excuse me for stating the obvious but like. james gunn outright calling superman an immigrant and doubling down on it when he got backlash (because he IS an immigrant, that's the point of superman) + the in-movie dialogue of "aren't you going to read me my rights?" "you're an extraterrestrial, son. you haven't got any rights to read." + the violence of his arrest and how they torture and mistreat him unapologetically, all under the guise of "protecting america", in a film releasing during the onslaught of violent ICE kidnappings and abuse... yeah it's really no wonder right-wing knobheads are crying about this being woke. they're being forced to look directly at the reasons one of the most well-known and beloved heroes of all time would not be on their side. and that's only ONE of the reasons this movie covers

Hello there Gracie. I'll add my own two cents since you've reblogged my post and you've tagged me in your answer to another ask. To the anon who sent you that ask, I want to say:

Fandom is a community. There is no community without communication between fans, and that includes interacting with writers through comments.

Us writers are storytellers, we write because we are passionate and have stories in our heads, but we post them to share our passion with other fans and contribute to keeping our community alive.

All we want to know is that someone is listening to those stories and we're not actually speaking into the void.

I'll add another layer to that, that many writers around me have noticed, which is that in recent times, readers frequently come into our inboxes and DMs making requests. Which is fine in itself, we're glad that people are interested in what we write, however...

There is a rise in demands in our inboxes, all the while there is a decline in engagement on our stories. People expect more of us while they are giving back less. See the issue?

You can't expect writers to keep pumping their souls into fandoms without giving them anything back. Communication is an exchange.

So do people write fic for their own happiness or for attention? Why do people care if fics get comments if they just write it for themselves?

i personally write for both, but more so i write for my followers, and i dont think thats a bad thing. i dont want to speak for anyone else but im not writing stuff for myself, i’m writing it for my followers because they like what i write and they deserve to read good stuff. its not solely for attention, but when you put a product out into the world for people to enjoy, it sucks when you dont hear any feedback from the people you made it for.

hotd fandom is dead so thats why fanfic writers arent getting comments

it’s not just the HOTD fandom though, i’ve been planning on releasing my robert reynolds x healer!f!reader (marvel fandom) for a while now but every time i go to post i just keep thinking how it’s going to flop and not get the attention it deserves. it’s really hard being proud of your work and not having people reciprocate that and instead just hearting it and saying nothing. it’s not just HOTD, it’s about fanfic writing in general.

i appreciate the hearts and reblogs as much as the next person, but @sylasthegrim is right, we do this FOR FREE, and in OUR FREE TIME. The least someone could do is leave a comment or even add their own hashtags to reblogs, just SOMETHING.

Why fanfic writers are disheartened.

My last oneshot is a perfect example. I posted it on Tumblr and on AO3, and over the two platforms, despite 560 likes and 130 hits, there is a total of four comments.

One of them is asking to be on my taglist (nothing wrong with that at all, it's the place to do so). One of them is someone tearing apart the last scene, saying it was rushed and didn't feel believable.

Only two of them are actually nice, encouraging comments about the fic.

Out of 690 people who have likely read my fic, only two people took the time to let me know they appreciated the work.

This oneshot was a request, because I often take requests from people, and write exactly what they want to read. It took about five hours for me to complete and was beta read by another person.

We do this for free, on our own free time, and while we often do it because we are passionate, it would be nice to get some encouragement and some appreciation.

We do this because we love the fandom(s) we’re in. We take the time to invest into them, so might you please take a bit of time to invest in your local fanfic writers?
