I keep thinking of Gideon not even being able to conceive the possibility that Harrow could love her. not just harrow, but anyone really. the closest she had to love was aiglamene on the ninth. she's been deprived of love and comfort her whole entire life, so she's sooo in denial about harrow feeling any grief or pain for her that she deflects it like "yeah she's in love with the dead girl in the tomb 🙄"

It's an odd thing. Realizing that your feelings aren't what you thought they were. That bubbling, ceaseless tightness gripping your heart in a vice isn't what you originally appraised it as.

When you see her, and your tongue gets heavy and your brain gets hazy. When she makes crass jokes that you can't laugh at because you don't know how.

Because everybody's watching, and they're all expecting you to behave a certain way. So you behave the way you're expected to, you berate her and put her down.

But you don't mean it, your heart isn't in it. And worst of all, you think she knows that you're holding back. But how can you not hold back now that you understand?

How can you not hold back, when you dream of her every night? When you hear her and your heart leaps up against the back of your teeth, how can you tell her that she's worth less than dirt?

And then you're off world. You're away from all the prying eyes of your people. Your underlings. It's just you and her in the vastness of space and you feel like you're going to violently throw up all of your organs.

That feeling is only partially because there's no death juice up here.

It's an odd thing when you don't know what to do, unsupervised and wanting. Wanting, but not knowing how to obtain. It's strange when you covet something you've pretended to hate for so long, when you lied to yourself about your feelings for most of your life.

Live forever so that you might just see the other woman wake up? Or, choose the living, breathing moron who actually holds your heart in her calloused hand?

What do you do, when you're fraught with worry. Wracked with guilt over using her cell brazenly? Will she hate you? Will she resent what you had to do?

It's an odd thing, to watch, helpless as she goes. As she stands on the precipice, you've said what you can say as clearly as you're capable.

It's the end. You cannot win, and you knew it so you said it. You wanted to say it before it was too late. And she... she feels some way too.

But it's too late. You're bleeding and powerless to stop her from declaring her loyalty to your house at long last.

And dying.
