The novelist writes from inside. I’m rather sensitive on this point, because I write science fiction, or fantasy, or about imaginary countries, mostly—stuff that, by definition, involves times, places, events that I could not possibly experience in my own life. So when I was young and would submit one of these things about space voyages to Orion or dragons or something, I was told, at extremely regular intervals, “You should try to write about things you know about.” And I would say, But I do; I know about Orion, and dragons, and imaginary countries. Who do you think knows about my own imaginary countries, if I don’t? But they didn’t listen, because they don’t understand, they have it all backward. They think an artist is like a roll of photographic film, you expose it and develop it and there is a reproduction of Reality in two dimensions. But that’s all wrong, and if any artist tells you, “I am a camera,” or “I am a mirror,” distrust them instantly, they’re fooling you, pulling a fast one. Artists are people who are not at all interested in the facts—only in the truth. You get the facts from outside. The truth you get from inside. OK, how do you go about getting at that truth? You want to tell the truth. You want to be a writer. So what do you do? You write.

Hi Neil,
Do you think every story needs an antagonist?
No.

You don't write fanfiction from what I remember, so when I saw this I wanted to send it to you. It's a screenshot of my textbook for my children's literature class.

page 217 of the text, but 233 of the .pdf
I think it's fair to describe A Study in Emerald or A Case of Death and Honey as fanfiction.

Hey.. have you ever been a jealous person? Like in the early part of your career (or even now) did it ever make you feel a little shitty when your peers succeeded in ways that you think are more admirable or important than your own personal successes? Im an actor and I hate that I get so envious of people but I cant help it. Even when I am genuinely happy about the accomplishments of my friends, there is always that twinge of jealousy that I cant escape and I really want to know how to get over it because it makes me feel like a terrible person.
Thanks xoxo
I don't think so. I always liked being me and making the things I made and never wanted to be someone else making other things.
I used to get jealous at the start of my career when other people had huge long signing lines and I didn't, but once I did I discovered that it's nicer not to miss dinner because you were signing and I found I really missed the days of the shorter signing lines.
But I'm lucky. I've got enough awards that I don't mind if I ever get or don't get another award. I've had the Coraline film made from one of my books, and I put David Tennant and Michael Sheen together. I've written a few decent stories over the years. I'm okay.

how do you feel abt the kiss? (you know *exactly* what I mean)
The one in The Sleeper and the Spindle? I think it was necessary to wake the sleeper. Chris Riddell's drawing of that scene is very powerful.

David Tennant talks about Good Omens Season 3 at the BAFTA TV Awards red carpet :), 12.05.2024
Int: Are we getting another season?
David: Of Good Omens?
Int: Yes.
David: We start filming in January. It's the final one, though.
Int: Right?
David: So one more and it, the whole saga will come to an end.
Int: So no more Michael Sheen kisses.
David: Well, you don't know how many we've got lined up for Series Three. I mean, neither do I, to be honest, but, you know.
Int: Are you having a good time filming this?
David: Deeply joyous. It's deeply joyous. I mean, mainly because I get to hang out with Michael every day. And talk nonsense and, and they're great scripts and it's just a brilliant, kind of mad, crazy world, so. I love it, yeah.

The discovery represents a potential new way to recruit the immune system to fight treatment-resistant cancers using an iteration of mRNA technology and lipid nanoparticles, similar to COVID-19 vaccines, but with two key differences: use of a patient’s own tumor cells to create a personalized vaccine, and a newly engineered complex delivery mechanism within the vaccine.
Within 48 hours, the four human study participants showed remarkable results: their immune systems went into turbo cancer-destroying mode. And without surgery, radiation, or dangerous chemotherapy.
Folks, we may have a cure for cancer within your lifetime.

Hi Neil, I have a random question, can angels and demons be neurodivergent? Thank
I don't think any angels or demons are what we would recognize as Neurotypical. They are angels and demons, after all.

The UK government announced today that schools in England are going to be banned from teaching children of any age about gender identity. I have an incredible 11 yo nonbinary kiddo who starts secondary school in September, and I'm already worried about what their school experience will be like because of how beautifully and authentically they are themselves and how it will br received, but I'd had faith that the school at least would protect them and defend their right to choose their pronouns and change in separate areas for PE, etc, we specifically chose a school where they said they would do this and already were for other people. And now I am terrified that safety net won't be there for them. They won't have a safe space.
I know you can't do anything about it. But I wanted to thank you for creating safe places in your books, comics, TV, the worlds you create - because for some of us it's all we get. Finley and I love watching Good Omens and DBD together and it makes me happy that they see a world they can belong in, even if it isn't always this one.
Thank you for the safe spaces.

I hope that Finlay's experiences at school are positive. And I'm sorry about the government.

Mr Gaiman if all the Good Omens (TV) characters were at an arcade and all tried that machine where you put a coin in, a punching bag drops down, and you punch it as hard as you can, who would get the highest score?
God.

Dearest Neil,
Is Michael Sheen your co-writer for Season 3? He claimed to know the whole story already, in an article on WalesOnline. You can't be done writing it all already... so Michael must be a collaborator, for him to know all.
I've told him the whole story.
And he's definitely read the first script and the end, and has probably by now read the first three episodes and the last one.

Neil wtf
I saw on Twitter that a lot of people were talking about a bit of GO sequel where Aziraphale is in a motel and that he was watching an adult film or something vaguely in the same style
Can I have some context ? 😭
This kind of scenario sounds like a fever dream
It was a plot strand from the original sequel to Good Omens that cannot (alas) work any longer because hotel TVs no longer have little square units with buttons on top of them that give you access to the Pay Per View movies that the hotel is showing, after first showing you two free minutes.
The plot strand involved Aziraphale trying to watch an entire movie for free in random two minute increments in order to understand the plot. The movie was going to have been one of those heavily censored Adult movies they showed on Pay Per View back then, and Aziraphale was on a strict budget.
