Strange, isn’t it? How our dreams can take flight in an instant? For Mitsuyo it all began on a warm spring day in a park in Kyoto. It was meant to be a afternoon, where she would see a dance performance by the geiko of Kyoto’s Miyajima-chou hanamachi. Mesmerized by the grace of the women on the stage, it was not enough to admire them, the young Mitsuyo felt the need to become one of them. It was in that moment that she decided it would be her destiny to become a geiko. Luckily, Mitsuyo’s grandmother had a friend who was once a geiko in Miyajima-cho herself. It was this family friend who put in a word for Miyo at the Hanai okiya. Not long after, Miyo left her family home in Ōtsu to start her journey as an apprentice in one of Kyoto’s six geisha districts.
