What’s Haute: The Best of Santa Barbara
We highly recommend you book a private tour at Jonata, which is owned by Stanley Kroenke, who also counts the St. Louis Rams and Denver Nuggets among the items in his portfolio, though it is winemaker Matt Dees that is personally responsible for creating the earthy blends of Sangiovese, Syrah and Cabernet Sauvignon.  Jonata’s slate of wines demand the highest prices of any in Santa Barbara County; its 2009 bottlings fetch $125 each from club members, who are only allotted a certain number of bottles per year. There is no tasting room on the property; it is a private vineyard for those lucky (and luxurious enough) to be invited.

A Look at the Newly Approved Ballard Canyon AVA, Santa Barbara County
Though not yet a familiar name to most enthusiasts of California wine, it’s few vineyards are very high in quality. Some are strong brands on their own: Beckman Purisma Mountain, Stolpman, Larner and Jonata (winemaker Matt Dees).

~ Jonata  "Long-Lived Wines in Santa Barbara" Jonata is rebellion in every bottle. In its earliest days, the vineyard/winery was consulted to produce "weedy, lean wines"-Matt Dees decided he was going to do anything but. In Santa Ynez Valley, he created an amazing 600 acre "palette" for the sole purpose of making his distinctive wines. Dees' education is quite relative and extensive, but the approach to winemaking is definitely grounded in the vineyard. The land is divided into more than 50 blocks, was matched with different rootstocks, clones and planting densities to produce the Bordeaux grapes he loves so much. www.MondoVino.com

There are some people who are educated toward certain positions in life and others who are born to assume them—and Matt Dees is what you’d call a natural winemaker.  Armed with a degree in Soil Science from the University of Vermont and vintages at Staglin in Napa, California and Craggy Range in Hawkes Bay, New Zealand, Matt has an intrinsic feel for wine, from dirt to glass. Curious and experimental by nature, Matt’s approach to winemaking is grounded in the vineyard first and foremost: attuned to the vines, the weather, the soil, Matt seems almost to be a part of the vineyard itself.  Matt comes to wine with an untethered philosophy, a mindset embodied in The Paring. At the core of these wines one finds a wide-ranging exploration of style, vineyards and blending. When he’s not working with The Paring, Matt can be found making the wines for its big sister winery—Jonata.

Welcome “the brilliant, Michel Rolland-trained winemaker” Matt Dees and taste Jonata!
Saturday, July 23rd | 12-4pm| In-Store
Join Zachys as we host the winemaker from the sister property to Napa Valley's #1 Cult Winery—Screaming Eagle! Matt Dees, is the man behind Jonata, set on a backdrop of 600 acres, 80 of which are vineyard sites. This Santa Ynez property has redefined Southern California's vineyard landscape and winemaking and “since Jonata’s debut releases a few years ago, this has been one of the most impressive newcomers in the Santa Barbara region..” Robert Parker The Wine Advocate 2010
With Matt behind the label, he brings experience from vintages at Staglin in Napa and Craggy Range in Hawkes Bay, New Zealand as well as a degree in Soil Science from University of Vermont.
We’ll also being tasting the wines from The Paring. Made from vineyard blocks that don’t fit into the vintage style of the highly acclaimed Jonata, and sourced from Ballard Canyon in the Santa Ynez region. The Paring bottlings explore different blending opportunities from the rule-bending Paring White to the wide-ranging Cabernet net of the winemaker Matt Dees.

Dees is a winemaker who's emotionally and intellectually connected to structure, texture, and tannin and explores these deeply in his wines.
