“ They’re both very socially awkward people, they have difficulty expressing themselves. But I think they are both in love with each other. They’re not people that are liked by everyone. They’re not good at expressing themselves, but Yuuji has boxing and Ichiko at the start of the film is at home a lot, that’s how they deal with their problems. I had the image of Rocky, if Adrian was the one boxing!, I sort of relate Adrian with Ichiko. That was always in my mind when making the film. “ Director Masaharu Take

“ The tension in existing between the banal and the serious; the wide spectrum of life, of existence. For me, there are three themes that are the most important. One is the lack of empathy, which is a very bad thing – especially nowadays – as it shows an increasing lack of respect. Vulnerability is also one of my themes. I am so sad if I see vulnerable people being humiliated. Humiliation is also a theme that preoccupies me.
It is about life. I have seen it and I have experienced such situations. Sometimes, life is very common, banal and not very interesting. Sometimes it is very interesting, fascinating and also frightening. I really love this mixture, and I also love mixing up time. In this movie, there are a lot of anachronisms, blending the past and our time. I am happy to dare to do it because earlier I was more realistic. But after 15 years, I was so tired and felt daring enough to leave realism and move into abstraction. “ Director Roy Andersson

“ The original idea came from an image: the flowers that we sometimes see on the roadside which have been left in remembrance of someone who’s lost their life in that place in a traffic accident. It’s a dramatic image, one that everyone recognises. But it’s also a very mysterious one as you generally don’t see the person who puts the flowers there; you see they’re renewed regularly but never actually see anyone do it or, indeed, know who does it. So, we asked ourselves, what would happen if the family or friends of the person who had lost their life in such a way were to discover that somebody anonymous was leaving flowers at the place of the accident? That was the origin of one of the plots. The film has two main plots. The one just mentioned comes up later on, and the first one springs from the song A bouquet of violets”, where a woman receives flowers from an anonymous person. In this film there’s also a woman (Ane), who starts to receive flowers every week but she doesn’t know who the sender is. In both plots we play with the same element: there are some mysterious flowers, there’s someone who’s excited by them, and there’s someone who perceives the flowers as a threat. We liked the game of mirrors between both these plots and how one is the consequence of the other. “ Director José Mari Goenaga

“ The idea was actually born from watching television. On German television, there are these docushows in which some women are separated from their families for three months in order to change their looks in a radical way, including through plastic surgery. These women are usually not considered pretty according to society’s standards, so the purpose of the show is to make them more beautiful. When they come back after those three months, there is this moment at which they get to show their new physical appearance to their relatives and friends. It’s supposed to be like a big red-carpet television moment, a very happy moment. However, if you look closely at the children, if there are any, you can always see some kind of uneasiness or distress in their faces. Even after we had already shot the film, there was an episode in which a child said, “That is not my mum.” He was really scared. So that is where we got the idea from. “ Director Severin Fiala
