What?: Article exploring the multiple facets of the generation defined as “millennials”.
Why?: Being part of this generation I am very much interested in how I am placed in a larger socio-political context. I think the idea of uncertainty regarding this generation is exciting. There obviously is a big gap between the previous generation and ourselves. How will society look when generation Y is the status quo.

What?: Collage of body parts made of jelly like material.
Why?: The body parts in the video have a very tactile feel to them. Upon trying to figure out why that is I realized that tactility has to do with showing the way a certain matter literally touches and reacts to other things. This allows us to empathize with it and experience “tactility”.

What?: commentary on contemporary society using rats as a metaphor.
Why?: Although this critical perspective on contemporary consumerist society has be stated and restated so much that I have an aversion towards it, the fact that it is made so well makes it once more attractive. What I take from this video is that it is not so relevant what you tell but how you tell it

what?: Specific cultural sensibilities of British nightlife.
why?: Coming from Eastern Europe where nightlife is both as colored and as specific to the region as it is in the UK, I think it is fascinating to trace certain habits to bigger phenomenon. For example why is ketamine so popular in British culture or why do we drink plastic bottle beer in apartment block entrances in Eastern Europe?

What?: The website of the North Korean government.
Why?: Most of North Koreans do not have access to a computer or the internet. Despite this the text on the website is addressed at North Koreans. Of course superficially it is absurd however as a propaganda strategy it is like whispering compliments about the person to your left to the person on your right but loud enough for the person on your left to hear you.

What?: Article about North Korean posters, how they are made and how they function in society.
Why?: First of all I find it interesting to think of the identity that a government wants to communicate through the “propaganda” material it produces. The highlight of this article for me was the contrast between how a poster is produced and what it expresses. The content of the poster is about a great, powerful nation while the process of making this poster tells the story of a poor nation. This could also apply to how we produce art. Is the process of making an artwork reflective or adding to what the artwork itself communicate? Furthermore, is the process reflected in the work?

What?: Material that behaves according to how it is structured instead of the quality of the material in itself.
Why?: I never realized that there are two ways to think of material and its functionality: How it is composed and how it is structured. I think this approach to material is anti-artistic. Normally all material communicates even before it has been given a form. If all material is the same, the only aspect left for us to communicate with will be the form.

What?: Cards against humanity is protesting Trump by making it as difficult as possible for him to build his wall. They do this by buying a piece of land on the border and hiring a team of lawyers to make building the wall a nightmare.
Why?: This article made me think about the nuances protest can take. Creative ways of protesting are something that I think would be interesting to explore, especially in my home country where currently there are many “traditional” protests being held.

What?: Article on the slavery that is linked with Bristols history and how a university that was funded by a slave owner should be renamed.
“History isn’t a reliable thing, it’s a narrative someone wants to tell.”
Why?: How should we think of the past? Is a building named after a slave owner celebrating him or making sure that we do not forget the past? Wouldn’t changing the name be detrimental in the sense that the traces of exploitation in the past would be covered? Or would it be a sign of freeing ourselves from the beliefs of the past?

Why?: Lovely poetic gesture. I think it encourages emotional vulnerability and a sense of togetherness in regards to us a society and our environment.

What?: The children of rich Chinese businessman are moving to Canada and buying expensive cars.
Why?: Firstly I think it is interesting to see how world economics and policies affect where people go and for what reason. Second it is a very interesting phenomenon how a typology, a character emerges from a certain background. In this case, rich Chinese teenagers in Vancouver buying expensive cars is a subculture, what other strange conditions have created other specific subcultures.

What?: Article explaining that overall free trade and neoliberalism has been to our benefit.
Why?: Although I do not necessarily agree with it free trade and neoliberalism it has actually benefited the overall well being of people around the world. Tim Worstall is a firm believer in this approach towards economic policy and from the perspective presented in the article, I can see why.

What?: An article from a slightly fashion oriented perspective about Christiania with a lovely selection of photographs.
Why?: I like the idea of sharing clothes as a metaphor for interconnectedness and an attempt at establishing a common identity because of common perspectives about life. From a political point of view I do think that many examples show that a balance between left and right wing works best.

What?: Article on the exponential growth of technological and scientific advancements and how they are going to facilitate the colonization of mars.
Why?: As the article states, we are finally at the point where the “giggle” factor is no longer present when speaking about colonizing other planets. What would life actually look like, what psychological and physiological effects could it have on us and how would someone born there perceive the world?
