Harry Pennell, RIP
Tumblr media
May 31st is the 100th anniversary of the Battle of Jutland, in which Commander Harry Pennell lost his life in the sinking of the HMS Queen Mary, so it seems a good opportunity to introduce you to one of the overlooked members of the expedition …
In 1910, when he joined the crew of the Terra Nova, Pennell was a naval lieutenant. While his career was in military sailing, he had a keen interest in things scientific, and did a lot of work helping the scientists on the way to Antarctica and on the Terra Nova’s cruises around the Ross Sea. And when I say a lot, I mean A LOT – everyone’s recollections of Pennell express awe at what a prodigious worker he was; even Bill conceded that Pennell outdid him, and Bill only got five hours of sleep a night.  Pennell and Campbell (first mate) seem to have been the Good Cop/Bad Cop of the Terra Nova: aside from his diligence, Pennell “was father and mother to every man on board his ship. He knew all their troubles, smoothed over many a difficulty, helped them not to get drunk.” (1)  Birdie described him to his family thus:
Pennell is the most indefatigable instructor.  He never gets fed up and is always ready to give up his own time to teach anybody.  He is only 18 months older than I am, and when I think of all he has in his brain I begin to wonder if I know anything at all.  His accuracy is extraordinary.  He never makes a statement or puts down anything that is not correct. Rather than say anything at random he will profess ignorance.  Yet he is no prig and does not mind doing hard work with his hands either … (2)
There were several losses of Terra Nova men in WWI, but it was Pennell’s that seems to have affected the company the most.  By 1916 Cherry had been invalided home from France and was beginning to assemble what would become The Worst Journey in the World; in an early draft he had this tribute to his friend:
In Pennell’s heaven they will work thirty hours in the day … He will perhaps keep the Celestial Log Book, and the record of the animals sighted … And every now and then he would ask for leave to go and take some of his friends in Hell out for dinner.  I hope he will ask me. (3)

The officers of the Terra Nova.  I’m not exactly sure which one Pennell is, but I think he may be standing roughly centre with the tall black cap and the smile.

VISITNG LECTURER : MATTHEW MERRICK
Matthew Merrick started off his lecture in a really weird way. He was beating on his chest to match up with a video of him, beating his chest to the rhythm of a heartbeat. He slowly got us all to join in and it went on for about two or so minutes. I thought it was unusual to say the least.
He described himself as “not one of those artists that stands in front of you and says ‘this is a painting’ or ‘this is a sculpture’ whilst flicking through a powerpoint” From that moment, I knew I’d like him. He explained that he didn’t use a studio as he preferred to use more unconventional spaces, such as his train ride to work, to create his art. I thought that was very interesting as I’d never considered not having a studio before. In the breaks that I’ve had between college or uni where I haven’t had access to a studio, I’ve just not done as much art and accepted that that was how it was. By using his train rides to and from work, Merrick gets about ten hours of ‘studio time’ a week. I think I will also use this, as I visit my friends in Manchester often.
He told us about his past and his lack of a need for a studio as he realised he would just go to his studio and listen to podcasts or sit on his laptop to create video art etc. He had an epiphany that he could just be doing these things at home, for free, or whilst he was on the train or travelling. The piece he bagan the lecture with, “Badum Badum” was a direct response to sitting on the trains.
I was inspired by Merrick’s stories of his previous artistic endeavors as well as his plans for further projects. They were both very interesting and very funny.
Overall, I thoroughly enjoyed Merrick’s lecture, and even spoke to him one-on-one about my plans to become an art teacher. He was very encouraging and I hope to meet him again in the future.
