I started sketching another illustration for a social media post or banner, featuring one of the makeup products from her line. The design showcases Liu Jin Xian alongside the product, emphasizing the connection between her character and the brand’s aesthetic. The product reflects her heritage, with coin-shaped packaging and elegant detailing, blending seamlessly with her overall look and style. This illustration aims to highlight both her story and the unique qualities of her waterproof makeup line.
Overall, I'm quite content with how the character design turned out. The blend of traditional Chinese elements with a modern, Harajuku-inspired style has given Liu Jin Xian a unique and visually striking look that aligns well with her backstory and personality. The attention to details like her teal color palette, red eyes, and symbolic accessories really brought the character to life, and I feel the final design reflects both her elegance and mystical charm perfectly.

Final Character Design
I decided to move away from the chibi look and opted for a more grown-up, elegant design for the character. To maintain a balance, I gave her a neutral yet friendly expression, keeping her approachable and cute. I also chose to scrap the idea of a sidekick, as I realized it didn’t align well with her backstory and overall character concept.
I stuck with the green color palette, but also introduced a shade of dark blue to create a teal tone overall. The outfit features lotus and wavy patterns, maintaining the connection to her heritage and powers. I gave her a traditional bun hairstyle as her default look, adding elegance and simplicity. Her red eyes symbolize the same vibrant hue as the red eyes of the three-legged toad from mythology. To give her a distinctive feature, I added a mole on her chin, adding character and uniqueness to her design.

I was particularly inspired by the intricate details and artistry found in traditional Chinese makeup products and packaging. These references helped me shape a look that feels both modern and culturally rooted, reflecting the character's heritage while fitting the Harajuku fashion theme. The intricate detailing in traditional cosmetics became a guide for balancing elegance and boldness in the product design

Inspired by the elegance of the Hanfu, I decided to reimagine it with a contemporary twist, incorporating bold colors, intricate patterns, and layered fabrics to give it a more playful, street-style edge. By modernizing the Hanfu with elements from Harajuku subcultures like Decora and Lolita, I aim to merge the grace of Chinese tradition with the vibrant, creative energy of the theme
I wanted to integrate traditional Chinese patterns like the lotus, symbolizing purity, and waves, representing her control over water and rain. These motifs add depth to her character, connecting her back to her mystical origins. I also chose a color palette dominated by shades of green, symbolizing growth and prosperity, with accents of gold accessories to represent wealth and fortune, in line with the Chan Chu mythology. This blend of symbolic elements with modern fashion creates a unique fusion of heritage and contemporary style
I also incorporated playful accessories to highlight her connection to the Chan Chu mythology, such as a cute frog chain hanging from her hair stick and gold coins tied to her belt, symbolizing wealth and good fortune.

BACKSTORY - LIU JIN XIAN
Jin Lian was born into a family with deep roots in ancient Chinese sorcery. Her family, the Liu clan, had been guardians of an ancient temple dedicated to the Chan Chu, the mythical three-legged frog known to bring wealth, fortune, and protection from misfortune. The Liu family was respected for their knowledge of herbal medicine, cosmetics, ancient rituals, and connection to the spiritual world.
Raised in a small village, she grew up learning ancient rituals from her grandmother, a powerful sorceress. One day, she discovered the statue of the Chan Chu in the family temple and was chosen by the frog spirit, granting her powers to control rain, summon luck, and protect others. Her grandmother warned her to use her powers wisely, and responsibly.
Unlike her family’s devotion to tradition, Jin Xian was fascinated by modern fashion, makeup, and trends. Growing up, she often blended traditional beauty secrets with her own contemporary styles. She dreamed of merging her family’s ancient beauty wisdom with the trends of the modern world. Her family, however, was more cautious, wanting to remain traditional and avoid the complications of modernization.
Her grandmother finally revealed a family secret: the Liu clan had once served as royal advisors, but centuries ago, they were betrayed by a jealous court official who accused them of practicing dark magic. The betrayal led to their exile from the capital, forcing them to live quietly in the countryside. Jin Xian felt it was time to not only restore her family’s honor but also to bring their ancient cosmetics into the modern world. She believed that by modernizing the family business, she could both reclaim their legacy and fulfill her passion for fashion and beauty.
Determined to grow the family business, Jin Xian left her village and traveled to Tokyo, specifically Harajuku, the center of bold fashion, creative expression, and beauty trends.
One rainy night, while observing a street fashion show in Harajuku, the downpour ruined many contestants’ makeup. Jin Xian, using her rain-controlling powers, created a dry path for herself, and this sparked the idea for "Chan Chu Beauty"—a line of waterproof makeup inspired by her mystical powers and traditional beauty recipes. Her products, shaped like gold coins, symbolize fortune and resilience, blending her heritage with the trends of the modern world.

