HAMLET LEGION 2024
We are finally ready to publish our 2nd edition of the Hamlet Legion: a birthday zine dedicated to celebrating HamletMachine's birthday!
12 artists and authors came together to share how one artist's unrelenting perseverance and kindness has affected (and still does!) their creative journeys! We celebrate not the sentimental meaning surrounding HamletMachine's works, but also the creator themself. And now we invite all of you to join us in offering our joy to a creator who has offered us theirs for so many years!
Download it here:
https://monstermash-zine.itch.io/hamlet-legion-2024
The zine is available as a free download PDF. However, we do take donations.
All proceeds will be donated to charities dedicated to providing Palestinians with emergency health care, food, and shelter.

Okay! Uh! This is me, totally ignore me in case my anon ask is ignored too -- it's just cause of guilt cause y'all were nice -- So I may as well just say wow I loved it sm last time and I'm super sorry I didn't make it this time in time--December-Feb was legit so busy and I didn't even see the applications on Twitter -- so just, being a little weird and saying uh, in case I'm remembered and you were wondering why a member didn't return. She just MISSED IT. SORRY
Hope to see it next year so I can join-! 💛
Spash! I'm so sorry to hear you missed the deadline! Q A Q
We're unfortunately not planning on holding any pinch-hitter applications. However, we might be working on a little extra contributor category, where we'd match artists to one of our select authors to create spot art/cover art, but nothing is set in stone as of right now.
If we do go through with this idea, we'll issue out an official statement.
But, as I said, please don't hold your breath on this! We're still very much discussing this possibility, and trying to come up with a proper timeframe.
If we don't go through with this, we'll be missing your wonderful presence! There's always next year! Q u Q///

🌟 APPLICATIONS CLOSED 🌟
That's it, everyone! Contributor applications for the MonsterMASH! zine are finally closed!
We want to thank all of our applicants who took the time to come up with a flurry of creative and compelling stories for us to comb through! Once again, you've provided the mod team with a catalogue of unexpected tropes, characters, and scenarios, and we look forward to reviewing your applications.
We also want to apologize to those whom lacked proper time, motivation, or comfort, and therefore missed the deadline. We hope you'll stick around and help us celebrate the coming year.
There is always next year! O u O//
Application results will be exclusively communicated via the email address provided in your application. Acceptance and rejection emails will be sent out to all applicants by the 15th of March, 2024, at the very latest. Please keep an eye on your spam/junk inbox.
You should expect an email from [email protected]. No one else. No one on the moderation team will attempt to reach out to you on their personal email addresses.
If you applied to the MonsterMASH! zine, but do not receive an answer from us by March 15th, 2024, it's because the email you provided on your application was faulty or incorrectly spelt. We will not be making attempts to rectify this mistake by reaching out to you through alternative methods.
If you do not hear from us by March 15th, assume your application was rejected.
Moving forward, most email communications will be reserved for our contributors. Readers and future applicants should still feel free to reach out to us through Tumblr asks, particularly for these following reasons:
Charities dedicated to helping Palestinians
Potential themes for next year's MonsterMASH!
General encouragements for our contributors
Once again, we want to thank all of our applicants. We will be in touch very soon!

Hello! I submitted a few pitches last round that I am still itching to write. Is it possible to tweak and resubmit one or two of our previous pitches for this round?
Thank you!
I'm not sure I fully understand your question. I'll try to answer as best as I can! O u O7
1) If you mean to imply that you've participated in, or applied to the previous MonsterMASH! zine (Halloween 2023) and would like to reuse pitches you previously submitted but didn't use, you're absolutely free to do so!
2) If you mean to say you'd like to edit some of the pitches you've already submitted for this year's MonsterMASH! zine, please don't send us a 2nd application. We ask that you instead reach out to us via email ([email protected]) in order to avoid any potential mistakes from double entries in the data sheets.
Simply let us know which email you applied with, as well as the changes you'd like to make to your pitches, and we'll manually edit the application you've already sent in.
I hope one of these answered your question. I apologize if this answer doesn't, I'm not quite sure if I'm reading your question correctly. Q u Q

