Angus, who hasn't fronted since the battle mentioned in 1.2: so uh. where are we headed ?
Ross, riding towards the heath: oh we're giving cawdor's title to macbeth.
Angus: cawdor??? but i thought macdonwald w
Ross: turns out cawdor committed treason too
Angus: WHUH .
wondering how much the play would change if i just (aims the Plurality Laser at characters)
obviously it would be a LOT easier to do with minor characters like. Ross/Lennox/etc but idk. just Interesting to me. (ignore the fact that they're all separate thanes with their own thanedoms lmao)

YOU ARE SO RIGHT ABOUT R&J THAT PLAY MAKES ME GO FERALLLL
THANK YOU!!!!
I think most of its hate comes from bored high schoolers and poor teaching. It manages to be so much more than a “horny teenage love story” without ever losing that immaturity that makes it so, SO fucked up. The vast majority of the deaths are kids!
And the writing!!! It feels like it’s going to be a silly comedy for the first few acts and then Mercutio dies and suddenly, all you can see in hindsight is the foreshadowing. When played well, I fully believe it can be just as good and moving as the “big four” tragedies.
#EXACTLY!!!#people call Romeo and Juliet at the end of the play melodramatic like they're not high schoolers who just watched#a bunch of their other high schooler aged friends DIE#they're in their teens and the world is legitimately out to get them and the only escape they can see is death.#hitting the Romeo Is A Whiny Baby crowd with a large bat like a piñata#romeo saw his best friend murdered in front of him so he got revenge and it got him severed from all of his relationships#and then he gets told that his wife is dead. i think he's earned the right to act how he does#sorry op this play was my first love hfbdjcjdgh i get so passionate about defending it from all the popular slander points

more people on tumblr would fuck with romeo and juliet if they engaged with the plays themes beyond a surface level and realised that at its core its about trying to escape the cycle of abuse
#so true#it's all ''we love when love is doomed by the narrative'' until they hear it's by shakespeare#trying your hardest not to become your parents because your parents have so many things wrong with them#and the punishment for that is death#shakespeare#romeo and juliet#(jigsaw voice) hello tumblr user. you have 30 minutes to explain why you don't like Romeo and Juliet.#if you bring up anyone's age or dramatic behaviour you will be comically crushed by a giant falling anvil.

i have actually read a LOT of the ones in the bottom tier but I don't remember them well enough and so i felt like grading them on vibes alone would be unfair
Macbeth my beloved
feel like im weird for liking titus andronicus but idk. something about cycles of violence and blood begetting even more blood until a family devours itself alive. idk
as a classics major i did Not love troilus and cressida but it might just be the weird characterization differences between this and the epics lmao
something about as you like it scratches my brain so good
EDIT: op i just saw your custom tier names and im like ohhhhhhhhh. I should've made a "this play exists" category LMAO
My Shakespeare play tier list!
(Slightly terrifying to see how many I still have to read, seeing as I've read 25 already...)
Here's the tier maker if you'd like to make your own:
#shakespeare#tier list#for a long time the tempest was my most-disliked play#not because it's bad but just like. idk. it feels all over the place to me and there's so much going on and i dont love it lmao#(i don't hate it though!)

Concept: Macbeth parody but after Macbeth kills the king he marries the king's widow and then the prince sees the ghost of his father and is sent on a quest of revenge where he pretends to act crazy and ultimately his inaction causes more pain than what he intended.
#ok no wait this is. hang on#malcolm feigning insanity WOULD cause macbeth not to view him as a threat#so then macbeth starts murdering everyone he DOES deem a threat. possibly including donalbain.#malcolm gets so paranoid that he lashes out against what he thinks is macbeth's spy and instead kills one of the thanes#gets shipped off to England where he meets with macduff like the original#maybe Ross got killed by malcolm idk. so duff/malcolm come back and instead of Ophelia's grave it's Macduff's family#many thoughts head full sorry op lmao

obsessed with the timeloop quality of stage plays...romeo and juliet can not escape verona even in death... theyve been repeating the same tragedy for hundrets of years again and again and again, details like what they look like or wear get altered but the core of the story stays the same. romeo dies and juliet follows. the knife draws blood and juliet wakes again to news of her betrothal to paris. does romeos depression stem from rosalines rejection of him or from the fact that hes done this a thousand times over?
#oough im going to throw myself into the town square fountain.......#i love a good time loop tragedy.#hell in high school i wrote a fic where mercutio realizes he's in a time loop and keep trying to stop everyone from dying#only to repeatedly die in other ways instead#romeo and juliet#shakespeare

Cawdor had been informed that someone else would be joining the meeting between him, Macdonwald, and a couple of Norwegian officials. Never in his life would he have expected the man who stood before him.
(mini-fic inspired by @withasideofshakespeare’s tumblr posts detailing Lennox's weird seemingly-disloyal nature in the text!)

I have a headcanon about Macbeth.
What if the reason that MacDonwald rebelled was that he encountered the three witches?

idk something about Ross and Angus riding up to Macbeth and Banquo in 1.3 and they're both co-fronting so they're like "yeah he bade us call you thane of cawdor :)"

obviously it would be a LOT easier to do with minor characters like. Ross/Lennox/etc but idk. just Interesting to me. (ignore the fact that they're all separate thanes with their own thanedoms lmao)

ooough. nonbinary Macduff whom Macbeth has always admired/envied
"Macduff doesn't need to overperform masculinity to be seen as Powerful and Masculine (to a degree. maybe only in just a default Strong = Man kind of way)" he thinks.
then he thinks about how much he had (and still has) to struggle, overperforming masculinity to be seen as a man. and even though Macduff is a good friend of his and a fellow thane, he can't help but feel bitter sometimes.

#something about the killing of Macduff's family as a display of the callousness encouraged by toxic masculinity#and also a fucked up test by macbeth to see whether macduff is ''man enough'' to fulfill the prophecy#spoiler alert. it never mattered. macbeth is just so deeply entrenched in toxic gender roles by that point in the play that he deems it fine

#macbeth#shakespeare#obvious disclaimer the Bad Guy With DID trope is incredibly harmful and insensitive and that's not what i'm trying to do here at all#disclaimer 2: plurality/multiplicity is a broad ass spectrum so obviously this is not a One Size Fits All Type portrayal#ok have I covered all my bases lmao#oh. that stage direction in 2.3 where Ross seemingly appears out of nowhere when Beth/lennox check out the murder scene#bro just got thrown into co-front with lennox#I also like the idea of them slowly switching from Ross to Lennox in 2.4#ross starts out talking about how horrible it all is. and then around the middle he realizes that macbeth will be king#lennox gets pushed to front bc Self Preservation so he declares he's going to the coronation#idk idk. also I would love to include Angus Menteith and Caithness in this system I just can't find good moments in text lmao#5.2 is just a big innerworld discussion between all of them
