my most toxic trait is that I like to go to ao3 and reread my favorites of my own fic and be like yes please more dopamine self click next chapter instead of working on my sad lonely WIPs.

awhile ago I went through and calculated the "hits per kudos" rate for a bunch of my fic (because I was wildly procrastinating) and, anecdotally, this is quite true. my best hits per kudos rate (e.g., fewest hits to get a kudo) are the road wanted wear, which is the final(?) fic in my tim gutterson/alex petrosyan AU-from-AU* (3.7 hpk) and two roads diverged, the first in that series (5.08 hpk), which is about as niche as you can get. Roughly the same trends for hits per comment, including the same fics.
Using Archive of Our Own (AO3) as their primary source, researchers analyzed metadata from over 670,000 fanworks across 23 fandoms. They measured a story’s novelty by comparing its content against other stories in the same fandom and measured success primarily with a ratio of hits to kudos, then compared the two datasets. Researchers found that contrary to balance theory, the middle ground between familiar and novel does not guarantee success for fanfiction. Their research shows that stories that were more familiar tended to get more clicks, but it was stories with more novelty that had a higher hit to kudos ratio.
“Although high-novelty works tend to be read by fewer people, those who read are more likely to express their enjoyment.”
Deeply interesting tidbit from OTW signal today!
I'll say I've seen the same dichotomy reflected in a smaller scale in my own work on the archive. The familiar or popular gets more hits, but unique and unusual works have a higher response from readers.

sometimes I read 911-related posts on this website responding to truly batshit opinions on Eddie and Maddie and Ravi (and probably more that happily I've never come across) and I'm so glad that I have managed to escape actually interacting with the people who hold those views.

Meeting genuine adults that think legal = good, illegal = bad is so bizarre, like bro not even the law itself agrees that that is a good ethical framework

It must suck trying to get anything done in Harlan, legal or illegal, knowing all your plans exist at the whim of whatever weird psychosexual power play Raylan Givens and Boyd Crowder have going on at any given moment. You think you’ve got everything lined up, you’ve covered every contingency, and then through no fault of your own your bar gets blown up or something because Boyd sent the Marshal a text saying “You up ;)?” and Raylan left him on read. Entire criminal syndicates have been destroyed because these two can’t learn to suck each other off like normal people.

Hey you all, there's a sex pollen plus fandom exchange thing going. I'm not saying I'm signing up for sure, but if this is your thing, go wild. It's still in the nominations phase.

eddies rant in the grocery store is so absolutely crazy girl bc he says “you know how much christopher misses you? how could you? youre not around” (which is something you could say to a wife who left without contact for two years and then Died). except he cant say that to his wife bc shes dead! and he doesnt want to be the man mad at his dead wife! so he has to say it to the next closest person: his extremely platonic coparenting best friend that he misses so badly he has to hide behind his sons sadness instead of admitting his own

lol ok so it seems people are into this, may have to bump it up to next in the 911 priority writing queue. apparently I am naturally inclined toward writing fics that involve the most unhinged versions of people.
WIP Wednesday
more morning commute freak4freak brainrot that I typed in my notes for the future
“Buck,” Maddie says slowly, “are you telling me you’ve had sex with both of Eddie’s exes?” “He started it!” Buck protests. Maddie’s eyebrows rise even higher. “He slept with Natalia, I mean. He asked me if that was cool, and I said it was because I had to, and he did. And he had sex with Ali—” “Did he ask you about that one too?” “No, uh—” Buck winces. “No, she was leaving the house when I got back from Ana's.” Maddie punches him in the arm. “Ow!” “I'm revoking your couch privileges,” Chimney says. "Go back to your house."

new fic chapter: Firehose91: 4.9 stars, ch 3/4
Ravi skims through Buck’s profile, then swipes through the pictures. “Oh,” he says. “I thought you wanted—I didn’t realize you guys were looking for a third.” “What?” Buck snatches his phone back from Ravi. “We aren’t, we’re not like that. I’m looking for a relationship, and Eddie’s straight.” Ravi looks confused. “Have you looked at this profile? It’s like fifteen photos of you guys together and one of you with O-face.”

new fic chapter: smart enough to recognize a bad idea, ch 15/26
Raylan's POV, baby you're a bad idea.
Tim closes his eyes and says in a low voice, “I’m so fucking tired, Raylan.” Raylan leans back carefully next to him and Tim slumps further, until his cheek’s resting against Raylan’s shoulder. “Sorry I didn’t come by the other night when I called. I figured, I come by, things’d end the wrong way.” A lot like tonight, except tonight he wasn’t willing to settle for hearing Tim breathing on the other end of the phone line. “They always seem to.” Tim sounds about as heartbroken as Raylan’s been feeling.
