I don't mean this in any jokey or disrespectful way; is there any truth to the alchemy in say, the Full Metal Alchemist anime? The symbols or transmutation circles?
Actually the author of FMA did a ton of research into historical western alchemy. The whole law of equivalent exchange is a real alchemical concept from hermetica, and one that sir Issac Newton expounded into the law of thermodynamics.
The elrics dad, Van Hoenhiem, is based on a real alchemist named Theophrastus Bombastus Von Hoenhiem. At one point Pride even references the real alchemists name.
Basically everything about alchemy in FMA is taken from primary sources, down to the symbology of transmutation circles to the color scheme of Edwards design.

im almost done ranting about Robin #5 but just hear me out. These panels hit me hard because I feel like they are so inherently Dick Grayson that it shooketh me to the core.
Dick begins to approach Damian, and you might think he is going in for a hug. I think it’s safe to say a good majority of us prior to the release of this issue thought the promised hug was going to be between Dick and Damian, not Jason and Damian.
But then instead he goes for a hand on the shoulder at a comfortable distance.
And this is so much better than a hug for Damian, because it shows that, while the two of them are apart, with physical distance between them, Dick’s hand is still right there on his shoulder. A comforting reminder that he will always be with him when he needs him, but that he isn’t going to lock him into place with an embrace.
Because that’s exactly what Dick needed all those years ago when he tried to get away from Batman and the Robin mantle. He’d needed space but also someone who supported him taking that space. Bruce pushed him away harshly. Dick would never take that route with Damian. He respects that he needs to go off and do his own things.
Not only that, but he encourages it. His entire relationship with Damian is based on everything he lacked with Bruce. Because of this, I think Dick and Damian have the strongest partnership out of anyone in the Batfamily, and I will always hold true to this. No one understands each other so inherently as they do.
Dick knows Damian will do the right thing, and he knows he’ll return to his side when he can and wants to. He’ll never stop him from doing what he thinks he needs to do, and that wasn’t his intention of this little visit. His only intention was to make sure Damian was reminded of all that, and he was.
Now Damian holds a little bit of Dick with him through the remainder of this tournament, even when they are apart. Because they are partners. Because they will always and forever support each other unequivocally. Because they were and always will be the Batman and Robin (2009) ®.

My little brother had recommended over and over again Chainsaw man and I did told him I was going to read it but didn't know when, the trailer came out and yep that time had come. lol.
If you haven't read it I suggest you to skip this "review" ... I guess...
First of all, it's short. 97 chapter. I'm guessing it's the trend nowadays, quality over quantity kind of like Kimetsu no Yaiba. Not only in it been short but being straightforward, the mangaka did gave us some chapters in between to breath but they were still pretty much part of the plot and necessary to see how they adapt after each mission.
I'm very awared I did grew up watching Disney and also picking shounen that where wholesome and part of the plot was the power of friendship. So every now and then that I read manga such as this, my brain has a hard time trying to process all the blood and death. Don't get me wrong, this story was very interesting. I'm also very grateful that I read it once it was over, one tend to empathize or connect with characters the longer it takes you to read it. By that I mean when you made space to read each new chapter every Friday or Sunday night to see what they're up to.
So yes, lots of blood, lots of death of characters you knew they had it coming but somehow still had hope for their end to be slightly different.
The main protagonist is a 16year old hormonal boy who knows what it is to had nothing and at the same time to dream of a time where he can at least have breakfast and a girlfriend. Yes, hormonal. I understand his reasoning behind, the boy had no idea what loves mean or to be cared for other than his demon dog "pochita". Who he spends most of his time talking about his dream or what he would like his life to be, not that he is expecting any of that happening on this lifetime. Denji is always reminding Pochita that when time comes if its necessary he can take his body as a vessel. He had hear demons can do that, and at very least he would like for someone to complete his dream of having bread with jam as breakfast. The thing about dreams and having no standards when it comes to creating connections with others or building a life is that your bound to get treated like trash sometimes. Because you yourself feels like its true and things could be worse...
It was fast pace, the one who were shady turn out to feel like that for a reason. The image the mangaka created for demons, all of them being so different and still truth to the fears represented. Like I would had never thought of that but I'm sure most of us who read it and saw them immediately could understand that image the demons had taken.
Also the idea of love Denji had thinking it could only happen with a romantic partner in a sexual way, how it change as time pass and confused him a lot was really nice to see. He still a boy who had never go to school or socialize with others around his age, he isn't awared that family comes in different ways. You don't need a girlfriend to feel loved and not every girl should be consider a romantic prospect.

