Louie followed her inside, taking in the familiar apartment before turning back to her wide-eyed face. “Because I know a lot of people were curious,” He told her, wondering if she would dart off to the side like a deer, “And when I mentioned it just now you got all jittery and nervous, and I’ve only ever seen your eyes do that when you’re lying.” Louie added, but followed it with a slow smile, hoping to be reassuring. “What did I do now?” He asked, wondering what horrific thing she had seen him do.

-
“That’s cheating,” she huffed, shutting the door behind him. She hesitated by the door, hating that she had easily given away everything with her expression. “Well, the deities were involved in the decision and I wanted to know what changed their mind,” she replied. Of course she was curious as well, as were a lot of people it seemed. It had been a terrible future and she wasn’t sure she wanted Louie to see it for himself either. He still had a long way to go before he was the Louie that was in love with her, and in love with Kang. “Who’s to say you did anything bad, Louie?” she asked. “Maybe it was just horrible and I don’t want to relive it.”

Louie and Mercy usually tried to meet once a month, in the same coffee shop at the same time and place. This day, however, Louie had been waiting for some time and the deity still had not shown herself. Louie checked his phone, huffing quietly and staring at the coffee and the banana bread he’d ordered for her. It seemed he’d been stood up.
Tumblr media
Beginning to worry that perhaps something had happened, Louie decided to call around to her apartment. Most would have thought him an idiot for worrying so much over a deity that could defend herself far better than most other creatures on Earth, but despite Mercy’s irritation over it, he wouldn’t stop worrying about her. He pressed the buzzer to her apartment, waiting to see if there would be an answer. He couldn’t remember doing anything wrong, though he’d been wrong before…

eri-mergo:
Mercy was being incredibly patient with him even though he didn’t deserve it. She deserved some honesty, if nothing else. He hated to worry her, so he braced himself, and tried to take her advice.
“You’re right. It’s just that… well, you’re very kind. I wish we’d known each other in the Divine Realm. Maybe I wouldn’t have felt so alone.” He sighed, regaining enough of himself to make his mouth work. “I just have this feeling that you will be the last friendly deity I encounter for a long time.”
“Thank you. Genuinely, it means a lot to me.” For some reason, it felt good to get Mercy’s approval about his tattoos. He’d done them initially as a rebellious act. His bosses had all disapproved of everything he did, and the tattoos were no different. He wasn’t sure what Elio thought of them, but he’d likely have sided with Eri’s bosses. People had told him they were beautiful before, but somehow, to hear a deity say it made it more special.
“That sounds like a lot of fun. What kind of music do you dance to?” The mental image of her dancing was somehow delightful to him, bringing a smile to his face. “Me? I’m still trying to figure that out. It’s been a very long time since I’ve had free time. But I’ll give dancing a try. There must be something to it’s good for you.”
-
Mercy could remember days where the world overwhelmed her and how having a friend could help. She was having one of those days today and she had found herself a new friend. Her thumbs continued to brush soothing circles on his biceps until Eri started to relax. Her expression filled with warmth and she hugged him again, unable to help herself. “You won’t have to be lonely any longer,” she promised. “You’ll always have a companion in me if you need it.”
The deity shouldn’t have to feel alone in this world and she hoped he never would have to while in the city. “I hope I won’t be the last friendly one you find.” Mercy knew it was uncertain though, not having many deity friends herself though she desired that closeness with her own species.
She always admired art and the fact that he was using it to bless people was a wonderful gesture. It was more lasting and impressive than her own blessings that normally came in the shape of a daisy chain she’d braided together. “I’ve got one,” she admitted, whispering like she was sharing a secret. “It’s not nearly as impressive, it’s just a small moon outline.” It was one of the things she’d done in recent years with a friend, trying to explore more of what this world had to offer. “They’re a beautiful gift that you’re sharing, that’s so wonderful.”
His bright smile made her own smile beam just as brightly in return. “Oh well, I’m a little bit stuck in the past. I love jazz and big band swing and doo wop from the 1960′s. They’re very good at music here,” she replied, listing off the styles she liked to dance to. Eri was certainly very new to the world if he was still figuring these things out for himself. “I could take you dancing one night,” she offered. “I have a friend who owns a club called the Mind’s Eye, it has a lot of parties and we could go together.”
“No, don’t be sorry,” she said softly, wanting to ease his worries. Emotions were normal but seeing him so overwhelmed made the deity want to soothe his worries. It was good to be around someone she could have kinship with. The other deities in the city rarely talked to her, making her feel as though she was too low level for them to care about. She wished she could have this connection with anyone, and another of her kind would make her heart feel full, she was certain of it.
She gave him a moment to collect himself, just holding onto him as long as Eri needed it. “Not at all. It’s not foolish to feel, I think our kind could benefit from these feelings,” she said softly, like she was telling him a secret. Since they had just met, she didn’t want to push anything and she just held him until he moved away, wiping his eyes.
“They’re very beautiful, you’re very talented at what you do,” she said, knowing she could not tattoo herself, or even draw something worth inking on a body permanently.
“For fun?” she hummed, trying to think about what she did do for fun. “I like taking walks and swimming. I like dancing the most I think. There is such wonderful music here and if there’s a chance to dance, you’ll find me on the dancefloor.” Most of the time it was a certain witch leading her in these dances but she pushed that thought from her mind, knowing that thinking about Louie only made her feel sad lately. “What about you? Have you found a favourite thing yet?”

