This is my final outcome for Visual language 2.

Comparing to the task i did in last semester, i did try to add more texture and effects on my work.

I enjoy doing this task, although drawing some parts makes me feels sad and depressed for a while, i just feels great for the outcome, I especially like the dancing part of the skulls, i added details on their mask to make them look different and i think the scene just fun to look at. 

I also like the scene the flying lantern being released, i also feel released after drawing that, feeling that the little girl (daughter) can finally put off her sadness. I feel like i just put myself into her shoe while i’m drawing it.

Overall, i really enjoy doing this work, hope that i can improve  in next task.

After releasing the lantern, daughter discovered Crystal has disappeared.

What left on the floor is a marigold and a red necklace.

Daughter takes out the picture, spot the red necklace and the mask crystal was wearing is the same with the photo.

Daughter knowing that that’s her mum.

(She know that no matter what, her mum is by her side)

Daughter releasing the flying lanterns believing that this can guide the way for her mum. In the same time, it also represent how she try to get rid of her sadness by releasing the flying lantern.

These scenes are full of dark colors and blue. I think orange can bring a bit of warmth to the scene. That’s why the flowers and the lantern are in orange.

Daughter met Crystal in a tent. Crystal spotted daughter is sad, so she helps her do make up and telling her that her mother would want her to be happy.

After the make up, they went out from the tent, people wearing masks, wearing colourful clothes, dancing happily.

I like the lanterns on the top and the colorful strips the lady is spreading.

There is a cloud with mother’s face on which show that she is missing her mother.

There two buildings show that she arrived the Mexico city.

Float parade, finally drawing something look happier. Flowers and the pattern on its face are the signature of the day of the dead.

These scenes are the saddest thing i have ever drawn. 

The calendar behind the girl written mum’s funeral.

For the funeral scene, i try to draw the funeral in chinese style. The picture in the middle, the flower stand on the side, the incense stick... I try to draw as much as i remember. It’s not a great experience for me to draw these scenes as it just made me stuck in a sad mood.

The mum lying on the coffin. A smile is still on her face, showing that she loves to smile/ optimistic...

The photo book given to the daughter is very important as its the key lead her  to Mexico to experience the day of the death.

The mask shown in the 11th scene is important too.

The first two illustration is tapei’s 101 building and xifen. Then there is a scene of the daughter and mother releasing flying lantern.

It then zoom out to the photo book to show that it is just  a throwback their memories.

There is a tear drop on the photo book to shows that the daughter is in a sad mood.

I’ve added some details on the last scene , for example the NOT WELCOME carpet and the calendar behind.

EXT. TAIPEI – CONTINUOUS

Fluffy cloud drifting across the clear blue sky.

Birds chirping, wind blowing softly.

Pan downwards to the buildings.

Taipei 101 in the middle.

EXT. SHIFEN

Sounds of surrounding, people chattering.

Little girl with short orange straight hair, pale skin, round

eyes, wearing a light blue dress.

Old lady, with short grey curly hair, relatively darker skin,

smiling, crinkles at the corner, wearing glasses, with pearl

necklace, Cardigan and a dress.

Mom and daughter standing on the train track.

Wishes of them written on the lantern.

Giggling, going to release the Sky lantern.

FADE IN:

Mum and daughter released the sky lantern,

Smiling, wishing their wishes come true.

ON PHOTOBOOK

FADE OUT: showing the memories of them.

12thMarch- Mum’s funeral.

INT. MUM’S FUNERAL

Sad sounds and mood.

A picture of mum smiling hanging in the middle of the hall.

A long table with incense sticks, food and things in paper

form.

In front of the table, is mum’s body.

Daughter, and Dad kneel down in the side welcoming

guests.

Relatives and friends wearing only black and white.

Gather together, standing/sitting on the left and right side

of the hall.

INT. FUNERAL.

ZOOM IN: MUM’S BODY.

Although she’s dead, a smile still hanging on her face.

INT. DAUGHTER’S BEDROOM.

Mum left her with a box.

She opens it, and there’s a photobook, and a teddy bear.

Daughter opening the photobook, start flipping it, and saw an

eye- catching picture of mum at a young age.

The picture shows her smiling happily in Mexico, enjoying the

Day of the dead.

