There's always a trio in a gang...

i reminisced about The Outsiders recently and realized how much Rem and Fox in the Warriors (musical version) reminded me of Johnny and Ponyboy.

Johnny mostly reflects Rembrandt, imo. They're both quiet and observant, and although they're not the youngest member of their gangs, they're often treated like it (it's a little complicated in Rem's case since previous versions of the Warriors story had Rem as the youngest, so I wasn't sure if Rem was more like Johnny or more like Ponyboy).

Fox is like Ponyboy in the sense that they are both the actual youngest member of the gang. They both feel like they have to earn the right to be amongst their gang and act older than they are. They are slightly more vulnerable, and try to hide it behind a (meek cute) attempt to look tough (see: Ponyboy's many smart retorts and Fox's banter with Ajax in 'A Track Fire and a Phone Call).

The big difference, of course, is that Johnny is the one who bites the bullet, and so does Fox. Rem and Ponyboy are left alive. But perhaps that connects to the sense that Rembrandt feels she shouldn't have made it through the night in the events of the Warriors' story, like how Ponyboy feels like Johnny and Dally should've made it too.

Ajax, Rem, and Fox were kind of a trio in the same sense that Dally, Johnny, and Ponyboy had going on. Two members don't make it out, one does. Each one was an inspiration to the other. The survivor might be left wondering why they made it home alive, but they made it nonetheless.

I can only imagine that Rem would be going through the similar motions as Ponyboy by the end of the Outsiders book.

not to be brash or anything but i wanna see more ppl talk about Rembrandt's connection with Fox. Like they're both the youngest gang members, they're both quiet, they both have niche interests, someone mentioned how they shared the motif 'Now every move that I make is a bid to survive, keep me alive / When you woke up today you didn't think you could die, neither did I'. Ppl only talk about Rem and Ajax even tho i think Rem interacted with Fox the most in the album than anyone else. I wish more discussions were around Rem's relation with baby Fox 🥺
