British Music and The World
Being from a conservative middle class Punjabi family in Delhi. It was a norm to study hard, get good marks and move ahead to pursue a career in Engineering, Medical or Government Services. Who would have thought that during the course of that journey the likes of Take That, Duran Duran, Radio head will influence a soul like me for whom music became life.
It was during my high school days that I was selected as the lead singer of the school’s first rock band. Singing love songs of Take That, Soulful music of Eric Clapton, Rod Stewart, Elton John or Be it “Kiss from a Rose“ from Seal and winning various inter school , inter college competitions. Thsose singers had such an influence on our lives that we dreamt of becoming the next “Take That” group follow their style from the way they stand to the way they look. Looking or resembling them was the best was to attract attention. It was the “in thing”, “cool quotient” and what not.
Talking of influence and legacy that singers of English descent have had both with their kind of music and style, they proved their mettle through their rendition of songs belonging to different genres such as Blues, Rock and Jazz. While John Lennon created sensation with his songs such as ‘Working Class Hero’ and ‘Give Peace a chance’, Songs like ‘Wonderful Tonight’ by Eric Clapton and ‘Candle in the Wind’ by Elton John are considered to be one of the world’s best pieces of music.
The creative charm of English music has been sustained over generations and decades by the likes of “The Beatles”, “Queen”, “The Rolling Stones” in the 60′s, “Take That”, “Spice Girls” in the 90′s or likes of “One Direction”, the new breed of British Singers emerging out of reality show, and heartbeat of youngsters propelled by social media. They all have had an impact on Music lovers across the globe.
While talking of music festivals organised year round in the United Kingdom and the number of fans it attracts from across the globe, you have to mention about the Glastonbury Festival. The influence the English music festivals have been creating over the years is testimony from the fact that this year we have seen a surge in such music festivals in India. Likes of Sunburn , VH1Supersonic festival which are Trance and EDM inspired have been graced by recent performance of British EDM artist Above & Beyond. Even Tourism DIU is organizing an “Indian Curry Version” festival called #FestaDeDiu where a host of Indian Artist would perform from genres like Music, Dance, Arts, Theater and Comedy. Wish even I could be part of the festivals like the V Festival, Glastonbury Festival about which we have heard, seen and read so much that it will be dream come true to witness it live and keep singing.
I just wanna rock, DJ As you're making me feel so nice Please don’t stop, DJ Cause you're #MusicisGreat

The Music Of India
The music of India is regarded as one of the oldest in the world. Vedic chants are the oldest recorded examples of music in the world. The first documented reference to music was made by Panini in 500 BC.
India’s music is a co-synthesis of vocals, instruments and dance. The three combine to form what is termed as Sangeet. Sangeet was extremely popular in royal courts, temples, during celebrations and festivals, and in rural entertainment programs.
Classical indian music is based on system of scales or modes known as Ragas. The Gupta Period (early 4th to mid 8th century AD) is considered as the golden era of Indian Music. Till about the 13th century AD, there was essentially one central musical form in India. With the coming of the Mughals, the musical style blended Arabic and Persian influences into its fold, giving birth to Hindustani Music. With its flexibility of style and structure, this is a music of broad improvisations and brilliant virtuosity.
*A musical setting from yesteryears
Distinct form of Hindustani Music is Carnatic music, the music of Southern India, a genre that grew and developed independent from external influences. More orthodox, this is a music built around a great repertoire of pre-composed songs.
Both Hindustani and Carnatic music originated from Bharata’s Natyashastra - the two diverge only in 14th century AD.
Instruments employed in Indian music are the Tabla & Dholak (percussion), the sitar (long necked lute), the sarod (plucked/bowed fiddle), the veena (stringed lute with resonators), the flute (air blown instruments), the mridangam, the ghungroo, the sarangi and the tambura (drone lute).
*Renowned Tabla Player Ustad Allah Rakha Khan
*Shehnnai Maestro Ustad Bismillah Khan
*Taking Sitar to the world - Pandit Ravi Shankar ( Anoushka is daughter of Ravi Shankar and the half-sister of Norah Jones)
*Pandit Hari Prasad Chaurasia plays his flute with aplomb
* Pandit Bhimsen Joshi - Hindustani Classical Vocalist
Ustad Amzad Ali khan plays the sarod
Pandit Shiv Kumar Sharma has made Santoor popular worldwide
