Hey Wil. Long-time lurker, first-time asker: How do you improve yourself when everything is exhausting, and you kind of just wish you were dead? When you academically know things would be SO much better if you just... bothered, but really, you really, really, REALLY kind of wish you just... wouldn't wake up tomorrow?
I need you to know that you matter, and I need you to know that you are worthy.
Go back and read that again. Maybe even say it out loud if you need to. Because I need you to hear me, saying that to you, right now.
It sounds like you’re living with depression. I can relate SO HARD and it’s the worst to feel this way.
The really good thing is that this isn’t forever. This is your brain being out of whack, and giving you a hard time, as a result. Do you have a doctor for your head? Or a therapist? Or even a close, trusted friend of family member?
Okay, all of those people are here for you, to help you get through this, and live your best life. So you gotta do me a solid one, here, and get in touch with one of them, RIGHT NOW, and tell them I told you to tell them what you just told me, okay?
I’m going to let you in on a secret: Your experience belongs to you, but I am positive that I have felt my version of what you’re feeling right now, and it sucks.
But I knew that it wasn’t forever, and it turns out I was telling the truth! I got through it, and I’m on my third 5 out of 5 day in a row, after a lot of 1s, 2s, and 3s.
I’m going to share some of the things I do when I’m struggling, and feel the way you’re describing. Maybe one or more of these will be something you can do right now:
1. If you haven’t taken a shower today, do that.
2. If you haven’t eaten a nutritious meal in the last few hours, do that right away. It’s incredible how much low blood sugar can act as a force multiplier for Depression’s symptoms.
3. Get outside for a little bit. Honestly, even if it’s just to walk onto the porch and feel the sun on your face, do it.
4. Make yourself take a little walk. You don’t have to go do a big exercise thing. Just walk to the end of the driveway and back, or to the corner and back, or however much you feel like walking. Something happens when we get our blood moving around our bodies, and it’s been clinically proven to help make the symptoms we feel when we’re experiencing a major depressive episode better. It’s not going to magically make all the yuck go away, but it _always_ makes me feel a little better.
5. If you can snuggle with a pet, get in there and snuggle them like you’ve never snuggled before. There’s clinical evidence that snuggling our pets increases oxytocin production, which can act as a natural antidepressant.
6. DO NOT BLAME YOURSELF FOR FEELING THE WAY YOU FEEL. IT IS NOT YOUR FAULT.
I think that’s the list. It’s not too long, by design, so we don’t feel overwhelmed and just crawl back into bed.
And if you’re feeling sincerely suicidal, I need you to call 1-800-273-TALK (8255) right away, before you do anything else.
You’re gonna get through this. I promise. Please check in with me when you feel like it, and let me know how you’re doing, okay?
