68- La Befana, The Christmas Witch

From Italian folklore, La Befana is an old witch who represents the New Year. A figure who has many characteristics in common with St. Nicholas and Santa Claus, Befana’s existence predates the popularization of the latter throughout Rome and Italy. She travels Italy on the night of Epiphany Eve (January 5th), flying through the sky on her broom. She is depicted as an old hag with a elongated nose, the typical Halloween style witch. Befana differs from her October sisters, however, in that she carries a large bag of presents and candy that she distributes to the children of Italy.

The mythology surrounding Befana is quite interesting, as she was seemingly inserted into the Biblical narrative of Christ. As the story goes, the Three Wise Men were on the way to the baby Jesus, and stopped at Befana’s house. Known to be the best housekeeper around, she invites them in and puts them up for the night. The following day, they invite her to visit Jesus, but she declines. Upon the realization that she has missed a great opportunity, Befana rushes to catch up with the Wise Men, but fails. She spends the rest of her life searching for the baby Jesus carrying presents and gifts for him as the Wisemen had done.

Fast forward several centuries, and Befana’s story is surprisingly familiar and immediately recognizable. On Epiphany Eve (from which Befana allegedly derives her name), she flies to the houses of all the children with her bag of gifts, still looking for Jesus. She is usually depicted as covered in soot, as she accesses their homes via the chimney. Befana brings the good children presents and candy, and not surprisingly, the bad children garlic, onions, or even a lump of coal. Using her broom, Befana sweeps the house as she’s leaving, representing the removal of the previous year’s problems and messes. As if this wasn’t enough, the children of course leave Befana wine and food (much better than milk).

What is a witch like this doing around Christmas, especially in such a religious city as Rome? It has been suggested that Befana is descended from earlier Roman deities, whose worship was maintained by a newly Christianized populace. While this is uncertain, she has many characteristics of pagan deities, namely Strenua, who was a Goddess of the New Year. Regardless, the Catholic masses of Italy would not have knowingly maintained her story, had it not been merged with Christian mythology. While her tradition was not widespread outside of Italy, she does significantly predate Santa within Rome, who only saw his popularization in the last several decades. Whatever her history, she is certainly a whimsical addition to Christmas and New Year traditions.

Aquarius: The Water Bearer

Aquarius is the 11th sign of the Zodiac & it is a Fixed Air sign. It marks the dead of winter. Aquarius is ruled by Uranus and is associated with the 11th house of friendships & wishes. The sign is connected to the human circulatory system and ankles. The sign is opposed by Leo. The Sun transits through Aquarius from approximately January 20-February 18.

Aquarius is symbolized by the Water Bearer. In earlier times, the sign was symbolized by a wine bearer. Regardless, the symbol of the sign depicts a human providing a gift to the world, flowing freely and equally to everybody and everything. The substance that is flowing out of the vase can represent truth, opportunity, acceptance, or intellectualism. The actual glyph for the sign is two jagged lines directly atop each other; depicting the substance flowing freely from the bearer’s vase, or it can depict the human ankles in motion, which is the part of the body that Aquarius is commonly associated with. Symbolically, the rigid, jagged, and unbroken lines represent electricity, universal thought, and futuristic wisdom.

Since Aquarius is the Zodiac’s sole Fixed Air sign, the sign is very progressive, assertive, independent, and original. This is the sign of the inventor, but because of this, they often find themselves in the trap of having firm opinions and beliefs, which leads to them acting like they know everything just because they have their own inventive take on it. It’s very hard to get an Aquarius to change their mind on something once they’ve found their own way to go about things. Aquarius as whole is a very polarizing sign, because though they are some of the most brilliant and genius inventors, they’re so stubborn and even arrogant at times that it’s hard to take them seriously or find any reason to listen to them. Despite all of this, I find Aquarius very fascinating. Being ruled by the erratic planet Uranus, the sign is very individualistic and is easily the most humanitarian sign of the twelve. Aquarius is very passionate about issues that concern the whole world and natives tend focus more on the larger issues that the world is facing but remain detached in their own personal relationships. An Aquarius is more likely to offer you logical ways to solve a problem than offer emotional support (depending on the rest of their chart).

