Vain-Chapter 5
May 2013
“Ok.” I thought to myself. “Deep breaths. He’s just a guy like any other guy.”
He just happens to be the guy I’ve had a crush on since college. No worries. Nope. None at all.
My boss, Aaron, was walking down the hall to the large conference room with Shannon, Tomo, and Jared.
The entourage took seats around a large oval table while I sat at my laptop taking “notes”. Really I was messaging my bestie trying to keep my hands from shaking.
The meeting was fairly short, working out the logistics of distribution, the finalizing of packaging and...
“Well what do you think?” Jared asked of me making me jump a little.
“Um.” Fake it. “I agree” I said unsure of what I was agreeing to.
“Then that settles it. We’ll go with the painting insert.” He said with a knowing smile.
After the meeting, I shut my laptop and tried to sneak out quickly, but was caught in the doorway.
“You had no idea what I said did you?”
Damn it.
“Of course I did.”
“Uh huh” he smirked.

August 2015
“So you’ll be accompanying Mr. Leto to the interviews as Ms Ludbrook will be unavailable.”
I replied to the email from my boss as professionally as possible while my inner fangirl had a conniption fit.
I had my instructions to pack and then wait for an Uber that would be sent to my apartment.
I’d gotten the text that my driver had arrived. I expected a little Prius with a fresh faced college guy trying to get enough money to buy that one text book he swore the professor wouldn’t even use.
But to my surprise I was greeted by a large black SUV with a middle aged guy who looked like he did this just for kicks.
Nice job springing for the UberX Mr. Leto.
We pulled up to a stucco wall, with a large gate that opened, after a quick phone call, to reveal a modern home with glass, and steel accents.
I had just enough time to settle myself before the driver opened my door.
Jared was already waiting for me.
“Hi there”
Was he always this eager?
“Hi”
“I’ve already got some things I need you for”
“Oh ok. Sure”
He took me on a small tour of the downstairs area and lead me to the living room where Shannon and Tomo had gathered.
The coffee table was littered with comp cards of young women.
Mostly blond. All between the ages of 18-24. All at least 5’9”. And all stunning.
“So these are the models we’re considering for the shoot next week. I’d like your help choosing the best ones.”
Great. There’s nothing I enjoy more than silently comparing myself to gorgeous models, while listening to the man of my dreams gush over them.
“Sure!”
Shannon looked at me as if I were nuts to be enthusiastic about it, but what I could I do.
——————————————————————-
“Look.” Jared said obviously more frustrated. “I’m not going to settle for less than what I want.”
We’d been at this for hours, Shannon and Tomo had narrowed it down to one but Jared was holding out for the girl he liked.
“We’ve worked with her before.” Tomo said calmly.
“And that’s exactly why I don’t wanna work with her now.”
“Fine.” Shannon gave in.
The two men left, while I sat still and watched as my inner fangirl crumbled in to a heap of disappointment. He was a perfectionist to a fault. He could be rude at times, and I half expected him to whine when he didn’t get his way.

Vain-Chapter 4
“So, who is it?” I asked coyly.
“Don’t worry about it.” Shannon replied. “I doubt she’s interested in the first place.”
Before we could continue, Shannon and I jumped at a four letter expletive that was shouted from Jared and bounced off the walls.
“Shan!”
He yelled again prompting Shannon to leave his precious breakfast, black coffee, and headed quickly to the bedroom office.
I followed behind, somehow knowing that my name would be shouted next.
Thankfully, it wasn’t but I was correct in my assumption.
“I need...”
I’m sure you’ve rehearsed this. Remember your lines Jared.
“A favor...”
And there it is.
“I need a date.” He continued. “Well, I guess it’s more like someone to keep me company and organized at an event”
“Ok...” I said grabbing my phone going through my contacts.
“Normally... Emma does this kinda thing and since...”
What...
“Umm. So since I’m filling in...”
“Look if you can’t then...”
“No no no. I can... When is it?”
“Friday...” he said sheepishly.
It was Wednesday. This would give me just enough time find an outfit, and pray that rumors weren’t started about how he and I were together.
“Thanks.”
He sounded sincere, as if I really was doing him a favor. I got the impression that he’d been such an ass to so many people that it was rare that anyone other than Shannon or Emma would help him out.
“Anytime”
I meant it too.
Jared quickly got back to work, as Shannon motioned for me to follow him out in to the living room. He led me through the house and out to the pool area where he took a seat, and had me join him.
He looked somehow relieved and concerned all at once.
“You realize he was talking about you before.”
“Excuse me?”
“Seriously?” He questioned. “You know how boys in school will pick on a girl he likes because he’s not quite sure how deal with emotions yet?”
“Yeah...” Oh shit...
“I’m glad you’re doing this, but if you’re gonna let him down. Do it easy ok? He still beats himself up over the last time he wanted to ask you out.”
“What last time?” I asked.

