"A Cry from a Tattered Tent"

On one harsh winter night, under a starless sky, I sat in a tattered tent battered by cold winds. I held my infant, too weak even to cry from hunger. Around me were my three other children, their faces pale, their eyes filled with tears, and their frail bodies trembling. I searched their faces for the spark of life that war had stolen.

We once lived in a beautiful home in a lively neighborhood filled with laughter and memories. My brother's voice used to echo with jokes and stories, and I worked hard to give my children a decent life. But everything changed in an instant.

One night, the sound of bombs shattered the calm. Explosions rained down like deadly rain, erasing the laughter of children and destroying the home that had sheltered our dreams.

We fled with nothing—no home, no safety. I saw my brother killed before my eyes, unable even to scream. I carried my children in my arms, running frantically in search of refuge. We passed streets filled with rubble and lifeless bodies lying on the ground. Little did I know, this was only the beginning.

Now, in this tent, we fight hunger and fear every single day. Every morning, I wake to the cries of my children asking for food I don’t have. Hunger has carved deep into their small, fragile bodies, and I feel utterly helpless.

Once, I gave them crumbs of bread I had hidden, but my infant couldn’t even swallow it; hunger had already defeated him.

Water is scarce, and food is nothing more than a distant dream. The little we receive barely keeps them alive. I try to appear strong for their sake, but at night, I cry silently. I remember our happy days and wonder: how did we end up here?

I write these words from the depths of pain, pleading for help. My children are dying before my eyes, and I have nothing left but this cry. If there is any mercy left in this world, let someone extend a hand. We ask only for a morsel of food to ease our hunger and a blanket to protect us from the cold.

I pray that our cries reach those who can hear, that compassion will prevail over war. We are human beings, yearning for a chance to live again.

Mohamed, his wife Samah, and their four children are currently living in a worn-out tent 🏕️ in Al-Zawaida after being displaced four times from northern Gaza due to the war. The tent offers no protection from the bitter cold ❄️ or the rain 🌧️ that seeps through, leaving their small bodies trembling from hunger and cold 🥶. Every corner of the tent tells a story of unbearable pain 💔 and a faint glimmer of hope for salvation 🌟.

Their children—Jana (10 years old), Maryam (8 years old), Aisha (4 years old), and Diaa (11 months old)—are enduring suffering beyond their years 😔. Diaa, the infant 🍼, barely gets what he needs to survive, while his mother, weakened by malnutrition, struggles to provide for him. The cold pierces their small bodies ❄️, and illnesses are an ever-present threat 🚨 in the absence of basic living conditions.