Underneath the photo – a sentence written: 1031 DEAD IS

NOTHING WE HAVE TO AFRAID OF, BRING THE BEAR WITH YOU.

This is a sentence her mother always say to her.

Daughter is in doubt at first, but at last she decided to buy

a ticket to Mexico.

EXT. PLANE

Daughter sitting inside the plane, looking tired.

She looks outside the window, gazing at the clouds, thinking

about her mother.

Clouds forming to her mother’s face.

EXT. MEXICO CITY

The sky is cloudless, sun shines like a fireball, the whole

city is filled with hot, stuffy warm air.

The sky became dark, the float parade starts.

Daughter saw a little tent, she went in with curiosity.

INT. TENT

She saw a girl with a skull mask sitting in behind a table.

The table is covered with a fine tablecloth, on top is bread,

water, candles, lanterns and marigolds.

‘Hi, I am Crystal, do you need anything? ‘asked the girl.

‘Candles is for lighting the way for the ancestors, water is

for them to clean their body and drinking, bread is for

eating, paper lanterns is for lighting up the way to another

world and at last, marigolds for guiding the spirits to their

altar by their vibrant color and scent.

Daughter looks at the marigolds sadly, as marigolds is her

mother’s favorite flower.

Crystal spotted her sadness, and ask daughter what happened.

Daughter told her everything.

Crystal pushes her on a chair and start doing her make up, she

explained to her about the day of the dead, ‘The dead will

come alive again today, I believe that your mum would love to

see you smile.’

Daughter smiles.

EXT. MEXICAN CITY

Night time.

Loud music, colorful lanterns hanging, people dancing in fancy

Clothes. Crystal hold her hand and run out from the group to a

graveyard.

EXT. GRAVEYARD

Blue night sky masked with shimmering stars.

Every grave is covered with flowers, candles and different

decorations.

EXT. GRAVEYARD

They sat down, daughter thought of her mother.

Crystal spotted her sadness, she hands her a sky lantern, ‘Light up and guide her the way.’

Daughter gets the lantern and releases it. She gazes at the

lantern for a long time, until it vanished from her sight.

‘Thank you crystal.’ Daughter hears no responds, she turns her head and discovers that crystal is gone, and there is a

marigold and her red necklace on her original position.

Daughter look at the picture of her mother realized that

crystal’s mask looks exactly the same with her mother’s.

Daughter smiling and knowing that although her mum was dead

but is always by her side.

After the presentation, i received comments from Kath saying that there a lot of word on the page. I think that i should have selected a simpler page... At last, i have simplified one of the conversation, and break it down into simple illustrations.

Storyboard Artist

Bosco Ng ,James S. Baker ,Rob Gibbs- Great use of color

I really like their use of color it helps created mood. The storyboard uses a lot of blue, as the main theme of Finding Nemo is the sea.

Keith Tucker- Good Framing

He is good at framing and can clearly show the character’s movements. His famous works included, pinky and the brain and the spiderman etc.

Hayao Miyazaki -Mixed Media/ Good Framing

Miyazaki is  Ghibil Studio’s film director, producer, screenwriter, animator, author, and storyboard artist. His famous work included spirited away, Ponyo and My neighbour Totoro. He creates 2D animation. In his storyboards, we can see that he uses different media, which makes the storyboard look more interesting. He mainly uses ink pen, water color, wooden color pencil in his storyboard.

As i usually do my work on illustrator/photoshop, i tried to do the exercise by hand-drawn. This scene contain 2-shot, close-up, medium close-up, medium-shot, over-the-shoulder, reverse etc.

And i tried to draw some of the scene digitally, here is the outcome.

I think that it comes out better digitally, thats why i redraw one page.

Exercise 01

The 1st exercise is to take one of our favourite movies and choose a scene or two that lasts a few minutes to do a rough storyboard.

I have chosen Miss Peregrine’s Home For Peculiar Children. It is directed by Tim Burton. I really like the film, as it got a really refreshing plot. I choose the scene when Miss Peregrine took Jacob to a tour, and introduce him to different peculiar children.

Actually it was quite hard for me to decide to use what film as i got a lot of favourite film, like finding Nemo, inception etc. I tried to draw nemo roughly, but...

That’s why i used miss peregrine’s home for peculiar children at last..