Vain-Chapter 3
I finished up the last of my phone calls when my stomach began to rumble. I looked down at my phone and saw that lunch had long passed by and dinner time was setting in.
I’d made my way in to Jared’s office, which was really just an extra bedroom with a desk, an iMac and a bed.
“I’m gonna go get some dinner ok?”
“No need.” He replies without even looking at me. “I ordered in. Plus I need you to call the museum about the exhibit.”
“Exhibit?”
“Yeah. I’ve got it all planned out.”
He patted a spot on the bed next to him, and I took my cue to have a seat. He showed me a notebook with scribbles and words like, “sex show”, “trump tank” and “love/hate wall”.
I listened to his ideas and was actually quite impressed at the lengths he was going to for the promotion. As much of an ass as he could be, he was a brilliant ass nonetheless.
“Food’s here!”
Shannon’s voice boomed through the house, and brought me the opportunity for escape.
——————————————————————
We dined on locally sourced vegan fare, because well... it’s what he ordered. And who were we to question it. Jared began to scribble in his notebook again at the table. More ideas. More projects for me to do dirty work for.
“Do you ever stop for a second?” I asked.
“Listen.” He said sternly. “This is five years of my life. Five years of work. Five years of trying to tweak and perfect every nuance of this album. So no, I’m not gonna take a break.”
“Jared!” Shannon broke in admonishing his brother. “Knock it off.”
“What? I’m sorry she doesn’t get it.”
“No one gets your process. But don’t be a dick to people who are trying to help you.”
Suddenly I wasn’t hungry anymore. It was late now and I was done. I stood from the table and went to grab my things.
“Where are you going?”
I heard Jared get up from the table behind me. I turned to face him, annoyed and angry.
“Home.”
“Stay.” He swallowed hard as if he had to rehearse how to say these next words perfectly. “Please. I’m—I’m sorry.”
Did Mr. Ego just apologize for being a prick? I think he did. Let’s find out.
“Sorry?” I questioned.
“Yes. I’m sorry.”
Ok. At least the guy was trying. And having learned my lesson from the last album, I packed an overnight bag.
I stayed. Midnight turned in to two a.m., and the last thing I remember was lying down in the office bed with Jared at the computer emailing god knows who.
I woke up to the sounds of shuffling papers expecting to see Jared still at work. But to my surprise, Shannon was rummaging through notes looking like a kid who just woke up their parent a little too early.
“Shit. I’m sorry. Go back to sleep.” He said quietly.
“No. It’s ok.” I said snuggling the soft blanket that magically appeared during the night. “Thanks for this by the way.”
“Umm. Actually. That was Jared, not me.”
“Really?”
He must’ve needed quite the favor to be that nice, and I had a feeling I was going to find out what it was soon enough.
Shannon found what he was looking for and left me to get a quick shower and change clothes. I followed the scent of coffee and pancakes to the kitchen where I caught the last of conversation I wasn’t meant to hear.
“You do this every time Jay.”
“Bullshit.”
“If you like her, ask her out. Nicely. Like a real person.”
“Why? So I can get rejected because I fucked up with her the first time?”
“Well you’re fucking up with her now!”
I tried my best to make my presence known, stepping a little harder than necessary. I didn’t want them to know I was eavesdropping.
“Oh. Hey.” Shannon said quickly.
Jared turned and walked away without speaking as Shannon rolled his eyes.
“What’s that all about?” I asked quietly.
“You heard all that?”
“Heard what?” I lied
The look he gave me was one of calling me out, and knowing that I heard every word. Jared had a crush, and apparently he wasn’t very good at showing it.
Poor girl.

