The chronicle of the monk Herbert of Reichenau for the year 1021 ends āMy brother Werner was born on November 1.āĀ
1021 was not an uneventful year. The emperor began a campaign into Italy. Illustrious abbots died. There was an earthquake. But Herbert took the time to note, at the end of the year, that his brother was born.Ā
Of such acts of tenderness is history made.Ā

Scientists unlock the 'Cosmos' on the Antikythera Mechanism, the world's first computer
Scientists may have finally made a complete digital model for the Cosmos panel of a 2,000-year-old mechanical device called the Antikythera mechanism thatās believed to be the worldās first computer.
First discovered in a Roman-era shipwreck by Greek sponge divers in 1900, the fragments of a shoebox-size contraption, once filled with gears and used to predict the movements of heavenly bodies, has both baffled and amazed generations of researchers ever since.
The discovered fragments made up just one-third of a larger device: a highly-sophisticated hand-powered gearbox capable of accurately predicting the motions of the five planets known to the ancient Greeks, as well as the sun, the phases of the moon and the solar and lunar eclipses ā displaying them all relative to the timings of ancient events such as the Olympic Games. Negative Self-Talk as a Student
Through class group chats started for classes that are entirely online due to covid, I've been seeing a lot of troubling language from my peers. The one that really struck me was "I feel like I'm not smart enough to come up with an idea for the final project."
One of the greatest things I ever did for myself and my academic career was putting real, mental effort into not talking like this-- not even thinking like this. What you say and think will shape your reality. Finding something difficult is not a reflection on your self worth or ability.
Instead of saying "I am not smart enough for this" try "this assignment feels difficult because of xyz."
The key difference here is that the second sentence increases your agency to change the situation. If the assignment is difficult, you can reach out to instructors, TAs, tutors, and classmates. If you believe that you are stupid, all you can do is succumb to anxiety and hopelessness.
When I encounter something that I find to be particularly daunting, I make myself think (and sometimes I even say it out loud, as corny as that sounds) "I am persistent, I am dedicated, and I am going to succeed." I don't say smart, because being smart isn't helpful-- plenty of Formerly Gifted Kids can tell you that.
I, as your Internet Brother, am begging you to stop putting yourself down. Do not make obstacles for yourself by believing yourself into failure. It is okay for things to be difficult. It is okay to ask for help. It is not okay to be mean to yourself.
