38. Cold reality
We go back to January 2015. The first month back in Blighty was ridiculously tough. You went straight into the local hospital, welcomed by the grim reality of the UK health care system; it was a complete shock. The Sydney rehab unit was modern, progressive in its approach. In stark contrast, the Lincoln hospital like stepping back in time. Sadly, our only option. The nightmare unfolded. The flight and new surroundings took it’s toll on your body and your mental well being. Infections flared. You caught MRSA. The little speech you had, deteriorated. You went from being super positive and buoyant, to utterly distraught. At first, they insisted I leave you on the ward. How on earth was I to function in the world? How would you get on without me as your translator? I was the only one who knew your ways of communicating, you were so new to them. I didn’t know a soul. I used to walk, riddled with worry into the city, try and explore, try and treat it like an adventure. Counting the hours until I could see you again. It was bitterly cold.  Sometimes I would take solace in the great cathedral. Stay warm, light a candle and wonder what on earth I should do. No religious connotations, just a serene spot, a space which made me, a stranger, feel welcome. Overwhelmed was an understatement. Deep breaths. Your face and emotions when I arrived back with you, told me all I needed to know. If I was to try and help you settle, I needed to negotiate. The ward team agreed, after much avoidance of the topic, that things were calmer when we were together. After weeks of torture, it was agreed I could come as and when. Keeping you company, working on speech therapy exercises, providing sensory massages, attempting to make you smile, showering you with love, hugs and affection. You were all I knew and all I wanted. To help you find you again.
