My current 'travel project.' The No-Fuss Shade-Loving Shawl. Using teensy size 2s and teensy fingering weight yarn makes my fingers ache but I love this shawl so much! The Decemberist Shawl is on the needles! I was so excited to start this project when I bought the yarn a few weeks ago from @liftbridgeyarns and I finally got to get going on it last night. Pattern calls for 11s but that size didn't work for me at all (or most of the people on Ravelry that also made this shawl). So it's on 15s and I'm so much happier with the tension. I've decided to start posting a series of knitting rants. I don't consider myself by any means an expert knitter, but I consider myself intermediate enough haha. so I figured I would start doing a series of things that I noticed that I wish I knew when I first started knitting or that I'm learning as I go because it's always a learning experience even if you are super awesome knitter

Today's post is about knitting one project with multiple yarns. I made the mistake of starting with my favorite yarn that I was most excited to knit with and now that I have moved on to the other yarns-which are also very nice- they are not as exciting to knit with as the first one. so I guess the moral is save the best to last?

gay vs queer

I see those posts going around about using “gay” as an umbrella instead of “queer,” somehow claiming only one of these is a slur (and that it’s somehow not the one I’ve literally gone into schools to talk about not using as an insult *cough*gay*cough*).

But mostly, the thing that hits the most is how excruciatingly DIFFERENT the concepts of Gay-as-umbrella-term and Queer-as-umbrella-term function. Once upon a better time, I hadn’t experienced this distinction first hand. 

It is no longer that better time. 

People said he was gay, although he was bi, and he called himself gay as well. By people, I mean my coworkers and higher ups. Sadly, he was also in that category. 

This is someone who would brag about busting employees for doing the exact same shit on the clock that he pulled. Someone who told teenage employees (at the same job level) that it was unprofessional for them to be dating, while he himself dated the much younger employee directly below him. Someone who demonstrated over and over and over again how few shits he gave about anyone else. 

I remember the extreme strangeness of having cishet coworkers go, he’s gay, like you! and my fellow queer employees and I going, He’s nothing like us. I remember having no words to explain the sheer split I was seeing between what I then considered Gay-the-sexuality and Gay-the-identity. More and more now, though, I see the difference as that old chestnut of Gay Assimilation vs Queer Liberation. 

He was gay. He was flamboyant. And none of this had any bearing in how he thought people should be treated. He was gay, but he was Just Like You! as long as that “you” is someone in charge who can sit in his office and audibly laugh at his employees’ mistakes. 

And then there’s my queer coworkers, who immediately brought on a higher specificity of identity and a refusal to erase themselves. People who look at the many horrors baked into heteronormativity and cissexism and go “Yeah, how about we don’t take that with us” and use that to expect and demand better treatment of themselves and others. 

The difference between “I’m slightly different, but don’t worry, only slightly! I’m still Just Like You*” and “I am opting out the bullshit, and you** are free to join me because we all deserve better.” That’s what it came down to. (*You the person judging people, **you the person who could use a hand.) 

I’m gay and I’m queer. Those are two distinct concepts in my head, and I am certainly not pointing at those who simply call themselves gay and calling them wrong or bad or any such thing. It’s simply that when I see these posts Demanding We Stop Saying Queer, I think of this difference. Of respectability politics, when those we’re trying to get respect from? Are often not terribly deserving of respect themselves.

And then, on the other hand, queer liberation: the active struggle of rewriting your worldview to adjust to the facts that there are infinite genders, far more varieties of biological sex than we’ve been taught, that having either of the two has no bearing on your worth or abilities, and that people, get this, are worthwhile. 

tl;dr: If you’re going to call yourself gay, I hope it’s because that’s who you are, and not who you’re trying to tone down yourself to be. But if you’re going to demand that people stop calling themselves queer, I hope you stop to think about what Being Queer can actually mean to people, and maybe realize that to stop? Would be the very worst outcome.
