Final project proposal
"Eyes through the walls" (very much a working project name)
Project Description: In my final project I want to capture the life that only a fly on the wall would see. I feel that a person can experience some of the best and worst times in their room. All of the shots will be in my own room, showing the different events that take place in the space. I want these photographs to range from trivial tasks like getting ready for work to more intimate moments like sharing a deep conversation with a friend. I want the pictures to feel raw, including clothes on the floor or cups on the bedside table, but also capturing those moments where you feel put together with a perfectly tidy room. Ultimately I want to capture the moments that feel insignificant, that no one else sees except the walls of your room, that make you, you. For this project I am drawing a lot of inspiration from Nina Leen, in her time she mainly shot for LIFE magazine. I love her style, in my project I want to carry over the vintage and warm feeling her photos convey. Many of her projects seemed to just capture the daily life of people giving insight into how others live. I also plan to keep my images in black in white the same way Nina Leen’s pictures were in, I think negating color will make it easier to focus on the message.
Outcomes: I expect to produce eight images that will be viewed online. Due to the nature of the online class they will not have to be printed.
Methods and Materials: I will be using a digital camera to capture the images. This is different than my reference as Leen used a Rolleiflex TLR camera. Another obstacle is that I don’t have many people who would be able to model so I think many, if not all, pictures will be self portraits. I do think this adds another dimension to the project but it is not my main intention, or vision. Other materials that will probably be needed is a tripod and a self timer.

Assignment 1:
The artist I chose is David Sims. His work is mainly fashion photography. The extremely posed nature fashion photography implies makes Sims images stand out in comparison due to their natural qualities. His images feel angsty but not without purpose. I like the 'grungy' energy most of his works have. His photos show a glow, and beauty without abandoning the natural quality the original model or object has. I like how his pictures flow, there doesn't feel to be a pause. I like how his works feel candid regardless of the editorial context most of them have. His photos make what would have been a typical forced advertising campaign feel free and elastic, each playing differently with sharpness, depth, exposure and finish.
