When I was a child, there were many times when I'd find myself being yelled at by multiple people ganging up on me because apparently I did something rude, or maybe they just thought I did because they didn't care if they were misinterpreting.

And if I asked how what I did was rude, they took that as arguing and became even more aggressive. Even if I just sat there silently because I was stunned by how quickly and viciously they were attacking me, they took that as an argument too, especially if I "rolled my eyes" (which I don't even know what that means or what it looks like).

Then, I went to school and was taught that chewing with your mouth open or talking with your mouth full is rude. And since it always annoyed me when people did that, it felt good knowing that finally for once something that bothers me is considered rude.

Then, when my family chewed with their mouth open and talked with their mouth full, I just went off and yelled at them. After all, that's what I was taught that you're supposed to do when someone does something rude. And they were all dumbfounded. They still to this day don't know why I did that. They've suspected OCD.

I've since realized that they were never trying to logically inform me of what it means to be rude. They only wanted a monopoly on deciding what's rude.

When you're autistic and you lash out at people, everyone wonders why, even though it's a pretty much inevitable consequence of how you're treated. But no one notices when it's done to you. They only notice when you start doing it.
