you watch a barking beast lean over your friend (sharp-toothed himself, a pretty thing) and something bright and ugly twists itself into shape within your chest.

you watch the barking beast curve itself into a threat and find a mirror for more than you'd prefer. it looms like a shadow of everything you wish, of power and danger and the ability to hold the pretty thing's attention with but a glance.

predator eyes meet yours, the same ugly truth you feel around your heart sitting behind them like a dare.

you watch it reach out, watch it touch the pretty thing with beastly hands. it pushes close to where you ought to be. thin fingers mar beautiful skin. the mess inside roars, grows up your throat with vines and thorns.

the pretty thing huffs, pulls back its lips for a snarl; it does not shift its eyes away, canine and unwilling to bow down. a dog, lying in wait for command. such a pretty thing, indeed.

the barking beast smiles. there is sinew between its teeth, blood atop its tongue.

you and it. sharp bark and ugly, twisted mess. your pretty thing, somewhere inbetween, eyes locked still with the beast.

like recognises like.
