Different Ways Characters Can Show Love

Part of the stigma around romance in fiction is how it can feel cut-and-paste when poorly written. Romance is so much more than ‘potential couple goes through struggles together’, it should be shaped by each character’s personality and backstory. Different characters are going to show love differently, and its often tied into how they were raised as children, and those difference can cause issues in relationships (even if it’s a situation where there is no real fault). A young man accustomed to getting small gifts from his mother might feel like his partner doesn’t love him if they don’t give small gifts, or a woman raised in a house where actions speak louder than words may find her partner’s constant “I love you”s to feel fake unless they back it up with more.

I’ve found general types of confirmation of feeling and have noted a few kinds of characters where they are most likely to appear.

Gifts: Giving things to a loved one to show affection. These things do not always have to be fancy, they can be a replacement of something that needed replacing or an item that the partner really wants. Gift-givers are likely to have been brought up in a family that (guess what) gives gifts. Typically, this shows more with non-poor families, but a character with a money-poorer background might see gifts as the ultimate act of love because they know how much money matters (or they might see it as overwhelming, depending the situation and character). A gift-giver can also just be a character who likes to see joyful reactions from other people.

Physical Touching (Non-Sexual): Small, physical gestures of love, such as hand-holding or shoulder touching. A character brought up in a family that didn’t give many hugs or is uncomfortable with PDA may feel overwhelmed by an over-touchy partner. Likewise, a character accustomed to tons of physical affection may feel unloved if their partner doesn’t reciprocate.

Words of Affirmation: “I love you”s and other sweet (and sometimes sappy) things to say. Characters with this method of love confirmation likely come from a family with lots of communication, and can think that words are the ultimate glue to everything. They might be very frustrated with a partner who believes in actions over words. This particular confirmation of feeling is usually found more in female characters because of societal conditioning where women are more likely to talk about how much they love someone.

Acts of Service: Doing things for a loved one. This can take the form of doing a chore that a partner hates, cooking for a sick partner, helping with a project, etc. These acts can either be asked for or not, but any character seriously devoted to the idea of “actions speak louder than words” would not need any prompting to provide an act of service. Characters who are into acts of service are often motivated to work for things and may not feel like a partner is ‘working hard enough’ if they don’t measure up to the service standard. This particular confirmation of feeling is usually found more in male characters because of societal conditioning that men are weak for expressing emotion, so they make up for it by physically working for their partner.

Time: Spending quality time together. This can take the form of playing a game together, or even just sitting in the same room doing separate things. Characters who prefer this method of affirmation like company and tend to be more laid back. Quality time is a spectrum though, and even two characters that prefer time together may find that their definition of ‘time’ doesn’t match up. Doing an activity together is not the same as sitting in the same room, even if they both fall under the same general category of affection.

It’s worth mentioning that characters can have multiple ways of expressing affection and that prioritizing one method doesn’t discount the rest. It’s just important to look at each character and figure out which method they’d be more likely to use, given their background and personality.

Then when a character deserves a redemption arc, people want it to be exactly like his. They don't understand different characters get different ways of redemption. Not everyone needs to be like his.

Hey, your self insert stories don’t have to be amazing or revolutionary. They can be totally chill and you can make your self insert as insignificant to the canon as you want. I received an anonymous message about Lotor killing Alteans the other day and deleted it since I wasn’t in the mood to argue that there is literally no proof of him doing so.

I have not watched season 8 because I am completely aware of all the BS that happens in it. And then I come across this. This is what they accused Lotor of doing when they only had half of a story that a character only knew half of. So a quarter of a story. Here we have the “heroes” doing exactly what they accused Lotor of doing when they had no definitive proof.

Gotta love heroes and their double standards. I’m so happy these were the heroes that prevented billions of deaths by murdering Lotor. Oh, wait...

so I was rewatching “The Zenith” yesterday and I accidentally came across this little tidbit. they snuck that in there. this, my friends, is exactly what they accused and executed Lotor for doing. but it’s all well and good if it’s the good guys doing it. the double standards of this show are appalling. I’m still in shock.

Deafening

Summary: Something is troubling Lotor, but you can’t speak over the silence.

Pairing: Lotor x GN Reader Drabble No pronouns used

It was unusual, this silence. There is rarely ever a quiet moment between you and Lotor. You often spend your time listening to his stories about his various travels before he met you, or discussing his research. This was nearly uncomfortable. He hadn't said much all day aside from giving his generals the occasional order. He was thinking, analyzing something and you couldn't determine what it was.

   It was hard to get a read on the Prince. He was guarded, his mind an enigma and hidden behind a carefully crafted barrier. You knew only what he wanted you to know. You knew without a doubt that he loved you more than anything but you also knew he wouldn't tell you when something was troubling you. You couldn't tell what it was exactly, but you knew something was troubling him.  Every time you asked, he'd just reply with, "You needn't worry, darling." You learned to not ask him that question anymore.

   While you preferred to not leave him alone with his thoughts, you decided to retire to your shared room for the evening. All you could do was hope that he'd come to you when he was ready. You found yourself sitting against the headboard of the plush bed, book in your hand in attempts to distract yourself from your racing mind. Your eyes roamed over the words, your fingers turning the pages, but your brain couldn't process the information. You were too busy worrying about Lotor. He always did his best to comfort you when your mind became your personal prison, so not being able to do the same for him was troubling you greatly. You felt useless, unable to assist him in any way.

   After what seemed like a varga had passed, the door to the room opened, startling you out of your thoughts. You watched as Lotor wordlessly removed his armor, piece by piece until he was stripped down to his black bodysuit. You put your book aside when he joined you in the bed. No words were spoken as they weren't necessary. He shifted you around so you were wrapped in his arms, your body between his long legs and back flushed against his chest. After a short while, your breathing was in sync; your chest rising and falling with his. His scent completely enveloped you: the scent of lavender was the most noticeable, as well as the unmistakable scent of cinnamon. It was soothing, comforting, and perhaps all he needed.

   You took one of his much larger hands into your own, still completely in awe at the difference in size. You turned it over so his palm was facing upwards. You lightly ran the tips of your fingers across the palm of his hand. The skin there was calloused, evidence of the countless years he spent fighting to get to where he is now. Proof of the hardships he had gone through and a reminder of what may come next. You brought his hand to your lips and placed a gentle kiss to the palm of his hand before lacing your fingers together, your thumb brushing repeatedly across the back of his own. A low, continuous rumble, a purr, was his only reply.

   The silence was deafening, but it said all you needed to hear.

Intro + Rules

Hello everyone!

I created this blog several months ago out of my love for Voltron. After thinking about it for quite some time, I’m ready to begin writing scenarios and headcanons for the characters that mean a lot to me. The characters I shall write for at the moment are:

Pidge

I want it to be known that I am not an Allura fan so I shall not be writing for her under any circumstances. It should go without saying, but I also do not ship her with Lotor, so please do not tag my works as Lotora. This is going to be an x Reader blog; there will be no character x character writing.

Due to current circumstances, I am unable to write often and will not be accepting requests until further notice. When I’m able to, I shall post more and create an official rules page. I hope to see you then.
