Wally Darling was a simple man.

He liked simple things.

He liked the way the sun rose at the same time every morning, its light filtering through the curtains of his little home. He liked how the floorboards creaked under his small feet, how the smell of fresh bread from Poppy’s kitchen sometimes drifted through his open window.

He liked patterns. Order. Things that made sense.

And yet, every day was a little different.

Today, for example, felt just slightly different from yesterday.

Wally sat up in bed, blinking slowly. The world was quiet. Peaceful.

He liked that.

The first thing he did, as always, was greet his best friend.

“Good morning, Home”

Home responded by opening the door and then closing it again.

Wally then looked at his nightstand.

“Good morning, apple.”

He looked at the shiny red apple sitting on his nightstand. It did not respond. That was okay. He understood. Sometimes he didn’t feel like talking either.

After getting dressed, Wally left his house and stepped outside. The morning air was crisp, cool against his face. He liked the way it felt.

Barnaby was already awake, lounging under his usual tree. Wally approached him quietly.

Barnaby’s ears twitched, and he cracked one eye open. “Mornin’, little buddy.”

“Good morning, Barnaby.”

Wally stared at him for a moment. Then, slowly, he reached out and touched one of Barnaby’s floppy ears.

Soft.

Barnaby chuckled. “Enjoyin’ yourself?”

Wally nodded. “Your doggy ears are very soft.”

Barnaby smirked. “Thanks, pal. Took me years to grow ‘em.”

Wally thought about that. “I think they’ve always been there.”

Barnaby grinned. “Ya got me.”

Wally hummed, still gently patting the ear.

It was a good morning.

Later, he found Rommy.

She was standing outside her home, humming a little tune to herself.

Wally watched her for a moment. She hadn’t noticed him yet. Her hair was slightly messy from the wind, and she looked warm in the morning sunlight.

She smelled like cotton candy.

Wally liked cotton candy.

Maybe that’s why he liked standing close to her.

Rommy turned and finally noticed him. Her face lit up. “Oh! Wally! Good morning!”

Wally blinked. “Good morning, Rommy.”

She rocked on her heels, smiling. “What’s up?”

Wally considered the question. He didn’t have an answer. He had just wanted to see her.

“…Nothing.”

Rommy giggled. “You’re silly.”

Wally didn’t think he was silly. But Rommy liked to laugh, so maybe that was okay.

She smelled like cotton candy. He thought about telling her that.

Maybe another time.

By afternoon, Wally found himself helping Eddie organize some letters.

Eddie was very fast. He talked fast, he worked fast, he thought fast. Wally was slower. That was okay. Eddie never seemed to mind.

As Wally stacked some envelopes, Eddie looked over. “You’re really focused today, huh?”

Wally blinked. “Am I?”

“Yeah, you’ve been real quiet.”

Wally considered that. “I am always quiet.”

Eddie laughed. “Yeah, I guess so.”

Wally tilted his head. “Do you not like when I am quiet?”

Eddie gave him a puzzled look. “What? No, you’re fine.”

Wally nodded. “Good.”

Eddie was a good friend.

The letters were soft, but not as soft as Barnaby’s doggy ears.

As the day went on, Wally sat in the grass and watched clouds move across the sky. They were big and slow, like thoughts drifting in and out of his head.

He wondered if Rommy ever thought about clouds.

He wondered if Barnaby’s ears would get fluffier in the winter.

He wondered if Eddie had finished his deliveries.

He wondered why his heart beat differently when Rommy smiled.

Wally sighed.

So many thoughts.

Maybe tomorrow, he would have fewer thoughts.

But for now, he was content.

The sun was warm. The breeze was soft. The world was simple.

And Wally liked simple things.

The grass felt nice.

Wally had been lying on it for a while now, watching the clouds move. They were big and fluffy, shifting into different shapes.

One looked like a heart.

That made him think of Rommy.

He blinked slowly.

Rommy had been on his mind a lot lately.

Wally wasn’t sure why, but whenever he thought of her, he felt… different. Warm. Like standing too close to a lamp but not wanting to step away.

He wondered if she ever thought about him, too.

Maybe she did.

Maybe right now, Rommy was sitting somewhere, thinking, "I wonder what Wally is doing."

That was a nice thought.

Eventually, Wally sat up.

The sun had moved across the sky, meaning time had passed. That was how time worked.

He dusted himself off and decided to walk. He liked walking. It was simple. One foot in front of the other, steady and slow.

As he wandered, he saw Julie balancing on a fence.

She waved. “Hey, Wally!”

“Hello, Julie.”

She grinned. “What are you up to?”

Wally thought about it.

“Walking.”

Julie giggled. “Well, you sure are good at it!”

Wally blinked. “Thank you.”

She jumped off the fence, landing gracefully. “Wanna play a game?”