“It has indeed…” Kang nodded awkwardly. “And same. Work. And I’ve been trying to do this TikTok thing,” he said and stooped down to pick up his phone from where he placed it on the ground to film.
“Turns out if videos go viral, I can make a lot of money off of them.” The idea had come from the life he led in that alternate timeline and it seemed harmless to give it a try now since it had nothing to do with how things turned out for him in the end. It was easier to talk about this too just to get rid of some of the awkwardness hanging in the air between them.
-
“Oh yes I remem... I mean, I think you’ll do very well at it,” she said, quickly changing the course of her sentence. She didn’t want to admit to what she’d seen in the future, of what became of them. There were the positives though, like Kang and his videos. She had never understood the platform herself but she liked watching the dancers.
“Do you need any help recording?” she asked, looking down at the strange angle he was filming from. “Wouldn’t it be better for them to see you closer up?” Plus she was sure that the elbow to the face had ruined his last attempt at the video anyway.

eri-mergo:
“Sorry. I’m terribly sorry.” He didn’t know why he’d teared up in the first place. But something about the situation felt like this was his last chance to have this kind of kinship with another deity. It felt like coming home, yes. It also felt like an ending. It made him feel terribly old. He didn’t know how to make it better, or go away.
Mercy moved to squeeze his bicep, and he leaned into her. She was gentle enough that no unpleasant sensations came to him from the contact. Merely the warmth that came from another living thing. “Thank you. You must find me foolish. Maybe I am.”
She’d asked about his tattoos, and he wiped his face, pressing the persistent tears away as he stared at the intricate ink on the back of his palms. “Yes, I did most of them.”
Eri was desperate to change the subject to something less dour. “What do you do for fun, Mercy?”
-
“No, don’t be sorry,” she said softly, wanting to ease his worries. Emotions were normal but seeing him so overwhelmed made the deity want to soothe his worries. Louie looked down at the takeaway box of their food held in his hands that the lady that owned the cafe had insisted that he take on with him, before hearing the door buzz and then click to let him inside. He made his way up the stairs until he reached Mercy’s apartment, knocking and waiting for her to let him inside. When she did, he could almost sense the tension between them, but he didn’t know why…
“Merce,” He greeted, offering her the box of baked goods, “You sure you’re okay for me to come in?” Louie could have read her mind, but he’d made a promise that he wouldn’t. Everyone was behaving so strangely since the covens had offered to allow people to see into their potential futures….
“Did you go to one of the covens?”
Tumblr media
-
She waited by the door, impatiently twisting her fingers together. It wasn’t Louie’s fault, she reminded herself. The future had been hard and Mercy had only made it more difficult for her friend. They might have loved each other but she saw how much he loved Kang as well. Mercy being rescued had just destroyed that. Even though it wasn’t a real future, she still didn’t want to be the one to cause anyone pain. Especially her friends.
When he knocked, she hesitated for a moment before finally pulling the door open. Her heart lurched with the memory of how much they could love each other and any chance of smiling slipped away. “Hello, Louie,” she greeted, taking the box from his hands with a quiet thank you. “Yes, of course, you can come in,” she agreed.
Stepping aside, she opened the door for him but she froze, her eyes going wide. “W - what? Why would you say that?” she asked, trying to play it off. Mercy was a terrible liar and she knew he’d see it on her face she she hastily made her way to the kitchen instead.

louiegrimaldi:
Louie frowned at the way she said his name over the intercom. So, she was just going to leave him standing outside? “Are you busy with someone?” He asked. It wasn’t as though she couldn’t have plans with other people, after all… Maybe Louie had gotten too used to being able to see her at this time every other week. “I’m holding an event at The Mind’s Eye, tonight. I thought you might like to come, was all.” Louie paused again, “I can leave the invite instructions in your mail box if you’d rather.”
Tumblr media
-
She hesitated to answer because no, she was by herself and yes, she was avoiding him. “No, nothing like that...” she said, trailing off. Clasping her hands together, she hesitated by the intercom, knowing she should just allow him to come up but she was scared to see him. Mercy could remember everything that could happen to them, their pain and joy and loss. She had her chance, it was time for someone else. The uncertainty in his voice made her heart ache for him. Mercy could recall a time when Louie hadn’t shown up at their lunch and she had gone storming over to get an explanation from him. That memory made her fill with guilt. It seemed like she had a lot to feel guilty about lately.
Her finger went to the intercom button, pressing it so Louie could come up. “No, no, it’s okay. Come on up. We can’t let the banana bread go to waste.”  She supposed she couldn’t avoid him forever.