What's the expected deadline for applicants to hear back?
Applicants can expect to receive an email from us concerning the result of their application at any point between March 1st, 2024, and March 15th, 2024. We reach out to all applicants to let them know whether we would like to host them or not.
Please make sure to check your spam folder!
If you don't hear from us within that time, it means an incorrect email address was provided. In which case, the application will be discarded.
Thank you so much for reaching out to us about this! We hope this answer is satisfactory.
We wish all of our applicants the best of luck! O u O//

i only found out about this zine today, and was interested in applying as an artist at first, but asking for 3 different concrete (and mandatory) pitches on its own is already a tall order for a zine i haven't even been accepted to yet, and having to supply sketches on top of it is even worse! a detailed summary seems like a lot to ask up front for writers, too... i vibe with this zine's mission, but that's just too many requirements for a mere application. i hope you'll consider this feedback for next year.
Henlo! O u O///
I'm sorry to hear of your feelings on our application process, but I hope this will help clear some of your concerns.
Our application process doesn't ask for concrete pitches or sketches. As far as I've been able to gather, it's customary for zines to ask for pitches during the application process. I don't have a lot of experience when it comes to participating in zines, so I spend a lot of time looking into the application of other zines and conferring with my mods about the best procedures for us.
It may seem like a matter of schemantics, but we don't ask for sketches, we ask for concept thumbnails. From my understanding, a single thumbnails should take no more than a few minutes to create, and is designed to be a very rough draft of a sketch. It usually focuses solely on the main focus point, and is often subject to extensive changes throughout the production process.
While my wording was initially misleading during the first edition, back in 2022, I've since been corrected by a very patient applicant, and the wording has been justly rectified in this year's application requirements.
We ask for thumbnails, not sketches.
Adding to that, when pressed on the issue of whether this was a bothersome or unreasonable requirement during an anonymous performance survey, our contributors had no qualms with this aspect of our application process. This being said, we'll revisit this issue with our future contributors once the project is over, and will work on making changes from that.
As for our authors' application, we've actually lowered our requirements from last year's applications. Where we previously required a 500 word blurb for each of our authors' pitches, we now ask for a detailed description.
When asking for a description, we're asking for anything from a summarized run-down of the intended piece, an intended pairing (FF werewolf/human; Mer!BakuDeku; etc), character descriptions, fandoms, or any other information which may help paint a picture for us.
I've looked into a large number of writing anthologies, and our requirements are quite lenient in comparison.
This may help understand our expectations a little better:
At the end of the day, how much you give us is entirely up to you. It isn't mandatory to provide thumbnails or detailed descriptions. We have applicants who've ignored our requirements before, and it was of no real issue to us.
The reason for our extensive requirements is deeply tied to this project's missions, however, and allows us to select through a wide variety of stories and characters. The MonsterMASH! zine strives to bring people together, and create a product in which stories and art actively coexist. Our application's requirements allow us to meet our project's mission of showcasing a wide array of stories.
It helps us sort through applicants who may have pitches which are a little too similar to another's, and choose which creator would be better suited for our project. This process has worked wonderfully for us so far, and was met with fairly positive feedback.
You're under no obligations to provide us with anymore information than you're willing to offer us. We will consider your application regardless. However, other applicants who do meet our requirements will likely score higher than you, and we'll be made to consider their application before yours.
On a different note, I'd hate to leave any aspiring applicant to feel disappointed. My mods are very busy, and I feel it unfair to ask any impromptu work out of them when they're not paid to help me. However, I think it shouldn't be too much additional work on us to offer you some additional time to work on your application!
If you'd like a few extra days to turn in an app, feel free to reach out to us via email ([email protected]), and we'll see to it that you get a bit of an extension.
Thank you so much for reaching out, anon!

