and soft to his touch they burned like a garden of stars.
It was a pity that green was kept for the leaves, he thought, for surely such a color deserved the fairest of flowers to grace it—but perhaps it was better as it was, for without their foliage even the blooms of the desert would perish, as he himself would fade without the glow of the gentle eyes he loved so well, first as companion and then as a friend…and now his betrothed, as the princes were destined to be.