“You make a wonderful healer, Mercy. The humans are lucky to have you looking out for them.” Eri said. Something about Mercy was so immensely comforting. She was young, yes. But it was refreshing to speak to anther deity without having to worry about elders being biased against him, or thousands of years of misunderstandings and bad blood, like there was with his higher ups back in the Divine Realm. It was just about the one thing deities were meant to be about: helping humans. He blinked back tears, and laughed at himself. “Sorry. I’m sorry. Talking to you just feels like coming home.”
“I haven’t been here for long enough to figure much of myself out. But I enjoy doing what I did before. I’m a tattoo artist.” Eri gestured to the tattoos visible on his arms and chest. “I use a special blessed ink to protect humans.”
-
“I do try to be a good one,” she said, clutching her hands together before herself. After the past few days, she felt so renewed in energy just to be around another deity like herself that she couldn’t stop her smile. By deity standards, she was very young and she rarely got to see others of her kind, knowing most stuck to the divine realm. Seeing his tears made her eyes widen and she rushed forward, placing her hands on his biceps to hold him. “It’s okay, it’s good to feel like you’re home,” she assured. “It’s so wonderful thought, I’m glad I can give you some of the comfort you give me as well.”
When he gestured to them, Mercy’s eyes were drawn to the art that covered Eri’s arms and chest. “The ones you have are beautiful,” she said, admiring them for a moment. “That’s a wonderful way to share your blessings,” she said, knowing that hers was likely more rudimental than that. “Did you do any of your tattoos?”
She laughed softly, feeling happy now to be in the presence of another deity and a new one at that. It was so rare that she came across them outside of the Divine Realm, not that she visited often or at all in recent years. After she had almost fell, she had spent plenty of years in the divine realm but she eventually decided to return. Here, she felt like she had a purpose. “And to meet you as well,” she said. She almost wanted to hug him but she knew to be polite and give people space.
“I have, well just this city because I lived elsewhere before but I work as a nurse,” she said. He seemed rather new so she thought she should try and explain it as best she could. “I help heal people who need it but I specialise in healing minds. Have you found what you want to do while you’re here?”

“Okay…” he said as he looked her over. Her face seemed fine after the healing magic she performed and all Kang could do was take her word for it. Now that they had gotten that out of the way, all the fox spirit could do was stare at her. He still remembered what he saw of their friendship in that alternate world, had seen what Mercy’s life had become and it pained him.
“Um, so I haven’t seen you in awhile. Have you been doing well?”
-
Healing was her specialty after all so she knew it would be no problem with time. She could heal it properly when they weren’t in such a public setting. For a long moment, she watched the way he started at her. The pain in his eyes was reminiscent and she wanted to pull the spirit into a hug but after their last conversation, even though it was in an alternate world.
“It has been awhile,” she agreed. They had never been so awkward before and now Mercy wasn’t sure what to do. “Oh, much the same. I’ve been working and stuff... how about you?”

