I wanted to paint a girl putting her hand into the last ray of sunlight... then a volcano popped up behind her. I originally painted a butterfly alighting on her finger, but it ruined the composition. A friend saw it and mistook the butterfly for an erupting volcano (apparently I need to practice my butterflies), so that's where the volcano idea originated.
