          jackie  really  couldn’t  put  up  an  act  for  much  longer  than  she  had  too  —  the  image  of  perfection  that  her  parents  worked  so  hard  to  build  up  managed  to  crumble  down  a  split  second  after  it  stopped  being  a  necessity  .  it’s  just  so  suffocating  to  be  that  way  ;  jc’s  always  been  a  laidback  person  .  being  here  right  now  with  levi  takes  her  back  to  the  days  where  she  could  just  be  herself  without  worrying  about  the  meeting  the  expectations  of  everyone  else  .  it  was  nice  .  nose  crinkles  up  as  he  voices  some  of  his  own  choice  adjectives  ,  head  tilting  to  the  side  .  “  how  about  none  of  the  above  ?  ”  she  hums  out  ,  playful  lilt  in  her  tone  .  he  is  handsome  .  clever  …  well  ,  that  was  a  different  story  .  leaning  forward  ,  a  hand  extends  to  rest  upon  his  chest  .  but  the  tender  act  is  gone  as  soon  as  it  came  ,  giving  him  a  shove  away  from  her  .  “  you’d  better  deflate  that  giant  ass  head  of  yours  or  you’ll  float  away  like  a  hot  air  balloon  .  ”  arms  crossed  over  her  torso  ,  giving  him  an  expectant  look  .  perhaps  it  was  unfair  of  her  to  hold  his  sudden  disappearance  against  him  .  in  that  way  (  and  only  that  way  )  ,  he  had  more  confidence  than  she  did  —  jc  couldn’t  imagine  leaving  behind  the  life  her  parents  had  set  up  for  her  .  “  it  was  a  dick  move  ,  yea  .  ”  short  laugh  accompanies  her  words  .  well  ,  at  least  he  can  admit  it  .  “  no  ,  i  can’t  .  it’s  just  not  in  the  cards  for  you  .  ”  shoulders  lift  in  a  shrug  ,  “  you  really  want  to  talk  about  school  ,  levi  ?  ”  eyebrows  raise  ,  “  you  were  gone  for  so  long  that  i  got  my  bachelor’s  degree  and  started  law  school  .  ”  a  part  of  her  had  always  thought  that  he’d  be  by  her  side  to  celebrate  her  success  ,  but  things  didn’t  always  work  out  the  way  you  thought  they  would  .  “  the  stories  i  have  are  probably  ten  times  more  boring  than  yours  .  ”  she  says  as  if  she  didn’t  just  have  the  entire  room  wrapped  around  her  finger  ,  hanging  on  her  every  last  word  .  “  what’d  you  do  while  you  were  being  mr.  worldwide  ,  huh  ?  please  tell  me  you  smashed  an  absolute  beaut  on  a  balcony  in  paris  .  or  ,  actually  ,  don’t  .  the  last  time  i  saw  you  ,  you  were  a  big  ,  giant  dweeb  .  i  don’t  need  that  cherub - like  image  of  you  tainted  in  my  mind  .  i  can’t  even  remember  you  having  a  girlfriend  in  high  school  ,  leevs  ,  but  maybe  i  just  didn’t  pay  attention  when  you  weren’t  stealing  me  away  to  protect  you  from  the  rest  of  the  hockey  team  .  ”