The ease of nudity in Finland is something I'm super jealous of, I think it also promotes people being comfortable in their own body, if body's aren't so sexualized and taboo. The only bodies i really saw were in movies, and indeed kids changing on the beach or baby's in diapers. I'm not even from the USA, the Netherlands, so close yet so different!
I think you’re right - while I have of course met Finns who are deeply uncomfortable in their own bodies and unhappy about being seen, the absolutely constant, default, “this is considered healthy actually” cultural background radiation of “nudity is always a precursor to sex! nudity is always a precursor to sex!” in many other places does really do a special kind of damage to people’s psyche.
I always think of one of my co-workers at a husky farm near Inari, who told me apropos of nothing while we were clearing out dog shit together that he thought the reason Americans are “like that” (“like what, Veikka” got the response “you know what I mean”) is because “they never see their grandma’s tits.” His logic was that “in Finland, you go to the sauna with your grandma from when you’re a baby, and you see her naked, and this is years and years before you ever see any porn, so you know before you see any of it that it’s temporary and fake. And when you get a girlfriend later, you know it’s only a matter of time before her tits look like that too, you accept this. And Americans don’t know that! They don’t! They look at porn, and then they get a wife, and then they’re surprised and bitter when she gets old - it’s true!”
Like, to be clear, I think Veikka’s analysis might have been missing more than a bit of nuance, this is the same guy whose motto was “Driving 600km south to Rovaniemi to get therapy is expensive, chopping wood till you don’t care about it anymore is free”, but I do occasionally still look at some British or American take online and think to myself, in his voice, “they’ve never seen their grandma’s tits”

There’s no such thing as a painless lesson. They just don’t exist. Sacrifices are necessary. You can’t gain anything without losing something first. Although, if you can endure that pain and walk away from it, you’ll find you now have a heart strong enough to overcome any obstacle - a heart made fullmetal.

So I discover fma when I was in 5th grade, the first anime I was actually aware that it was an anime. Later on I read the manga, I was 14. Eventually I watch the brotherhood version which is basically the manga. Beautifully animated, I was around 16. Now I'm 24 and its so interesting re reading it again after so many years. FMA has always been one of those stories that if someone were to ask me "fav anime" I don't have to think twice. It followed me through my entire teenagehood to my young adults days. Even now I think about and the story is THAT good.
This is actually my second time reading it, I was apprehensive at first because what if the me from now, no longer finds it interesting. What if my childish brain idealized the story? First it was the shock of it only being 108 chapter. I don't know why but I though it was longer than that. It was exciting to think that in a couple of night I would be done with it... This time I wanted to be extra focus on their age and how time passed in the story, to me back then from one day to another he was all grown up. Ed and Al used to be older than me, and I though they were the coolest boys ever. But now I'm older than them, it was weird because Ed was my first conscious 2D crush and now everytime they get in trouble or something happen my first reaction was "my boysssss T^T " "my kids!"
So yes, this time I could tell the slightest change on Ed physically and even manage to be aware how old he was by the end of it. Before the 2 year time skip. Also... it was more interesting to read about Mai and Alphonse, also Winry as they were all around the same age. To be honest I'm really grateful I encounte a story such as this back then, the women portrayed in this manga are all so different yet so powerful. And have in it a strength that isn't exactly just a portrayel of one way of being feminine/useful/strong or even important to the timeline of the story. They all have unique qualities that as a child show me how good it was for me to be who I was. Although, let's be real I wanted to be Edward... always felt envious on how easily it was for him to concentrate when reading or how quick he was to react. And I also wanted alphonse techniques in fighting but thinking about it... if I would want anybody fighting skill it would be mai's.
Dunno... this is just me reminiscing and also on a trip of re reading mangas I read when I was 14/15.
