#yarn is love

When I was in middle school, I tried to learn how to crochet. I knew how to knit already, so I figured ‘how hard could it be’ and used my Christmas money on a brand new set of aluminum hooks and a how-to book.

To say it was difficult was an understatement. I spent hours pouring over my book, begging to gain some inkling of understanding from what felt like incomprehensible runes. My reward? One lopsided trapezoid of lumpy fabric and a resolve to never pick up a crochet hook again.

And so life went on, I finished middle school and high school without giving crochet so much as a second glance. In college, I read about how crochet couldn’t be replicated by a machine, it was unique in a way that knitting and many other fiber arts weren’t.

For Christmas last year, my girlfriend gave me what I now consider to be my most prized possession: a crocheted plush of my favorite pokemon. I raved over her skills and, since she never learned how to knit, we decided to have a yarn date at some point and teach each other our respective skills.

We never did get around to that yarn date. She passed a few months after our declaration, leaving me to inherit what was left of her yarn.

Nearly a decade after my initial attempt, I got ready for the toughest battle of my life. My weapons? One skein of yarn, a YouTube video, and a crochet hook that I had somehow never gotten rid of.

I slowly made my way through the video, redoing my work a couple times until I was satisfied with my product: a small, slightly misshapen rectangle.

I looked at my pristinely-made pokemon plush with hope for the first time in months and thought to myself, ‘maybe crocheting isn’t the hardest thing in the world, maybe you were just 12.’

Maybe this isn’t the hardest thing in the world. Maybe I’m just 21.

sometimes you’re sitting in your nice comfy armchair just working on your knitting when the amalgamation of past scrapped projects comes alive off the cutting room floor and is smitten with you because it’s full of the remnants of the love and effort you put into your craft

Cats! I think this turned out super cute! Worked up pretty fast, too, surprisingly.

I am trying a new brand of yarn (alize: Diva) to see how it works out. Overall, I like it and will likely continue using it in the future.

People asking me if I'm going to start selling crochet items, because I like crocheting and they liked looking at what I've made:

1) I don't monetise my hobbies,

2) Hugo cost me over $200 in materials and labour,

3) NOBODY is going to pay me $240 (+shipping) for an 8" crocheted frog, because people are less willing to pay an artist rather than look for a cheaper corporation manufactured thing

Crocheting is not the type of hobby you do to make money from. Crocheting is the type of hobby that you do because you love it, and it is time consuming and expensive.

If someone gifts you something they made out of yarn, with their own hands, it's because THEY LOVE YOU.

Hey, so I needed to make something huggable and purl soho’s big snowy owl pattern had a familiar silhouette so… I made this guy… (is this fan art? It feels weird calling my knitting art…)

(The eye plate is… inelegant… but it is also reversible! So, you win some you loose some.)

I will credit you on my ravelry project page of course but I would also like to borrow one or two of your photos so I can give people context. Is it ok if I do that? Are they watermarked? I could put your name on them.

Also I will be making a post where I link to the pattern (which is free) and give directions on how I made the eye plate— though if you have the skills to make this pattern the eye is pretty self explanatory. The only important non visible thing is that I lined it in poly batting which keeps the stuffing from falling out but in this case more importantly gives the buttons that hold the eye plate a much stronger anchor.

Anyway, I can tag you in that post if you like! I love your art and it’s given me a lot of joy this week when everything is garbage.

WAHHHH this is SO cool. The reversible eyeplate is stunning and I'm looking forward to learning more about how you did it. Would also be glad to hear more about how you optimized huggability. I'm glad it helped you get through this wretched week!!

Walking into a yarn shop like it's an art museum. Admiring all the colorways and textures of the various skeins. Nodding my head at the tasteful displays of handmade items by the local knitting/crochet group to demonstrate the different yarn brands. Talking to the owner to learn more about the local fiber art scene and learning about different dyers, and crafters in the area that I would have never found on the internet. Buying one too many skeins to continue my pursuit of creating beautiful things to bring joy into mine and others lives. My way of paying homage to this wonderland of fibrous beauty.
