     ❝ Please, call me Yamato. ❞  Tenzoō grins sheepishly at the compliment, though. It was truly an honour to be praised by someone of such a high status. Compliments weren’t something he was used to, either. It was hard to know how to respond to such things when he was never raised to embrace emotion or feeling. 

     There was a slight feign in his modesty as he rubs the back of his head, much like Kakashi would in this situation. 

     ❝ Thank you, but it wasn’t all my doing. Naruto played a huge part in it, too. His ability to suppress the Nine-Tail’s chakra on his own is really quite impressive in itself. I only serve to reinforce his control, you see. ❞

His head bowed, so that he didn’t have to hold Tenzō’s gaze while he thought. Sai could see why people thought the jonin’s eyes were unsettling. Instinctively, he plucked one of the books Danzou had given him from his bag. He wasn’t reading it, but had come to treat it like a…what was the word? A social crutch? “ And you would have me call you ‘teacher’, then? Treat you like the other teams treat their leaders? Are you meant to be my brother? ”

The tone in his voice was cut and dry, laden with the same disinterest in his eyes. Sai lifted his gaze, appraising the other man. He lacked the right edge to put any meanness behind the questions, but could give a very convincing cold shoulder. “ I don’t see you like that, Captain. I see you as a superior on this mission, and then a means to my end. Nothing else. ” But, his inherent curiosity meant that he couldn’t help but probe further. “ Do you truly think that I am actively isolating myself? ”

     So that’s how it’s gonna be. Tenzō simply nods his head and decides not to press the matter any further, Sai’s cold look was a reminder of just how cruel Danzō could be to his subordinates. He understood the kind of life Sai had been subjected to. ROOT Shinobi were the darkness of the village. They had no past, no future, no name, no emotions, they only had the mission. 

     It was not Sai’s fault for acting the way he was, and Tenzō certainly would not be one to blame him for this, nor expect anything different. Unsure how to truly respond to this, he considers what Kakashi would do in this situation. That man was all about teamwork. 

     ❝ Well, yes. ❞  He finally answers.  ❝ You need to remember that as a team, we are required to work together. That means cooperating with your fellow comrades. I feel that it would be best to get to know the other two a little, so that you may find it easier to fight alongside them. ❞

      Kakashi’s voice echoed in his mind as he continued to speak. ❝ Teamwork is the key. ❞

Briefly, Sai thought that there were no feelings to ‘press into’. Had he not made that clear when he had first met Team Seven? But, it would be rude to correct his superior in such a way. He stared blankly at the elder man, nodding only once to show that he was listening. When he thought it appropriate to interrupt, he offered some semblance of a smile. 

“ I think, Captain, ”        The ANBU began, but then his lower jaw clenched with a sharp pain. He was not allowed to talk about these sorts of things. Shimura Danzou had had strong opinions of the man now before Sai– but those were not for repeating. “ I think that you shouldn’t worry about me. I am not the objective of your mission, and you are not the objective of mine. Or, am I wrong? ”

     Silently, he understood. The fingers continued to tap against his thigh for another moment before he folds his arms across his chest. He was not going to have a deep conversation with this boy, that much was clear. But it was okay, Tenzō had once been under the same sort of strict rules, too. 

     ❝ As my comrade and student, it is my mission to look after you. ❞  he reassured, and it was the truth. As Kakashi’s replacement, he was to take on all the same responsibilities as his former captain, which included the concern of their wellbeing. 

     ❝ You’re part of this team just as much as Sakura and Naruto. I get that you don’t get along with them too well, but try not to exclude yourself from the team. ❞

He almost regretted speaking up. Though he had never felt threatened by Tenzō ( Yamato … Kinoe … his mind raced with the names this man carried ), and supposed that that could be considered a type of ‘trust’ in of itself…he had never intended to be open with him. Not when they’d first met, and certainly not now. Now? With emotions beginning to bud in his consciousness? Openness was vulnerable and ached like digging his fingers into a fresh bruise. ( Sai wanted to rip the buds out and pretend he had said nothing. ) 

“ Forgive me, captain, it was a pointless observation. I only meant that my perspective is different. I sometimes do not see what others do. ”

     ❝ I’m not going to press into your feelings. ❞  Tenzō, of all people, knew all too well what it was like to have thoughts intruded on, or to be forced to speak about feelings that should not exist in the first place. The last thing he wanted to was to pressure his comrade, but at the same time, he figured he would be the best person for Sai to speak to about his troubles. 

     ❝ But I want you to know that you can be open with me if you feel troubled. There’s no judgement here. We both come from that place, and I feel that I can understand you better than anyone, Sai. ❞

     ❝ Yeah... ❞  Coming from the man who essentially ruined his life, those words seemed foreign and were largely unexpected. He didn’t trust the Sannin’s words one bit, but for now, he’d play along to avoid a violent confrontation. He doesn’t stand a chance against Orochimaru, and he’d rather keep things calm. 

     ❝ That’s exactly what I think.. ❞

     ❝ I missed you, Kakashi-senpai. ❞  A small smile stretched across his lips, happy to see his captain again. Of course, he truly knew Kakashi would be fine, he’s one of the greatest shinobi of Konohagakure, after all!

     Tenzō contemplated these words for a moment. Knowing of his past, and knowing exactly of Sai’s similar experiences from ROOT. Cruelty was never something he truly considered since Yukimi’s death. They had done things from the shadows that would be considered borderline evil. His fingers tapped against his thigh as he stared at his pale student. 

     ❝ Is something on your mind, Sai? ❞

     ❝ Uh... ❞  Wordplay wasn’t his forte, and now he had a headache trying to decipher that sentence. This kid was nothing but strange. How did Tenzoō always manage to get caught up with the weird ones? Perhaps he could mimic that kind of word behaviour...

     Tenzō’s tongue rolled around his mouth for a moment as he contemplated her words and tone, his eyes narrowed irritably. He did not trust her, and right now, she was standing on thin ice. He may need to apprehend her should she continue to make blatant threats. 

     ❝ That’s to assume I can’t swim, and I can assure you that I know how to swim. I’d watch your tongue if I were you, threatening a Konoha official is highly frowned upon and can get you into a lot of trouble, miss. ❞