Wally tilted his head. “What kind of game?”

Julie tapped her chin. “A running game!”

Wally blinked again. “…I think I would lose.”

Julie gasped dramatically. “You don’t know that!”

Wally nodded. “I do.”

She pouted, then smiled. “Okay, okay, how about tag?”

Wally considered it. “I don’t think I would win that either.”

Julie laughed. “You’re funny, Wally.”

Was he?

He didn’t think he was. But Julie was smiling, so maybe that was okay.

After parting ways with Julie, Wally continued walking.

He found himself near Poppy's house, where she was carefully setting out fresh loaves of bread on the open window to cool. The air smelled warm, like flour and sugar.

Wally liked that smell.

Poppy noticed him and flinched slightly. “O-Oh! Hello, Wally dear.”

“Hello, Poppy.”

She nervously wrung her hands. “Did you… need something?”

Wally stared at the bread.

“I like the smell.”

Poppy blinked. “Oh! Um, t-thank you.”

Wally nodded. He continued staring.

Poppy shuffled nervously. “Would… would you like some?”

Wally nodded again.

Poppy quickly grabbed a small loaf and placed it in a paper bag. “Here you go, dear.”

Wally took it.

It was warm.

“I like warm things.”

Poppy let out a relieved chuckle. “I-I’m glad.”

Wally continued standing there.

“…W-Would you like butter with that?”

Wally thought about it.

Butter was soft.

Barnaby’s ears were also soft.

He liked soft things.

“Yes.”

Poppy quickly handed him some butter.

Wally nodded in thanks before walking away, he blinked and slowly ate the bread.

It was warm and soft.

A good bread.

A good day.

At some point, Wally found himself near Rommy’s house again.

He hadn’t planned to be here, but somehow, his feet had brought him back.

Rommy was outside again, this time sitting on her porch, hugging a pillow.

She looked sleepy.

Wally approached her.

“Rommy.”

She looked up, blinking in surprise before smiling. “Oh! Hey, Wally.”

“You are holding a pillow.”

Rommy laughed. “Yeah. It’s comfy.”

Wally tilted his head. “Are you tired?”

Rommy hummed. “A little. Just felt like hugging something soft.”

Soft.

Like Barnaby’s ears.

Like butter.

Like—

Wally thought for a moment.

“…You can hug me.”

Rommy’s eyes widened.

Then, she laughed. “Aww, Wally! That’s sweet.”

Wally blinked. “Is it?”

She giggled. “Yeah. You’re really cute sometimes.”

His heart did something weird.

Not bad weird. Just… weird.

Maybe it was the bread.

Rommy patted the space next to her. “Wanna sit with me?”

Wally nodded and sat down.

She leaned in and wrapped her arms around him.

His body went limp, his arms hanging by his sides. He didn't really know how to hug.

Rommy didn't mind. She held him gently, her embrace warm and comforting. She was used to his stillness, to his way of being. She just held him, and that was enough.

Wally felt her warmth, her heartbeat steady against his chest. He didn't need to move, didn't need to do anything. He just let himself be held, feeling safe and content.

Rommy smelled like cotton candy again.

He liked cotton candy.

He liked Rommy.

He liked today.

Yes.

Today was a good day.

Rommy Dolly wasn’t a tech genius. But when her hopeless romantic heart was on the line, nothing—not even her lack of computer skills—was going to stop her from hacking the neighborhood system.

The plan was simple: hack Welcome Home’s group chat that connected all the neighbors for daily updates, events, and Howdy’s never-ending “SALE! SALE! SALE!” announcements. It wasn’t just a chat—it was their virtual town square. Rommy was going to take over the whole thing and transform it into a personal message board to woo Wally Darling.

“I just need some privacy,” Rommy muttered to herself, typing furiously on her laptop, which was balanced precariously on an uneven stack of romance novels. “No distractions, no Sally screaming about artistic integrity, and definitely no Howdy spamming me with deals.”

Step 1: Access the System

Rommy started with an intense Google search: "How to hack a system if you have no idea what you're doing."

Click. Click. Click. She skimmed articles, ignoring the ones that seemed illegal (most of them). After hours of research and about twelve “Are you a robot?” CAPTCHA tests, she had gathered enough random knowledge to cobble together her master plan.

Her fingers flew across the keyboard—mostly copying and pasting random codes she found online. To her shock and amazement, it worked. The system opened up before her like the gates of heaven.

“Ha!” she cackled, throwing her arms into the air. “They said I couldn’t do it! They said I was just a lovesick romantic who cries at rom-coms! But look at me now! I AM A TECH GODDESS!”

Step 2: Rename the Group Chat

The first thing she did was change the name of the group chat from friendly gossip to Rommy & Wally’s Love Nest.

