"antonin -" there is something to be hated about full names in hushed tones - thirty something years politicking under the wing of anton karkaroff has taught her that much. that, and to never bristle with a camera nearby. kaela is pointy by nature - from her gaze to her features all the way down to her personality but she does well, somehow, to mostly soften those things when the time is right. "niko is hard to pin down on a good day, which you know," she stares ( eyes ever so narrowed ) at her father for a long moment as if to really unpack this offer of hospitality - she knows the game of say one thing, mean another well ( or, at base level, he's telling his daughter not to be an idiot, which is a life lesson of his she never really gets to forget ). "we're just going to do a couple loops of the camp grounds - i'd imagine not long enough to give you any lasting worry lines." a hint of a smile is offered - to onlookers, this conversation is light. "do i have to ask in my old age if that's alright?"

to this use of his own name, antonin's lips twitch. she tests the boundary, exerts control ; mikaela, having learnt at his knee, has mastered these small powerplays that her brother never has. if he were here in her place... well, he's seen the bite marks. he and mikaela share a bond. or at least, their likenesses imply that they do and if there's any truth to be found beneath all that then they should be capable of reaching an understanding. "yes, i do, but you and i both know that today is a remarkably bad day for him to go missing. that's why i expect you to keep an eye out for him." and here she is, again : her brothers keeper. he knows his shortcomings. he knows who nikolai will gravitate towards in the time he has, and it isn't him. mikaela's casting in this role is to be expected, but antonin trusts that she can handle it just fine in the same way that he trusts her to read between the lines. she's more than capable. he straightens his back, smiles wide for the sake of their audience, keeps his voice low so they continue unawares : "of course you don't. you're young - you should go and enjoy yourself, as much as possible. all i ask is that you think of your old and weary parents and try not to get in too late. and if you do see your brother, make sure he knows where to go. that's all."

"mikaela-" he murmurs beneath his breath, grip tightening on her arm the moment that it becomes clear that she moves with the intent of leaving. he lets eulalia step away from him, other arm unwrapped from her waist, but in the same motion gives the universal gesture for a second, please to the sea of photographers that descended after the snitch was caught in hand - one finger held up high to see, an apologetic sort of smile twisting at his features. a camera flash betrays one of the slower to react, the picture snapped sure to appear in tomorrow's broadsheet, but antonin ignores this in favor of pivoting them both away from the prying eyes of those media vultures and pulling her fully aside. "we have a private home booked near dublin for the night. there's room enough for you and your brother, if you can find him," his gaze, steady to now, flickers towards her waiting guests, "i would like not to see you and your... new friends faces in the tabloids, tomorrow morning. it would be a pity to see all the good work we've done here, today, undone with a scandal."

KARKAROFF is the surname of a wealthy pure blood wixen family with russian origins, notably snubbed by the author of the pure blood directory ( largely believed to have been cantankerous nott ) in spite of documented relations to a handful of the families listed within it, including the selwyns. antonin ilyich karkaroff, the current head of the family, is well noted for his political aspirations, and has done much to separate himself from the shadow cast over the family in the wake of the first wixen war, due in large to the actions of one igor karkaroff.

the previous headmaster of durmstrang institute, now deceased, was a death eater who served under lord voldemort at the height of the first war. following his capture by alastor moody ( and an impressively short imprisonment in azkaban ), igor became one of the first of the dark lord’s followers to turn in several of his fellow death eaters - including barty crouch jr, the child of bartemius crouch sr - in exchange for an official pardon from the wizengamot. this cowardly act allowed him several years of relative success overseas, but ultimately lead to his downfall. following voldemort’s return, he was hunted down & killed by his former comrades. 

much gossip exists in pure blood society, none more insidious than that which throws doubt over the parentage of the few true pure blood’s which exist in modern wixen society. nikolai pavel & mikaela arden - the twin children of antonin karkaroff and the heirs to the karkaroff name and fortune - have been the subject of such slander for as long as they have been in the public eye. the family has maintained their refusal to comment. 

karkaroff is a surname of uncertain origin, though ‘kark’ may come from the polish karac, meaning ‘punishment’, or perhaps be derived from the finnish verb ‘karata’, meaning to flee or escape.
