Lauren Tsai, from model to first-rate artist
Far from being a fallen reality star, Lauren Tsai has been able to use her fame to propel her career as an illustrator, and she has even collaborated with brands like Nike or Marc Jacobs. And that is because Tsai, ever since she appeared in 2016 in the Japanese reality programme Terrace House (known around the world thanks to Netflix), has fascinated us for her introversion and artistic sensibility, two very uncharacteristic qualities of contestants of these kinds of shows.

Thai fashion designer Chu Suwannapha decided to take a trip to the city of Cape Town (South Africa) and instantly fell in love with it the moment he stepped out of the aeroplane. He was so enamoured by the blue ocean, the skyline and their spicy curry that he decided to build his life there, just like that, on a whim. Being a total unknown to other creatives of the region, he started out small by working for local fashion magazines, until he became the fashion director of some of the most prestigious ones in the country.

Nowadays the music world knows no genres or barriers instead, musicians talk about synergies and fusions and Cariño’s approach is in line with this. And that’s because Alicia Ros, Paola Rivero and María Talaverano have managed to bring urban music to pop, or what they would call “street” or “urban neighbourhood” pop, with their cover of C. Tangana’s Llorando en la limo where they changed the lyrics from “crying in the limo” to “crying in vespinos” (a classic Spanish moped brand) to better reflect their reality.

Motofumi Kogi, aka Poggy or Poggy The Man, is known as a legend in the world of collaborations after creating pieces and even collections, whether it be under his name or under the name of the store United Arrows & Sons, which he’s director of. For example, in just three years he has worked with Puma, Levi’s and Converse. And even though as a concept collaborations only started getting trendy from this decade onwards, Poggy has been defending the collaborative spirit for more than twenty years.

Yoon Ahn’s name might not sound familiar to many, but the woman who’s also known as Yoon AMBUSH is behind the Japanese brand whose Nike drop has been one of the biggest collaborations of the past year. She’s also the jewellery director for Dior Men, personally chosen by Kim Jones, and yet little is known about the head of one of the most important streetwear brands of the moment, who has been able to make a name for herself in this industry, against all odds.

Tierra Whack more than a rapper or a singer is an artist from head to toe who has managed to create her own imagery with Whack World, a visual album that doesn’t deal with genres, in which she presents fifteen singles that last a minute each. And with each song and video, most of them being totally surreal and heavily loaded with humour, she builds worlds that make up a universe that reflects how the precious and peculiar mind of Tierra, the next best new artist of 2019, works.
