i like that he calls shinpachi “that bastard” here instead of something like “that brat”. Hijikata generally only refers to pachi as “megane” or the like. they acknowledge each other the entire time in this arc 😙

also hiji thinking pachi is “showing off”/“acting cool” for giving tosshi the fanclub title 😌

I ship those two absolutely platonically but with a burning passion of a hundred suns. I love what they have in the series and what they could have. 

First of all - It’s a very unlikey relationship. Shinpachi has a lot of respect for authorities what makes him keep his distance. Hijikata is not a friendly kind of guy. They are different ages, live in different worlds socially and economically, don’t share any hobbies or interests. And yet they actually hit it off,because they aren’t that far off when it comes to personality. In my opinion they aren’t friends per se - there will be always distance between the two of them - but they are close enough. I think the closest comparison to what I think they have is a tight uncle - nephew relationship.

Do you have any Shinpachi and Hijikata headcanons? I was reading your Sougo one and the last sentence really caught my eye ^^

Oh Anon, thank you for that ask, Hijikata is my second favourite character in Gintama ^.^ Let’s see: 

Hijikata, much like Gintoki, sees a lot of potential and strength in Shinpachi, and sometimes (eh, who are we kidding, 90% of the time) regrets that Shinpachi isn’t part of the Shinsengumi. However, unlike Kondou and Sougo, he doesn’t think that Shinpachi will ever end up as one of them. He recognises the kind of bond between Shinpachi and Gintoki; it might be different from the one between him and Kondou, but it’s similar enough for him to know that Shinpachi’s loyalties will lie elsewhere.

Shinpachi won’t admit it but sometimes (especially when Gintoki is being really difficult) he imagines the wonderful, sweet life where instead of that lazy, good-for-nothing silver-haired perm-head, his boss is organized, reliable and dependable Hijikata. In turn, Hijikata sometimes imagines his own calm and problem-free life if it was Shinpachi in Sougo’s place. 

75% of the time when Hijikata comes to the Shimura’s Dojo, “Looking for Kondou-san” is just an excuse to talk with Shinpachi. At first it was job related - Hijikata  wanted to sneakily interrogate Shinpachi a little about Gintoki and Yorozuya’s connections with Katsura. It turned out that Shinpachi was much more (and Hijikata was a bit less…) cunning that he seemed, and that didn’t go anywhere. BUt they both realized that they actually LIKE talking to each other, and that they can unwind by talking about everyday annoyances. As the time went, Shinpachi might have started sneaking in some tibids of information about cases Yorozuya was involved in (and Shinsengumi were investigating), and Hijikata might have started giving indirect tips on things that were going to go down (so that Yorozuya could KEEP OUT of it), but they both try to stick to complaining and drinking tea in companionable silence. 

Both Shinpachi and Hijikata are very interested in Kondou’s whereabouts, so after Shinpachi gets a phone, they exchange smses about where Kondou is, where he should be, and where he could be. When Shinpachi finds Kondou in a really wierd place or position, he sends a photo; Hijikata never writes back to those, but he (secretly) absolutely loves it and saves each one on his phone. 

Shinpachi keeps a bottle of mayo in his house, and always remembers to add some to the tea he makes for Hijikata. 

Hijikata feels oddly protective of Shinpachi. Unlike him, Shinpachi wears his heart on his sleeve, is emotional and not afraid to tell (or show) others how he feels. He is open to other people and cares about them almost instantly. Hijikata just wants him to never have a reason to stop that and shut himself up… like he himself did when he was a kid. He wants to see Shinpachi grow up with that optimism intact.