Vain-Chapter 2
I dressed fairly casually. Messy bun, skinny jeans, and a tank top with long cardigan. I wasn’t trying to impress anyone and this was all work thank you very much.
I’d sat down in the back of a black sedan with deeply tinted windows which I was grateful for. There had been no time for coffee, as Jared was already calling asking me to “post a few tweets”. I feigned my excitement in less than 140 characters and added an emoji or two to seal the deal.
Once the car had stopped in front Jared’s house, my stomach knotted itself as I stepped out and walked to the front door. It was swung open by the shaggy bearded man himself.
“You made it!” He exclaimed. “I’ve got lots of things for us to get to and need you to go ahead and get started on...”
“Jay. She’s not even in the front door yet. Chill out”
My saving grace. The older Leto, Shannon, cut off the babbling and welcomed me in.
“Good to see you again gorgeous.”
“You too, Shan” I replied with a smile.
“Here. You’re gonna need this.”
He handed me a warm mug filled with deep rich coffee. His own blend I’m sure.
“I could kiss you Shannon Leto.”
Who wouldn’t really. Hot guy gives you a warm cup of coffee early in the morning before sending you to the wolves. Anyone would be a little smitten.
He smirked and went about his day as Jared began to shout.
“Guys! We have a lot to do today. Can we please get a move on?”
——————————————————————
I sat in the chair across from Jared, who had already made a list of the many different talk shows he’d like to appear on.
“So did you wanna do The Late Late Show or...”
He gave me look as if to say that I was ridiculous for even asking.
“No.”
“That’s it. Just no.” I replied sipping the last of my coffee.
“I’m don’t feel like singing in a car to pop drivel. So. No.”
I rolled my eyes hoping he wouldn’t catch it.
“What was that for?”
Oops.
“Nothing. I just think...it’d be good to promote your ability”
Good job. Stroke his ego.
“Thank you. But no”
I stood up from my seat with my list of producers and show runners to call.
“Don’t take too long on that list. I need you back here soon.”
I didn’t respond as I walked past Shannon and Tomo looking obviously frustrated. I heard Tomo patting the Shan on the back as he turned around to follow.
“Hey.” He said walking behind me. “You ok so far?”
“Yeah. But your brother is jackass.”
He smirked.
“All I’ve done all day is listen to the little nuances of the new songs. Which, don’t get me wrong are fucking amazing. But I can’t hear the same line sung over and over and act as if it’s the first time I’ve heard it.”
“Try going through over a hundred takes on one song just because.”
He took the list from my hand.
“He’s hard to deal with I know. But deep down he’s an awesome person. Even kind sometimes.”
“How far down? Like are we talking just past the surface or am I going to need a lantern and a pick axe?”
He laughed quietly, and studied my list.
“You take the bottom half and I’ll take the top ok?”
“Deal.”

Vain-Chapter 1
The heaviness of my bag seemed to increase the longer I fumbled with my keys to the front door of my house.
My house. It still seemed weird to say that.
I’d moved to Los Angeles directly after college, having taken a job as a receptionist and praying to god that my Craigslist roommate wasn’t a complete creeper.
Here I am a few years later, working in middle management at a record company. No more Craigslist roommate. Just a lazy black cat that wants nothing to do with anyone or anything unless treats are involved.
He meowed at me as I plopped my things down on the counter. Apparently I’d missed his feeding time once again.
-The Boss-
My phone began to ring. Somehow he had this disturbing way of knowing when I just walked in the door.
“Yes Aaron?”
“I didn’t catch you at a bad time did I?”
Yes. Of course you did.
“No. Of course not”
“Good. You know our client has an album release in the morning.”
“Yes. I’ve already talked to...”
“Listen.” He cut me off. “Emma has come down with the flu and I need you...”
“Absolutely not.”
“Please. There is literally no one else that can do this.”
I couldn’t stand him. Every smug egotistical ounce of that man made my flesh crawl, and now I had to spend the next few days of my life practically kissing his ass. I’d dealt with Jared before on the last album promotions, and quite frankly my six year old nephew was better at keeping in his frustrations.
“You owe me”
I didn’t let him finish the next sentence before I ended the call.
——————————————————————
I snuggled in to the bliss that was my bed, when my sleep was shattered by the shrill ring of my phone.
“Hello...” I grumbled.
“Rise and shine. We’ve got an album to promote. I’ve got a car coming for you in twenty minutes.”
Before I could respond to him, Jared had already hung up the phone. A taste of my own medicine I suppose.
* you gave him my number?!?!
* 😕 sorry
There wasn’t much time to argue over text messages. I had to get dressed, and pray that there was coffee involved somewhere in this journey.