dear mod, I know you said in the faq that human-like monsters will not be considered unless partially/fully shifted at all times, but I was wondering if vampires make the cut. I know they're in a very gray area bc a lot of ppl portray them as humans (or as past humans, or as indistinguishable from a human) but what if my vampires are more of a The Lost Boys type (clearly deranged, fangs out, soaked in blood all the time kinda deal)? I may or may not have a couple of ideas regarding vampires but I want to know the zine's stance before pitching them.
Also not entirely unrelated, what about "human-like" characters that only look human for a small part of the story? I'm thinking of things like a succubus/demon/kitsune here, that might look human-like at first but upon closer inspection she's got monster bits like tails etc
Sorry if this is too much of a bother, your faq is super clear, I just read that we have to pitch a bunch of ideas in the form and of course that opened up a can of worms in my brain with like 17 different kinds of stories and I wanna choose properly. That will also help me choose what to send as samples bc ya girl got overwhelmed with herself over here.
thank u mod you are a doing the (monsterfucking)lord's (?) work
Henlo! O u O///
Please don't worry about asking, I really appreciate that you've reached out to us about this. If you're unsure, it means others likely are as well.
All monsters are accepted in the zine!
Vampires included. O u O
I know some will likely be discontent and potentially feel it unjust of us to include vampires, but refuse monsters depicted in their human forms. It's understandable. Thankfully, there are a few monsterfucking zines out there that may be willing to mitigate this discrepancy on our part.
Monsters appearing as human but shifting throughout the story is allowed. The only condition is that they should be fully shifted when engaging in NSFW scenarios. So, you could very well submit a story about a succubus luring out men, only to show their true form when when things get spicy. 🌶😤
I hope this clarifies some things for you (and others who might've also been wondering) and look forward to your application! Thank you so much!

Henlo! O u O///
I'm so sorry to hear that you're experiencing these inconveniences! Twitter's gotten increasingly difficult for so many.
Thank you for reaching out to us about this.
You can find all of the links here (updated). It contains all of the links to our various applications (artist, author, and merch artist) as well as a link to the Applicant's Infosheet, and a very nifty masterpostoffering tips to make your application the very best it can be.
Alternative, you could opt to use Bluesky; you'll find our links here (updated). If should contain all of the same information you'll find over on our twitter.
Again, thank you so much for reaching out to us! I look forward to reviewing your application! O u O///

Tumblr Takeover
I've been really naughty about keeping up with our social media page on Tumblr. The truth is: I do the largest part of my work (including formatting the zine, creating promotional posters, and answering emails) directly from my personal phone.
Some of you will think it's crazy, but I absolutely hate sitting at my PC for hours. Being able to work on this project everywhere, be it on the bus, at work, at a restaurant, during a party, or wherever I find myself when I have some down time is super convenient for me, and lessens the amount of stress I take on with this project.
That being said, Tumblr's mobile interface is shit...
I'm sorry to everyone who enjoys it, or finds it simple. I wish I were on the same page as all of you. But because of this I've been horrible at keeping up with this platform. Q n Q
I apologize.
From now on, Mod Nickel will be picking up after me on here. They've been granted access to this account and will be able to promote the MonsterMASH! zine, as well as answer any asks! I ask that you all treat them with the utmost respect. O u O
I will still have access to this account and be able to answer asks as well. Anonymous asks will remain open, so please don't hesitate to reach out to us. You can still reach out via email, as well.
Thank you for your patience and understanding!

i need to be blunt, I adore your FaQ, i like it even if I do not like lolisho at all. I love your answers to "Question: Why are you allowing contributors to apply entirely anonymously?" and "Question: Why are you organizing this?' , those were nice to read, i never found a zine that was designed like this and makes me so happy that this is being made.
I keep working on a reply that doesn't devolve into an absolute emotional mess, but it's not working at all. XD
I'm really sorry for this late reply, Anon. I hope you'll forgive me.
I'm so glad to know that you appreciate my FAQs, as well as the mission of this project. It's very personal to me, and I have very high expectations for myself, so reading this is very rewarding, and such a relief. Q u Q I feel like I'm doing something right when I spend a lot of time worrying about things I may be doing wrong.
I hope this project will bring about some peace of mind for those who partake in it, be it as contributors or as readers and supporters. I'll be doing my utmost to make it happen. Please look forward to it! \\O u O//
Thank you for sharing this with me, Anon. And sorry again for the late reply.

Hi, sorry for the potentially dumb question- what does it mean to apply as a "supporter"?
Henlo! O u O///
I'll clarify! When we say "supporter", we mean people who would be interested in reading the finished zine, download the merch, and potentially buy a physical copy.
I hope this is helpful for you. Please don't hesitate to reach out if you have anymore questions for us!