          besides being around his sister , and sometimes his mom - - - levi was never comfortable being home . in the time he’s been away , his visits have always been brief and not for long . they didn’t even really happen often unless he really had to come home or special occasions . he believed there wasn’t anything left for him in toronto anymore . not after he ended up being such a disappointment to his father . therefore it was a dick move because he didn’t take into account that jc was always there . that her presence in his life always made it bearable . levi didn’t need a lot , just maybe a partner in crime . jc was that person for him . actually if anything , she was always the hero in their stories and he was the goofy sidekick that wasn’t ever much help . that’s how the duo worked growing up . following their ‘duties’ , yet at the same time not caring enough about it together that they trampled over every obstacle together . “ oh come on , i know you like me . “ he annoyingly teases the idea again , pushing those buttons as if he’d never had left them unpushed in the first place . “ whoa there !  “ he calls out in defence . hand on her shoulder to lightly shove her back . “ i think my head is at the appropriate size . yours ? definitely needs to shrink . or if your head just this big for fancy parties . who are you trying to be all well behaved for now ?  the mayor ? “ levi asks playfully , but he wouldn’t be surprised if she came out looking like . . . that . . . for a purpose . he always saw her , sometimes thinking his mind was playing tricks when the light around her shone as something more - - - like it was doing now where he had to tell himself to knock it off . this was just jackie , the girl who’d punch him just for breathing and then laugh about it later . “ i have my reasons . “ he tells her with shoulders shrugged , but he doesn’t say more than that . sparing the details of how much of a disappointment he is . in a way knowing he just ended up the same disappointment to her as he is to everyone else . “ oh come on , two seconds . please ? “ hands clasped together in a praying motion , bottom lip jutted out in a pout as he begs , but he knew for the two seconds of the action he was giving that it’s just wishful thinking . his expression changes with news of her success , eyebrows raising in surprise but his smile wide in pride for her . “ that’s actually so sick , what do you mean ?! “ he knew of her goals , and that’s where she’d end up , but to actually hear she’s succeeding . truly , he was happy for her . “ so when i get into some legal trouble i can call you now , or soon . “ he plays the idea up in the air . “ i guess i owe you chocolate , and a few shots . “ that was the plan since they were kids , chocolate and alcohol for graduation . he could act as if he didn’t remember their promises and goals of going through it together . how they were supposed to go to the same university , suffer through the semesters together . levi remembered his life in uni for the year he went . how miserable he was and how jc seemed to have a better hand at it than he ever did . in comparison , he wasn’t good enough to stick around . “ okay , i’ve had girlfriends . it’s not my fault you didn’t like any of them to notice that i could ever get it . “ he tells her , referring to the times he really did have to defend his frienship with jc to those past girlfriends , and then his relationships . “ i’ve definitely had . . . a fair share of sexual encounters . if that’s all you’re really interested in . “ he says , rubbing his nose with his thumb . “ i was part of that hockey team and i still got beat up sometimes . can we talk about how the canadian school system definitely failed me ? “ he complains with a whine .

she’d  to  anything  to  erase  the  indignity  that  engulfed  her  upon  waking  up  alone  the  night  before  .  it  was  typical  ,  she  expected  too  much  ,  let  herself  feel  more  than  she  should’ve  and  now  ,  a  friend  that  she  had  grown  to  rely  on  was  about  to  slowly  fade  .  anguish  -  laced  thoughts  still  linger  on  her  mind  as  she  arrives  to  his  place  .  “  pancakes  ?  you’re  really  appealing  to  my  sweet  tooth  here  .  need  some  help  ?  ”  lingering  toward  the  kitchen  bench  ,  the  honeyed  aroma  floating  above  the  two  .  she’s  quiet  for  a  moment  ,  fighting  with  herself  as  to  whether  they  should  pick  apart  the  night  they  spent  together  ,  or  just  walk  away  from  it  .  strengthen  their  friendship  in  an  ignorant  bliss  ,  continue  their  lives  in  an  idle  denial  .  “  listen  ,  mason  .  .  .  ”  she  begins  ,  apprehensive  hues  struggle  to  make  eye  contact  with  him  ,  they  remain  locked  onto  the  floor  or  whatever  other  crevice  of  his  apartment  that  they  can  manage  with.  “  we  don’t  have  to  talk  about  last  night  if  you  don’t  want  to  . ”

the last thing he wanted was for her to fade away from his life . that their relationship would end up changing somehow . anyone else - - - with anyone else he’d let the idea of them flat out ignoring them , or himself even just not giving them a second look anymore be okay . with daphne it wasn’t . he grew to like her - - - a lot - - - a friend , maybe more ? his head couldn’t wrap around it . whatever it was he didn’t want it to be weird , and the fact that they had been together between the sheets the night before - - - it bothered hi since he didn’t want her to be one of those girls he played around with , because she isn’t . “ nah , i’ve just got to put em on the pan . do you like them fluffy ? “ he asks her , thanking himself for making the batter before she arrived , and it gave him the chance to break the brief eye contact he had with her to turn towards the stove to make them . “ i uh . . . “ he couldn’t quite figure out words in that moment . “ i just don’t want things to get weird . we technically still have to see each other and live in the same place . “

I really like fictional couples that actually enjoy spending time with each other. It seems like such a simple, mundane thing. But, often, I see fictional couples who are completely enamored and dramatic and willing to die for each other, which is fine. But like… do they enjoy hanging out? Do they have private jokes and would they be friends even if they weren’t in love? It feels like such a basic thing, but it’s something that I actually don’t see that often. And it feels so refreshing and honest compared to these over-dramatic romeo and juliet-esque romances. Just two people who become good friends and because they enjoy each other’s presence so much it grows into a strong attraction. It feels more real and tangible than two attractive people meeting and “falling in love at first sight” - like, of course, you fell in love at first sight! You’re both supermodels! Sorry, can’t relate.