As per the feedback I got from Irushi, I realized that I needed more writing and development related to Liu Jin's backstory, how she grew up, what kind of family background does she have, how did she get into cosmetics etc. i decided to try free writing and let my thoughts run soar.

MORE BRAINSTORMING
According to my lecturer's input, I should consider more about her background and why she's attending the fashion show. In addition, I was instructed to conduct further research on clothes design.
I had an idea to base this character on a product mascot or ambassador. And, since fashion and cosmetics go hand in hand, and makeup is a big component in Harajuku fashionistas, I'm thinking I could make my character the ambassador of a makeup brand, with her role being to introduce and promote the brand during the fashion show.
These are a few pictures that inspired me on how to build the character promoting her cosmetic line. Given her heritage as a three-legged frog and a line of sorcerers, I thought it would be more fitting if she created water-resistant makeup instead of regular makeup. That is why she summoned rain during the fashion show, and it is possible that most of the fashionistas' and audiences' makeup washed away as a result of the downpour, and she is there to market her makeup line.

CHARACTER BACKSTORY AND ENTRANCE
According to the brief, the story was a fashion show in which every kind of harajuku fashionista paraded down the ramp. However, just before to the judges announce the winner, another participant enters, drawing attention from the audience.
So, I imagined my character walking in during an unexpected, heavy downpour of rain. Which was also through her ability to control rain and water.
Origin - JIN LIU
I chose the name Jin Liu for my character because of the tale involving Liu Hai, a Chinese minister in the tenth century, and the three-legged Toad that is said to have given him fortune and wealth.
In my imagination, Jin Liu is descended from Liu hai and comes from a long line of sorcerers.

DEVELOPMENT SKETCHES
I started drawing the character as I imagined it in my mind. I wanted her outfits to have some reference to traditional Chinese clothing, but with a hint of cutesiness to fit the Harajuku theme. She has the same shade of red in her eyes as the toad. She holds a lotus leaf stem which also serves as a weapon during battles.
In order to develop a compelling character, I then jotted down a few points to determine her character traits.
Cunning, strategic, and resourceful. Always has a plan and knows how to use her abilities to her advantage.
Has a habit of flicking her fingers as if flipping a coin when thinking deeply or plotting.
Can manipulate wealth and fortune, directing it to herself or others as she sees fit.
Enhances or diminishes the luck of people she interacts with, making her a powerful ally or a formidable opponent.
Has the ability to summon rain and control water

ARTSTYLE REFERENCES AND INSPIRATION
Inspired by the chan chu toad, I want to create a character that has a little frog as a sidekick as well.
I drew inspiration for the character from a few of these pictures. I pictured the character as a chibi, or just a little bit taller than a chibi, to emphasize the cutesy, loli vibes I was aiming for.

CONCEPTUALIZATION I
I wanted to attempt designing outfits that was based on my personal favorite animals, frogs and ducks. Ducks were a little difficult, and I also wanted to attempt to connect these two creatures to a theme of mythology or folklore. I then came across something that I was already familiar with. It was the Chinese three-legged toad, also referred to as the money toad. I wanted to base my character on this.
WHAT IS THE STORY OF THE MONEY FROG?
Chan Chu (Ch'an Chu) or "Three-legged Money Frog" is a popular Chinese symbol of prosperity. According to Feng Shui this frog wards off evil spirits and it can help you in the rise of your income.
Liu Hai represents prosperity and wealth to the Chinese. He was a government official and alchemist in ancient China who befriended a three-legged toad. According to the story, every time the toad jumped into a well he returned with a gold coin.

WHAT IS HARAJUKU FASHION STYLE?
Harajuku Fashion refers to a wide variety of Japanese fashion styles and aesthetics originating in the Harajuku, neighborhood of Tokyo's commercial Shibuya district. The neighborhood has been famous for its history and reputation as the alternative fashion hub of Japan, and has a decades long history of creating many trendy and popular styles and subcultures domestically and internationally.
Harajuku Fashion is famous for being often very decorative, colorful, and attention-grabbing. Sanrio characters are popular. Lighter styles include Kawaii, Decora, and Lolita, as well as the subgenres of these and other popular styles. Darker styles are also included in Harajuku fashion: Gothic Lolita and dark western alt are part of its fashion too, as well as some styles influenced by Visual Kei. The intention is to be as self-expressive as one desires, incorporating a culture of free expression.
As per the guidelines in the brief, we are free to select any theme for character design. For instance, tech, folklore, fairytales, mythology, cyberpunk, and fantasy.
There must be just one primary character, and we are free to create them a sidekick as well.
