i was reading today and character A was afraid to let character B lift them because they thought they were too heavy but then character B is just super strong and it isn’t a problem and that simply got me thinking about arthur having some kind of magical phoenix strength and carrying linus bridal style to and from random places <33

y'all can tell me whatever you want but you CANNOT tell me, if only it hadn't shut down, that the house in the cerulean sea wouldn't have made an AMAZING BLUESKY STUDIOS MOVIE
(the same animation studio that made ice age and rio)

I've been listening to the somewhere beyond the sea audiobook and of course it's an absolute delight.
But i just got to the scene where arthur reaches his breaking point and this scene was already gut-wrenching enough when i was reading the physical copy. but the delivery on "They're trying to take my children from me!" makes it absolutely devastating
I owe the narrator my life. I've been sobbing for five minutes.

On today's episode of Somewhere Beyond the Sea quotes that make me go absolutely feral:
The fire came, then, the phoenix rising with a piercing cry. Flames overtook Arthur, but they did not burn Phee. They could never. He was hers, and she was his.

ok so headcannon that phoenixes are sort of shape-shifters. they have evolved to appear human over dozens and dozens of generations. their natural way of being is to burn, but they've learned that the best way to seek connection and companionship is to adopt a human looking body. Arthur Parnassus doesn't know this. no one taught him how to be a phoenix in a boy's body.
in the book, he said he couldn't control the fire when he was younger. it took him a lot of time and grueling effort to quel his flames and keep them tampered down. so to continue the headcannon, Arthur's skin is constantly crawling. the horrible, consuming itchiness has plagued him ever since he was a teenager. it's still there in his forties, but most of the time, it's like white noise to him. of course some days are better than others. there are days when he can barely move without feeling thousands of needle-legged insects scuttle over him, raking his nerves with pain. he needs so badly to burn, but he has to think of the children. it's always about the children. so he swallows it down like he does with everything else and pushes forward. after all, it could be worse, he tells himself.

Linus Baker disliked himself and had a depressing view of life but Arthur and the children still fell in love with him and I absolutely love that bc it crushes the idea that you have to first love yourself or be healed in some way before other people can love you.

Without a second thought, Linus reached up and cupped Arthur’s face. His skin was hot, but Linus wasn’t afraid of being singed and blackened. Arthur would never allow it. The fire tickled against the backs of his hands. “There, there,” Linus said quietly. “That’s enough of that, I think. You’ve made your point quite well.” - The House in the Cerulean Sea
I love a good desperate face grab - some excellent face holding in this book!
