Personal Statment
My earliest memory of music was when I was 5 years old sitting at my Nan’s piano playing around with the keys. I became very interested in the instrument so my parents bought me my first keyboard. I used to copy the melody notes by ear from the demo on the keyboard and played along with it perfectly.
I also liked singing very much so I joined the school choir. I enjoyed both the music itself and having the opportunity to perform in front of an audience. I got told I had a good voice from the teachers and I was chosen to sing the solo of ‘Once in Royal David’s City’ which very much boosted my confidence in the future.
I have always been interested in technology, I have always understood it. For example, most of the time if my friend had a problem with something on her computer, I could always find out what was wrong and sometimes I could fix the problem for her. When I got my first laptop, I downloaded the free software called ‘Audacity’ which is an Audio editor for recording, slicing, and mixing audio. I always wanted to explore that sort of thing.
Using this software, I helped my dance teacher out in one of the shows we put on. It was a melody track and I had to cut one of the songs out of it, which I managed to do smoothly. At the time, I felt like I could have done more but I didn’t know how, so with my musicality skills and my interest in technology, I decided to take the Music Technology course at North West Kent College to increase my knowledge and develop practical skills.
I have learned many things during my first year at College. Firstly I got to know the recording software we use called ‘Logic’. The equipment we use at the college is very good and professional so the outcome is often work of good quality. Using logic, I have learned to record, produce and mix competently using high quality microphones and mixing consoles.
I have also learned about most of the tools and how to use them, for example, by using automation you can change the volume on parts of the channel. We have carried out a lot of group work which has facilitated our development, through promoting peer group feedback on your work and how to improve.
One of our projects was to put on a production, it was called ‘Sensory Overload’ which was a ‘Sound Installation’. For my part in the show I sang in various sections. I also contributed a lot of ideas which enabled everyone to be more creative with the show. I also provided live sound effects on the microphone because I had to be in the role of a mother with a baby in the womb. I took a lot of responsibility for that section of the show.
When one of the singers dropped out of a gig at college I stepped in to perform and had to write my own song. I have had extensive experience of song writing, as it was one of our course units. We had to write 3 songs and record it on logic.
I hope to develop my skills further at college this year; how to mix better, manage live sound and attain a better understanding of the physics and technical aspects of music technology.
Outside of college I have gained performing experience at local pubs and festivals. In these performances I mostly sing and occasionally play keyboard. I am currently working my way through the keyboard grades and this musical discipline dovetails well with my college work.
For many years I studied various forms of dance at a local school, attaining grade 4 in both tap and modern. I believe such experience has helped me gain a broader insight into music and live performance with regular shows put on in front of a live audience.
There are a range of careers you can access through music technology. Personally, I need to experience and get involved in a lot more to see what I am best at in this subject. Many things have interested me, like working in a theatre/venue to be a live sound engineer, or being a producer in a studio working with record artists. My next step after completing level 3 music technology extended diploma is to go to university to study a degree. I think going to university would benefit me a lot in what I would like to do as it will make my understanding bigger and better and would open many more doors in this subject.