The system immediately notified all the neighbors of the change.

Julie: Aww, that’s so cute! Wait… why does this feel suspicious?

Eddie: ROMMY, IS THIS YOU?!

Rommy: Mind your business, bestie.

Step 3: Kick Out the Nosy Neighbors

With a few clicks, Rommy began her purge.

Rommy: sorry bestie! Nothing personal! Now shoo-shoo ♡

(Rommy kicks eddie out of the chat)

Howdy: Wait, what? Where did Eddie go?

Rommy: Oh, don’t worry about him, Howdy. You’re next!

Howdy: Next?! But where will I promote my sales?! The group chat is vital to my business!

Rommy: Somewhere else, lovebug.

Howdy: DON’T YOU LOVEBUG ME, ROMMY!

(Rommy kicks Howdy out of the chat)

Sally: Rommy, are you serious right now?! You can’t just hijack the group chat!

Rommy: I absolutely can, sally.

Sally: This is chaos! This is anarchy! You’re stealing my audience! I can’t let this happen!

Rommy: Bye, Sally!

(Rommy kicks sally out of the chat)

Julie: Rommy, sweetie, don’t you think you’re going a little overboard?

Rommy: Julie, sweetie, don’t you think you’re a little too nosy?

Julie: I just think this isn’t very fair!

Rommy: Life isn’t fair, Julie.

(Rommy kicks julie out of the chat)

Barnaby: Rommy’s gone rogue! But I'm very interested in what will happen next

Rommy: Oh, Barnaby, you’re too funny for your own good.

Barnaby: Aw, thanks, doll.

(Rommy kicks barnaby out of the chat)

Frank: Stop this madness at once. This is highly inappropriate!

Rommy: Frank, Frank, Frank… Always so serious. You don’t understand the power of love.

Frank: I don’t care about the power of love!

(Rommy kicks frank out of the group chat)

Poppy: Oh, dear… Am I next?

Rommy: Poppy, you’re a sweetheart. I almost feel bad about this.

Poppy: Oh, thank you! That’s so kind of you

(Rommy kicks poppy out of the group chat)

Wally: Hey, I'm back online. What did I miss? 😁

Rommy: Oh, it’s just a VIP zone now. Only you and me, Wally.

Wally: Oh! That sounds fun! But what happened to everyone? Are they okay?

Rommy: They’re fine, don’t worry about them. I just figured we could use some alone time. You know, to talk… just the two of us.

Wally: Alone time sounds nice! We can talk about anything! What do you want to talk about?

Rommy: Oh, I could talk about you for hours, Wally. You are so fascinating. We could talk about the stuff we like!

Eddie: Rommy has lost her mind!

Julie: She kicked all of us!

Howdy: She even called me lovebug! THE NERVE.

Frank: I’m creating a plan to take back the group.

Barnaby: I say we let her have it. This is hilarious.

Sally: NO, THIS IS AN ACT OF WAR.

Poppy: Oh dear, what should we do?

Rommy sighed, staring at the screen. Her plan was coming along. Sort of. She had gotten some nice, flirty moments in, but Wally still seemed to be in his sweet, oblivious bubble. No mention of romance, no hint that he might feel the same way.

Before she could dive deeper into her thoughts, there was a ping.

Rommy: Oh... um, hey, Frank.

Frank: I’ve fixed it. You kicked everyone out! And now you’ve got some crazy chats going on about... you and Wally?

Rommy: It wasn’t like that! It’s just a little... fun. Everyone was talking over us, and I wanted some alone time to bond with Wally.

Frank: Fun? This is a mess, Rommy. You’re lucky I can fix this. Everyone's back in now, alright?

Frank didn’t waste another moment, his fast fingers typing away and returning the neighbors to the chat with a few quick clicks. One by one, the familiar faces popped back into the group chat

Rommy stared at the screen, watching as everyone flooded back in with their usual chaos. But through it all, Rommy’s gaze drifted to Wally’s name. She had been so focused on getting closer to him, pulling all these tricks and stunts, that she hadn’t considered what it really meant. The truth was, maybe Wally didn’t need to see all these bold moves

She had pushed too hard, trying to force something that wasn’t ready. But that didn’t mean it couldn’t happen. Rommy let out a long breath. There was no rush. She wasn’t going to give up on Wally, but she wasn’t going to manipulate her way into his heart. If it was going to happen, it had to be natural.

I like the joke in the fandom that Wally would regularly steal apples from Howdy. But what if, instead of Wally, Julie was the one stealing them instead?

I think it fits Julie’s personality better. She’d sneak into Howdy’s bodega and try to swipe an apple without him noticing.

It’s not that she genuinely wants to steal or eat the apples; she just enjoys playing around with Howdy. If she does manage to swipe something, she’d return it later while giggling.