“Well, you’re a whole lot more knowledgeable than me! I think that makes you an expert.” Eri laughed.
“Mercy. It’s wonderful to meet you.” He’d never heard the name before, but that didn’t mean anything in particular. He had a notoriously bad memory, and he’d never really paid much attention to things that went on outside the Divine Realm. But he was paying attention now. Or, trying to. Sometimes he felt like there was just too much information to fit into his mind, and that one day, it’d break. It was a nice feeling. He hadn’t been out of his depths in many, many centuries. The fact that he was now was allowing him to come out of that sleepy mood home had become associated with. He didn’t feel quite so old here, or like he knew everything, had done everything. Home didn’t change. Not like this place.
“You said you’ve been here for eighty years? What do you do with your time?”
-
She laughed softly, feeling happy now to be in the presence of another deity and a new one at that. It was so rare that she came across them outside of the Divine Realm, not that she visited often or at all in recent years. eri-mergo:
“Eighty years? You must be an expert by now!” Eri laughed. It didn’t occur to him that humans might not live that long and still look as this person did. Instead, the thing that tipped him off was simply paying attention to her with his full focus. He turned to face her, and felt that unmistakable kinship, the sense that she was a deity, just like him. Though it was less obvious due to her youth, it was still there. He wondered how he’d ever missed it.
“Hello,” he said, split between elation that he was meeting another deity and fear that she might’ve heard about what he’d done with the demons. If she’d been in the Divine Realm within the past few days, no doubt she would’ve. But he felt safe giving her his name. Safe because she wasn’t an elder, nor one of his higher ups, and because his age gave him some advantage here. “I’m Eri. What’s your name?”
Tumblr media
-
“I wouldn’t think I am,” she said, laughing softly. It was nice to see someone so enraptured with the world and what human’s were doing. “I think I learn something new every time I visit and the displays change,” she added, knowing he might like to return as well. She smiled up at him, watching the pieces click into place for him. His smile was brilliant, like looking at the sun itself. “Hello, you,” she greeted.
It wasn’t a deity she knew though she had rarely been to the Divine Realm in her three hundred years. She felt more akin to those on the earth than the deities in their home. It was always exciting to meet a new one. “It’s lovely to meet you, Eri,” she greeted, turning to offer her hand to him. “My name is Mercy. It’s very wonderful to have bumped into you.” She was rarely in the company of deities it and it seemed like Eri had done wonders to boost her mood in a simple meeting.

Mercy had to remind herself that the future versions of themselves weren’t real. That timeline would never happen because of the decision the council made, or so she had been told by the other deities. She twitched her nose from side to side, giving it a small rub. It still had some pain but that would fade. Once she was done, she noticed that Kang was staring at her and the glimmer of pain in his expression. She instantly felt guilty for how she had been feeling, Kang had died and that was far worse.
“Yes, all fine,” she answered, giving a polite smile despite how awkward it felt. “How about you? Dancing...?” she asked, looking at the little camera he had set up.

Louie had half been expecting that maybe Mercy had been called into the hospital unexpectedly, when her voice came through the intercom. “Merce, it’s me.” He replied, slipping his hands into the pockets of his jacket. “Did you forget we were meeting today?”
Tumblr media

The voice that rang through the crackly speaker was not the one she expected. “Louie?” she questioned before she let go of the intercom. Oh god, she shouldn’t have said anything. She should have just texted him instead of just ignoring their plans. “Crap,” she cursed to herself. Well it was too late to pretend like she wasn’t there, she had acknowledged him already. Tentatively pressing the intercom again, she acted like she hadn’t just been radio silent for thirty seconds. “Oh, I must have forgotten. So sorry, we’ll have to catch up next time.”

@mercyedwards She smiled at his enthusiasm as he spoke, clearly finding an appreciation in the displays that she might not have noticed. It was a good reminder to focus one what was in front of her and not the things she couldn’t change. “The basics?” she repeated, furrowing her brow. Taking a moment, she looked the man over, wondering if he might be another supernatural creature. Something told her he was like her but he was far older than magic she’d seen for a while.

“No, not my first rodeo,” she agreed, glancing back at the displays. “I’ve been coming her for around eighty years or so.” If he was an older being, he would understand but if she was mistaken and they were human, she would have to play it off. “It still keeps me grounded every time I see it. This world is so old and there’s so much people still don’t know. It’s fascinating.”
"Eighty years? You must be an expert by now!" Eri laughed. It didn't occur to him that humans might not live that long and still look as this person did. Instead, the thing that tipped him off was simply paying attention to her with his full focus. He turned to face her, and felt that unmistakable kinship, the sense that she was a deity, just like him. Though it was less obvious due to her youth, it was still there. He wondered how he'd ever missed it.
"Hello," he said, split between elation that he was meeting another deity and fear that she might've heard about what he'd done with the demons. If she'd been in the Divine Realm within the past few days, no doubt she would've. But he felt safe giving her his name. Safe because she wasn't an elder, nor one of his higher ups, and because his age gave him some advantage here. "I'm Eri. What's your name?"

“What?!” Kang could not help looking more distressed by the fact that he had broken a deity’s nose. He never thought he would have it in him. He quickly placed himself between Mercy and anyone else who might be looking in their general direction while he waited for her to work her magic.
“Are you alright?” he asked again.

Kang’s shock was coming at a very bad time. If anything, they needed to draw attention away from each other. “I can heal it,” she repeated, trying to cover herself as best she can. With Kang placed himself between her and the wandering eyes of passer bys. With a few moments, she was able to put some of her magic into her nose, feeling it start to heal and click into place.
Once that was done, she felt like she could answer his question. “Given the rushed job, it will be fine. Maybe a little bruising,” she murmured. Finally she straightened up and turned her eyes towards the spirit. She felt guilty for her attitude and she reached out to touch Kang’s shoulder. “I’ll be okay, promise.”
