A sky full of stars, galaxies and a comet. Can you recognize anything in this shot? This was my very first tracked shot ever, shot January 24th, 2015. Igloo season is nearly upon us. Anyone else excited about getting out under the stars on a crisp, clear winter night? This was my first successful igloo build two years ago. It’s crazy to spend five hours building something that I slept in for about three hours, just so I could shoot the stars over it. Last night I watched The Dawn Wall documentary about Tommy Caldwell and Kevin Jorgeson free climb up the Dawn Wall of El Capitan in Yosemite National Park. The story is really one about Tommy’s life and overcoming obstacles and his true friendship with Kevin. It was an amazing story of perseverance that everyone should watch even if you’re not into climbing. Anyway, I wanted to repost this this shot of the milky way rising over half dome because not only was this the first time I tried shooting the milky way in January. But it was actually fourteen days after Tommy and Kevin successfully climbed the Dawn Wall on El Capitan. I could totally relate to Tommy overcoming so many obstacles and turning to the Dawn Wall for healing as I turned to night photography in a very similar way. About six years ago, I began following this guy’s photography on social media. Two years later I decided to give night photography a try for myself. After capturing my first milky way shots on my own, I realized that I wanted to invest in a workshop with Ben a couple months later, as it was his work that inspired me. His encouragement that I was on the right path for my own photography to take off is what helped me decide to dedicate all of my free time to mastering the craft of night photography.
