accidentally watched a stevebucky edit on twitter in the year of our lord 2025 and now i'm in my feelings like... do u think the mcu are aware they sort of stumbled onto a deeply compelling (extremely dark) storyline in the midst of one of the corniest periods of cinematic history (2010s marvel sludge). like. are they aware the extent to which they had it all and then fumbled it at the absolute last minute? this song was like a level 8 on the stevebucky scale, specifically the cover done by noah kahan and wesley schultz (from the lumineers) and it makes me sick and twisted so im going to talk about it

so this song, originally by jason isbell, is a duet of two people who want to be together forever but are aware of the reality that one of them will outlive the other, and even if they were immortal, (hence the title), its the fact that their lives are limited that gives them meaning and beauty and well. i listened to this and thought about teenage stevebucky and did the pedro pascal rock back and forth laugh cry. i've placed this when they're like 15/16 and i've got this scene in my head where neither of them have really contemplated the rest of their lives in any great detail but they do know that whatever they do they'll do it together and like not even in a romantic sense just like they're fused together at the hip they're a pair why would you separate them that's ridiculous.

the chorus says "It's knowing that this can't go on forever / Likely one of us will have to spend some days alone / Maybe we'll get forty years together / But one day I'll be gone / Or one day you'll be gone" and i'm just thinking about steve and how he's resigned to die first because his body can't keep up, that's what all the doctors have said his whole life and when he was 5 or 6 he got scarlet fever and steeled himself to die before his mother and that's a horrible thing to happen to anyone especially a little kid. and then i'm thinking about bucky who's very purposeful and serious and actionable and likes things to happen in a predictable way and being friends with steve is great and all but steve is an unknown variable in the sense that bucky can't place him in a box or predict what he's gonna do or anything, steve isn't certain. and i think where steve would align more with the writer's meaning, that a live well lived is beautiful even if its short, but bucky would rather they be vampires because if they can't die then that's one less thing he has to plan for.

and then there's the line "And hope it isn't me who's left behind" which like HAHA. lol. all they do for the next 80someodd years is leave each other behind.