Almost every Aquarius has a superiority complex of some sort in AT LEAST one aspect of their lives. Even if they don’t admit or even recognize it, they’ll always act like they’re the main bitch of the operation in one or more aspects of their lives. They love being intellectuals. Another thing they often take pride in is their eccentricity and individualism. Something that often gets overlooked about this sign too often though is that it’s essentially a less emotional version of Pisces. Aquarius is so concerned with the greater scheme of things and trying to promote change in the world that natives often lose themselves or don’t truly know who they are.

As I mentioned earlier, many Aquarius natives have one or two aspects of their lives that they take great pride in, but often, they use that one, solitary aspect just to overcompensate for what they’re lacking in their lives. Say that an Aquarius is very passionate about politics; they’ll fight up and down to promote political change in the name of the people, but then the native is challenged with going inward to examine other aspects of their lives. The native is confused and lost, most likely. This is because they’ve somewhat dug themselves into a hole with this solitary aspect of their lives and they’ve not yet worked on everything else that makes them…a person! Aquarius is where the Sun, the human ego, is in detriment, because it’s the zodiac’s most precarious ego. That’s why Aquarius’ get compared to aliens so often; it’s because they forget how to be humans. This sign is so humanitarian, but they themselves often forget how to take a breath and allow themselves to live for once.

At work, Aquarius enjoys working with a group, variety, and creative projects. It’s very rare that an Aquarius will enjoy a typical 9-5, routine-type job. The Aquarian employer will be fair and treat/pay everybody equally, giving everyone their fair share. They’re the type of boss to give their employees all of the rope they need, even if it means hanging themselves. They won’t forgive dishonesty and have a dislike for the typical expectations of a boss; they’ll take the company above and beyond all expectation. As an employee, Aquarius is rather aloof but attracts lots of friends. They’ll be the type of employee to do more than what’s expected of them and are often the types of employees to truly push a company to greatness because they bring a fresh and unique approach to any task. Common occupations for Aquarius natives would be independent business ownership, music, engineering, and philanthropic work.

In love, Aquarius attracts people easily because of their friendly and aloof demeanor, but they’re afraid of deep emotional attachment and involvement. They need a partner who will give them their space. Aquarius will fiercely guard their independence and enjoys a relationship where commitment happens after a friendship is established and secure. In return, they expect complete understanding and loyalty. Clinginess, jealousy, and possessiveness is an immediate turn off for an Aquarius. This sign is most compatible with Pisces, Gemini, Capricorn, Sagittarius, and Aries.

The Constellation

Aquarius lies in a portion of the sky that is commonly referred to as the Sea, and is neighbored by Pisces, Eridanus, Cetus, and Capricornicus. The constellation was catalogued by Greek astronomer Ptolemy in the 2nd century. The constellation is home to a supergiant star (Beta Aquarii), the Saturn Nebula, and the Helix Nebula. It’s the 10th largest constellation. The four meteor showers that are associated with Aquarius are the March Aquariids, Eta Aquariids, Delta Aquariids, and Iota Aquariids.

these were originally going to be just more colours for my souk eyes v2 but then i got carried away and ended up just kinda,, remaking them. as my style changed i needed new style of eyes and so here u go ! and this time it includes both pet eyes and mermaid eyes which i didnt have last time so wow! (huge thanks to @pickypikachu for packaging up the mermaid eyes for me and helping me out a bunch with those) (and a second huge thanks to the testers who stuck w me with my mistakes and @honeyy-cake for helpin me solve the vampire mystery) anyways!

Some time before, early spring, Mel joined the Windenburg’s green thumb’s club.

She was nervous about meeting new people so she made some brownies for the members. One little kid though caught her attention: the smart, talkative Lukas Munch.

Why did Lukas came to like her so quickly? Is she the mother he wanted attention and dedication from, or is she the loving, caring older sister he never got to choose?
