This is a very practical and helpful article about preemptive work library workers can do now to help protect ourselves during the next administration. It's written for public libraries, but I found lots here relevant to academic libraries and institutions with any public funding or stakeholders:
"The thing that will protect your library collection the most is your suite of collection development policies. These policies might be one single policy with several sections or several policies that fall under the umbrella of collection management. These include not only the types of materials you acquire but also how you make those decisions—we know that books don’t simply appear on shelves. Explain the review sources you use and why they’re used, as well as explain where and how recommendations from the community and from the professional field come into consideration. Be as clear as possible about the difference between review materials used to make collection decisions and tools used to help in reader advisory."

Okay, so when people try to speak on BIPOC's involvement in queer history, it is often simplified into just being about individual people like Marsha P. Johnson. While I am never going to say we should talk less about Marsha, I think it would be worth exploring more how BIPOC have a queer history of their own and often it's outside of just the context of the United States of America.
Prioritizing certain stories from QTBIPOC, can slip fairly quickly into erasure. So here is a reminder: colonial powers benefit when we only focus on individuals and erase the long complex queer histories of cultures that have been colonized. Cultures and communities that have been colonized deserve space in our discussions of queer history.
Maybe next time you hear someone boil down queer BIPOC's impact on the queer culture to the same short list of names, maybe question that. Challenge yourself to learn about lesser known stories, and even try to open yourself up to learning about cultural histories of queerness rather than just reading stories that are individual based.

HR 9495 is going back up for voting. All non-profit orgs are in danger.
The Committee on Rules is meeting at 1600 EST on 18 Nov 2024. The agenda includes HR 9495.
If this bill passes, the Secretary of the Treasury would have the power to strip any non-profit group of it's tax-exempt status with no due process.
If you are part of the fandom community and you are in America, please contact your reps and ask them to vote NO on HR 9495.

The only update for Falastin’s campaign today is that the children are starving. That’s it. If you want more details on their suffering you can see her blog HERE or read one of the gfm updates.
Last week her family received 52% less donations than in a week prior, and for this week the trend seems to continue. 161$ today, 180$ yesterday, 52$ on Monday. They haven’t met the goal of 500$ per day (which is really NOT enough to feed 26 people in Gaza but was meant to be a start) in 13 days.
I repeat again, this is for 26 people. And they still need tents and clothes (see this post from September of what they have to live with), but since they didn’t receive enough support to buy them they spend whatever they have right now on food. And, again, donations are slowing down and they cannot even afford food with them anymore.
That doesn’t mean that you should not help by the way, quite the contrary. Even 10 SEK or 1 USD will at least push the fundraiser up in the search results and that can attract people outside of Tumblr. And if you need an extra incentive there is another round of a raffle for Palestinian thob: LINK
Donate via Gofundme (in SEK! check rates below please): LINK
10$ = 110 SEK
25$ = 274 SEK
50$ = 549 SEK
100$ = 1,099 SEK
Donate via PayPal (in USD): LINK

The demonization of actual charities/orgs in favor of individual GFMs has done nothing but stripped marginalized people of their privacy + dignity by forcing them to become internet celebrities in order to get their needs met as opposed to an org that could privately help them if said org had the funding!!!! Also it’s why people feel the need to go as far as to fake their own kidnappings just to get traction! Not to mention it’s just made the lives of grifters so much easier

Say it with me. No animal is capable of evil because the concept of 'evil' is based on human-made standards of morality and thus it is ridiculous to expect an animal to adhere to them or to look down upon it for not doing so. Okay thanks
