My short doc 'Over The Garden Fence' is finally out online, please give it a little watch if you want : ) . The observational short doc tells the story of a community garden In the suburbs of Greater Manchester. A narrow path between two houses leads to a secret garden, hidden away from the noisy hustle and bustle of the city. It is a beautiful green sanctuary and is home to many species of plants and wildlife. Lovingly cared for by a group of locals whose love for nature and dedication to caring for their little sanctuary brought them closer together.

Film diary #5
The Recorder Exam (리코더 시험, Rikodeo siheom)
2011. Kim Bora
This short film explores the inner life of a child whos preparing for a recorder exam at school, yet also facing challenges at home. The themes revolve around the struggles of the little girl whos having to navigate her way through the difficulties of school, her family, money and relationship problems. Such heavy topics are contrasted by the gentle style and cinematography of the film, with soft colours
The character development of the main character can be seen as she goes from being a quiet and obedient little girl whos trying her best to keep the peace and navigate the complex relationships around her, to having emotional outbursts as she hides in the closet, as well as causing noise at night by practicing her recorder loudly, this decision in writing her character leaves a powerful impression on the viewer. I loved this film, its a gentle watch thats full of meaningful and real topics, but full of hope and light.

Film diary #4
Katatsumori
1994 / Naomi Kawase
A short personal documentary by the Japanese filmmaker Naomi Kawase, documenting her grandmother's daily life, and their intimate relationship. Naomi follows her grandmother around as she spends her days gardening and doing things around the house. Through the shooting style we get to see the relationship between filmmaker and the subject of the film.
This film was an emotional watch for me, and I believe it could touch anyone's heart, what seems like a mundane film about the simple daily life of an old woman and her granddaughter, speaks volumes in the spaces in between.
Although the film is intended to be observational and doesn't have a specific story line, i felt that for this reason it was a little bit difficult to get hooked in at the start, some sections felt like they dragged on for a little too long, but then suddenly in the middle of the film when the grandmother says “Naomi, do you love me like i love you?” i felt suddenly like a wall has lifted between me as the viewer and the subject of the film, i felt a huge connection to the character that wasn't there as much in the beginning, which could have been an intentional choice by the filmmaker, as if saying “you should stick around because you never know ”
