There's so many things about Candles and Windows in the Septimus Heap books - the Longest Night tradition, the storm candles Aunt Zelda places so her brother might find his way home... and of course after Jenna returns from the past, she promises herself that, once she is Queen, she will place candles in every window of the Palace to make the place feel alive again.

I always kind of wanted to see that.

November 2023 Prompt

This month's prompt is: Limitations

You can either use "limitations" as a thematic prompt, limit yourself in your creative process, or do both! Original art and fan art are both welcome, as is any art medium!

If anyone needs them, here are some ideas for creative limitations: Use only one brush/tool for your art, limit your color palette to 5 or less colors, limit your writing to a single page or less, write a story that fully takes place in a single location/hour, write a poem that uses every word only once, use only four chords to write an entire song, sketch with your non-dominant hand, or anything else that you can personally think of!

October 2023 Prompt

was Almost late for the first @monthlyartprompts whoops but yeah. not the best thing I've ever made but I made it in time lmao. my concept was oil spill mermaid and I don't think that translates at all rip (and I know it's probs been done to death anyway)

Here's my silly little guys for @monthlyartprompts! My first song was "Silhouette" by Devil and the Deep Blue Sea, so I decided to try my hands at shapes-based character design. I probably did that wrong, but I'm still happy with the results xD

My other songs reminded me of a play concept my roommate and I work on occasionally - so here's seven deadly siblings with Issues (TM) and maybe... a child? Definitely not. They wouldn't do that. Right?

I only have a really sloppy first draft to show for my @monthlyartprompts september challenge. Predictably, I finished the idea and first sketch at the beginning of the month and then procrastinated very hard. Bit off a bit too much there, I guess. Huh, well...

But yeah, I thought my tlt girlies* should be allowed a little bit of violence... as a treat. You get it below the cut because it's really pretty rough yet.

I hope I get to refine it a bit in the next week :P

September 2023 Prompt

This month's prompt is: 5 random songs

Get 5 random songs (can be from your favorite/liked songs playlist, given to you by friends, etc) and try to use inspiration from all of them in your art!

What to do:

You can write a story and use the songs as story beats or imagine scenes they would be good background music for! You can design a character based on them/make fanart of a character who you think would enjoy those 5 songs, draw/write about an event where this would be the playlist, you can use the songs for different aspects of your art (1 for color inspo, 1 for setting, etc) or anything else you feel inspired to do with your new 5 song playlist!

Ways to choose songs:

Hit shuffle on your liked songs and note down the first 5 songs, hit shuffle on your favorite playlist and note down the first 5 songs, ask friends/family without telling them what for to name the first 5 songs they can think of, pick out 5 albums and use a random number generator for each to pick a track, tune in to a radio station that plays genres you like, or any other way you can think of!

Once-A-Month Art Prompts!

If you are like me, then you really like the idea of art challenges like Mermay, Inktober, etc, but you can never actually find the time and motivation to finish them—which is why I'm starting this blog! My hope is that by limiting the amount of prompts to just 12 per year, people like me will feel less overwhelmed by them.

I'll be sharing a prompt on the first of every month and then reblog every contribution that you make on here, hopefully creating not only a fun exercise for artists but also an easy way of finding artists to follow that you would'nt've found otherwise!

Lastly, this is for all creatives! Some prompts will naturally lend themselves more to a certain kind of art (like writing, drawing, painting, scultping, songwriting, etc) but I will do my best to make all of them as accessible to as many artists as I possibly can!

We'll be starting with once-a-month prompts on September 1st, 2023!
