Install shot from the Sedimentary Text Exchange, my installation at We Are Made Of Star Stuff which happened in back in March @hoxton253_artprojectspace Think I learned a lot from this - it’s so funny how when you make stuff and you have ideas it seems like literally the Best Thing In The World™️, then when you look at it ‘finished’ you are like.. what is this??? I was very grateful to be given the opportunity by @bertazub to explore these ideas in what turned out to be (in my opinion) kinda a clumsy way. You are welcome to think what you like about this work - I know a lot of people had good things to say about it, and I definitely liked it, but for me it represents a very overengineered rough sketch or planogram for a grouping of ideas that perhaps weren’t all needed in the same place, or necessarily in this particular manifestation. And that is totally cool! Project spaces like this are very important for giving artists opportunities to test stuff out and be *unpolished* and *unprofessional* I threw a lot of refined and unrefined ideas at this, and I don’t hate it, I just now see all the things it wasn’t. That’s such a great thing and a privilege I have. Trying not to turn this into a brain-spill.. but yeah - honesty is all I got bébé 😎!! Failure doesn’t exist!! Everything you make is important! HELLO Thought you might like to see some pics from the workshop I did for @hoxton253_artprojectspace as part of We Are Made Of Star Stuff, back in March, curated by @bertazub It was such a lovely morning. Getting a load of magazines out and just getting to work chopping, tearing, folding, rolling and sticking was what we all needed that day I think (was defo what I needed). Magazines and newspapers are an infinite resource - all kinds of images and text layered and butting up against each other across pages, stacked and bound, organised by subject, by date, by audience, disseminated to shops and homes, containing combinations of information unique to a particular time - ready for us to dismantle and reassemble and produce our own meanings/nonsense “Considering geological time requires an ability to visualise layering in the Earth, of time passing, and of materials being moved and rearranged. Through collage we experimented and explored the 'geology' of images and text” I’m working on some new work at the moment continuing these ideas and helping with preparations for the KS75 celebrations @merzbarn this summer. When I was first roped into co-leading @merziety with @laingtateart at RCA i couldn’t have known how important Schwitters’ work would become in the way I teach and learn about art. Infinitely grateful for the introduction. Got to visit the original Merz Barn Wall at @hatton_newcastle recently which was a treat. Detail here from my work Sedimentary Text Exchange - an installation which includes a tabletop ‘library’ of texts ruminating on the accretion & displacement of matter, inner & outer landscapes, deep time thinking & lived memory. The paperweights can be touched and moved about on the table to access the texts. You can keep it, pass it to a friend, make a sculpture, draw on it, burn it or recycle it. Mail it to your local MP. Soon I want to write something about failure because end of last year I just finished(?) a project that went really wrong in so many ways and ended up dead in the water. It made me feel like absolute pure shit! I’ll write that sometime this year but for now, please enjoy some unedited and uncropped drawing/writings which I literally did just now.
